Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Agreed about the engine noise Mike. Half the fun is the visceral impact of the screaming engines. I too remember the turbo days with the huge fat tires and throttle oversteer with no ground effects. That was some fun racing. I imagine they will keep tweaking the cars rules until they achieve true vehicle parity like NASCAR where the cars are alike as peas in a pod. There has to be passing opportunities and driver skill at the front for it to remain exciting for the fans who pay for it all.

This one I had to miss. Our young driver friend got a seat in an Indy Lights ride after his other team was banned due to some stupidity by the owner. It was aired at the same time. Congratulations to Peter Dempsey, the young Irishman, for P2! I'll watch the replay highlites for the Silverstone results.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

It was a great race this weekend: At least Alonso won, he dit really well the whole weekend. Hamilton had a good start and was always there...Massa raced well too, and the battle for 4th place was epic. I enjoyed a lot this sunday.

I must be sooo hard to please, - shocking race, shocking advert for the sport! Team orders again and something is seriously wrong when the race can be determined by the ability to place a wheel nut on a wheel! And was the result not over by the first bend?

Come on guys this is the richest "sport" in the world, - the cost of Silverstone updates alone at the insistence of Bernie mean that racing fans deserve better than this, - Bernie HAS to go, it is time the sport had some new blood and racing between cars is put back on the agenda.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

oops sorry the result was not all over by the first bend doh,- I meant that the racing was, - as the result was secured by the ability of the pit crew, or not ion the case of Red Bull this weekend.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Yes Ian, you must be VERY hard to please. Yesterdays was an excellent race, with an excellent result.

Whilst track position at a critical moment might have been determined by a pit cock up, ultimately it didn't decide the race. Alonso, a surprise even to himself, had the outright pace to win. The track conditions, durability of his tyres in this car configuaration and circumstances provided him with the opportunity to show it.

He drove magnificently, and I believe he would have got Vettel in the end.

Team orders? Well they were given by Horner, wrongly in my opinion, but Mark says he ignored them and pressed on but Vettel drove well enough to fend him off. The DRS didn't really help as much as Silverstone and it was the KERS that was all important with traction out of the corners. As that doesn't seem to work quite as well on the RB's, all the time, it was always going to be difficult for Mark. Not to say he didn't pull off some brilliant 'round the outside' moves earlier in the race when the track was damp. Big balls stuff, so credit where it is due, even though at Silverstone, if you go off, there is mile after mile of run off!

Ian, you seem to view F1 purely by the result of the 1st and 2nd places. As well you know in bikes a helluva lot action goes on through the field and that was the case yesterday as well. There was some excellent racing. The pit blunder robbed us of what I think would have been a fascinating battle between Vettel and Alonso, which Alonso would have won IMHO. Even so there was some great racing throughout. Hamiltons early antics were quite breathtaking, even more so when they went on to slicks with thetrack still damp.

I agree it is 'one of the richest' if not 'the richest' sport in the world, but coming from an era where there was NO overtaking, to one where we have some is a major step forward. I think if you start to consider it in that vein you can judge it a little more fairly. Anyway, as we know, where soooo much money is involved in a sport, if anything that will always skew the sporting element somewhat.

What we see every 2 weeks on a Sunday is invariably the results, good or bad, of the 'arms race' that is taking place back at the various factories of the major teams. I wish it wasn't so, but thats the way it is. Makes for some great stories and intrigue though.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

another point of view, - made in no way to have a go but just to put across my view which is different Mike.

I am conscious that I appear to be constantly moaning at F1, but it is because I want it to be and think it should be so much better as a racing spectacle than it is. Combine that with the fact that it ingests so much money to be obscene at a time when financially things are very tough for a lot of people, - it is morally over stepping a boundary for me.

Alsoso overtook Vettel in the pits as a result of crew mistake, - that is not racing. To say that Alonso would have won can never be substantiated because the racing opportunity of that was taken away by the rules of the sport, - why would that make for good viewing? Why would stories of intrigue make for interesting debate over stories of close racing? The world is politicised enough, - it has to be removed from ALL sport.

Jenson Button was taken out of the race as a result of a crew mistake.

Webber pitted as a result of a broadcast made by Hamilton's team being made public when it should not have, - that is not racing.

There are way too many variables that have nothing to do with racing having an impact on a racing result. That is wrong.

I cannot subscribe to the full grid but only maximum of 6 drivers could ever hope to win the race, - Bernie has been extremely successful at filling the grid and bringing a lot of money into the sport but at the expense of racing. I have been around racing for many years, even working as a press photographer, racing is about winning, end of! Sure on the way up your career path it can be about PB's, but why should the paying public pay so much to see so little?

I guess all the time that views like mine are in the minority and the majority are happy with watching cars put in lap after lap of good lap times then nothing will change. Good close racing can be achieved if there is a will, - and the top teams are stopped from dictating the rules, - you only have to look at the Touring Car championships to see a series controlled by the rule makers and not the manufacturers IMHO.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

No worries Ian. You should have heard how much I moaned about F1 during Schumi's dominant era!

