Topic: Feminine Football Topic

MAN!!! all you "beautiful game" junkies obviously don't give the women much credit. I've been waiting all week as the final approached in the World Cup, but nada, zippo, bupkus. BTW the US women are up 1-0 over Japan. Should the US hang on to win they could become the villians as most of the world is pulling for Japan due to the recent disaster they endured. IMO, may the best team win.

WOW!!! This is wilder than any men's match I've watched. 2-2 , down to a penalty shootout, nerve wracking.

Re: Feminine Football Topic

Japan wins it. Congrats to both teams and this is the best ending considering the pain the Japanese have endured this year.

This has been an exciting WC tournament. The men could take a page from it. Congrats to Japan.

Re: Feminine Football Topic

I watched the game tonight and was pleasantly surprised to find this topic here when I looked in. Congratulations to the winners!

First of all, this was the highest quality women's game I have ever seen! The entertainment value was far higher, for example,  than the vast majority of West Ham games last season.  sad

There was some excellent play from both sides, both USA goals were top quality, while the Japanese goals were down to awful USA defending. Equally awful, was missing the first three penalties - you don't deserve to win if you take three such poor penalties, so I guess the bottom line is that the Japanese ladies wanted it more at the end, and USA paid the classic price for not taking more of the many chances they had while they were dominant, as they were for much of the game.

I'm sure this win will mean a great deal in Japan in view of events there earlier this year, which makes this shock defeat slightly more bearable. That Morgan is some player!  cool

Too bad you missed the quarter finals against Brazil. That was one of the most exciting games I've ever seen at any level. You rarely see dives in the womens game but a blatant try at stalling by a flop feigning injury cost Brazil the game. US tied with seconds left in the 2 minutes given for the stall with the yellow at the end of the second extra period.
Japan played well but were saved by the wood several times. I think it is very good for the sport for a new team to rise to the top.

Just watched the highlights ... http://www.fifa.com/womensworldcup/high … index.html

Congrats to Japan! If it's any comfort, we in England know what it feels like to lose out on penalties, we have a long history!  sad

Re: Feminine Football Topic

I'm afraid it did/does nothing for me. I watched a couple of minutes in a bar of the USA-France game and it was enough.

Its not a chauvanistic thing or anything. They are very skillful and their game has come a long way I'm sure, but it does nothing for me.

As has been elewhere here on this thread I too was impressed with their on field behaviour towards officials and that is definately a 'takeaway' the men's game could benefit from.

Maybe it is a perception thing on my part, but I think the goalkeeping standards will have to improve to capture my attention. The odd bits I saw always featured a keeper flapping pathetically at something. Like Scottish goalkeepers in the early '70's  big_smile !

There was certainly a big fuss over it here in D, especially while the home team were still in with a shout, but I think thats mostly as the Germans currently would go wild about their team in the World Tiddlywinks Championship. There is a nationalistic fervour here for the Red, Black & Gold when they have a chance of winning something.

Still, pleased for the Japanese. If it puts a smile on the face of that nation at the moment after their tribulations this year it definately has value.

I can´t really see that this is different in any other country. Which doesn´t mean that I liked the hype. I have to say that in the end I developped a lot of sympathy for the Japanese team: you could see that a high spirit can compensate a lot.

With the current match fixing scandals raging in the men's pro leagues at the highest levels in Europe and the Far East, the women's game is a breath of fresh air. All credit to Japan for hanging in against a tough opponent. But for the wood, the score could have been 4-nil at the half.