Dominant driver, dominant car, dominant team, and still the team principle (Todt) manufactured results. He (almost) completely screwed the life out of the business (I won't call it a sport).

It took me a while to appreciate that that in this time we were witnessing one of the great associations of the business/sport. Top driver, coupled with a top designer, top stragegists and a budget for endless testing and tyre development. That success didn't come overnight but when it did the planets were aligned for some time. I never liked though the manipulation by Todt at that time, and of course, now recent history shows us that Ferrari even had an FIA sanctioned veto agreement on any developments any other team might have.

That truly was obscene.

Arguably Red Bull are almost on that path now, but the dice are considerably more loaded against it. Newey hates the rulemakers and his continuance in the business/sport will be limited as he sees the rulesmakers removing his technical licence to be innovative. And there is the dichotomy. The 'sport' should be the pinnacle of automotive development, but it has to be reined in to keep it as a 'sport' and not a technical excercise or 'arms race'.

Pit stops are and always have been part of the race, but I hate to think of the time and money wasted on computing all the variables that are involved today. For me there are too many stops. which serve only to confuse and confound spectators and viewers alike. This turns the race into a series of sprints, which I don't entirely like, but of course, does keep it 'entertaining'?

I still remember those '80's bores with Prost just droning on almost a lap ahead of everyone.

I honestly don't know what the answer is. Ever since Chapman came out with the Lotus 78 the sport has hurtled down a path to aerodynamic oblivion. Then Lotus started using active suspension. Is it all their fault then? Of course not, but the rule makers never got to grips with it then and they never have since.

I don't blame the manufacturers. they come and go as they please much like in all fields of racing. What they do though is flood the business with development cash for a time which distorts the status quo.

The counterpoint to this is NASCAR I guess where rules and design is strictly managed. It is a drivers championship but most races here are often won in the pits and by strategy. Not so different then really, but a lot lot cheaper and massively successful!

Despite everything I remain encouraged. Budgets will come down and hopefully manufacturers will only remain in the sport as drivetrain suppliers ultimately. Perhaps like in the NFL, teams should be allowed an 'engine' pick instead of the draft pick and the manufacturers involved must all supply an equal number of teams. But that would have to be voted in unanimously and one team wouldn't agree. probably the Red one.

If there is a good model maybe the DTM provides it. Mercedes and Audi have consistently had a tremendously open battle for the last x years since Opel left. Until last weekend Audi were leading the championship with a driver in a 2 year old car! Now they have to accomodate BMW in 2012, which I am sure they will because they know it is in their best interests to do so.

Don't see Ferrari ever being allowed in there!

Bernie will go one day and then............what? Will it still be F1 or will Bernie by then have F'd every1?????????

T'was indeed a good race, threat of rain, crackin' (or rubbish!) pitstops and probably Lewis' best race for ages. What DID happen to Seb? 40-50 seconds down the field at some parts of the afternoon, let's hope for some of the naysayers out there this is the start of a comeback from RB's rivals, looks like Seb doesn't like being back in the thick of it,much like Schumi did/does! Loves leading but can't understand how other drivers have the audacity to be in front of him! big_smile  (lights blue touchpaper and retires!) big_smile  big_smile Having said that,Hungary this week could be another procession,Monaco-esque track with little overtaking and no real DRS opportunities.Qually will be all.... smile

This news just in....

The BBC and Sky Sports will broadcast Formula 1 in the UK between 2012 and 2018 under a new rights deal.
The BBC has been the exclusive broadcaster of F1 in the UK since 2009 but its contract with Formula One Management was due to expire after the 2013 season.
Sky Sports will show every race, qualifying session and practice live.
BBC Sport will broadcast half the races live, as well as the qualifying and practice sessions from those races.
Both companies will broadcast in high definition.
Races screened by the BBC will be live on the BBC Sport website for UK users.
The BBC will have highlights on TV, online and mobile for any race it it is not showing live, and all races will be broadcast on BBC Radio 5 live.
Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport, said: "We are absolutely delighted that F1 will remain on the BBC.
"The sport has never been more popular with TV audiences at a 10-year high and the BBC has always stated its commitment to the big national sporting moments.
"With this new deal not only have we delivered significant savings but we have also ensured that through our live and extended highlights coverage all the action continues to be available to licence-fee payers."
Races shown live on BBC TV will include the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Monaco GP and the concluding race of the season.

Oh, god, no!
"... and these four black things at each corner of the car are called 'wheels'. The faster they go around, the faster the car goes..."

I wonder when the BBC will start showing only the first half of international footy matches roll
I don't have Sky, and just nearly fell off my chair when I looked at the prices for Sky Sports  yikes

yikes   mad  Not fantastic news to THIS F1 fan.  I've said before, the BBC coverage of GPs since they took over from the commercial channel has been superb and it's a crying shame.

On a happier note, what a great race the German GP was.  Congrats to Lewis on a fine and well deserved win.

Unlikely that many will take up sky sports for half the races. Me certainly not. I'd sooner watch the motogp on Eurosport or BBC. Pretty soon they'll be back on 1000cc bikes and things should get interesting again.
