Topic: Did your last shows start in time?

Yesterday Eva, Thomas and I went to a Todd Wolfe show in a very small Nürnberg venue. We were told that it would start at 8, it actually started at 9. We were very angry and it took some time to get reconciled with the band.

It looks for us that starting not in time seems to be rather an old fashioned relict from a time when the importance of a band was measured in being too late on stage. I never saw Joe starting late, once (in Winterbach) he was even 5 or ten minutes too early.

Re: Did your last shows start in time?

Nothing recently that excessive...a few shows that may have been 10 minutes or so late.
It's noticeable when compared to Joe, who is very prompt. I have taken to telling people standing in line for drinks 5 minutes before the show that Joe will start PROMPTLY at 8PM (or whatever time) and if not in their seats, they'll miss the opening number. Usually falls on deaf ears, but at least they are warned. This may be a result of most bands coming on later than the start time?

Re: Did your last shows start in time?

Joe is prompt.  I won't mention something somewhere, and the few know what I mean.  Joe was on time.
Joe starts promptly and he floors it.  Best be in your seat buckled or standing in place firmly or else....
Keep doing that Bill, you are right, they were warned.  It no longer bothers or concerns me that I get that "Yeah, right, neanderthal, I know better, all shows start late" look...to see them scurrying down the aisles when a song or 2 are over makes me snicker a bit, but hey, drinks and chatty posing are important too, maybe TOO important sometimes!  lol

Some of us had a perception Joe was starting at 8 in Las Vegas (I was passing it around too, mistakenly, sorry, misinformed was all, not trying to keep the bartenders happy, but I am sure they got a bit of business and hey, the show was right there, so no one missed a thing) when in fact it was 9yikes  roll Oops.

Re: Did your last shows start in time?

All shows I've been to this year started in time:

Henrik Freischlader, Timo Gross, Joanne Shawn Taylor in   Der Schwarzer Adler in Rheinberg, where  it ALWAYS starts on time!!
Joe in Antwerp too, he began at exactly 20.15 and a lot of people were still drinking in the lounge and came in too late. Joe is always on time too and that's the way it must be. A lot of people have to get home by train or bus.

Be glad you aren't married to my wife. She sets her clocks ahead 20 minutes for an edge and still is a half hour late. Always! It used to drive me crazy, now I'm resigned to it.  hmm

Saw Todd Wolfe a few weeks ago and the show started just as it was announced.
Sometimes the venues give no information whether the time they announce is the time they open the doors or the time the gig starts. And that are always the same venues. My opinion is that they want to sell a few beers more.
Never waited so long to get angry.
Last gig that started about 30-45 minutes late was at the Moulin Blues Festival in Ospel and it was Ian Siegal who missed a flight and a connection flight. During the waiting time you could feel that the atmosphere in the tent got more and more electric.

Re: Did your last shows start in time?

Absolutely, and any of Joe's support bands who run over, better watch out. There are one or two well known bands out there that have felt the nudge of Joe's impecable timekeeping! No names. they know who they were.

Even the Allman Brothers Band starts on time. Nuff said!  big_smile

Re: Did your last shows start in time?

If it is a small venue dontt be too hard on the band, it is usually down to the venue getting the bar revenue up as his is usually where their profit is. It can very frustrating as a band. If it is a big delay then being kept informed is important.
What I find more annoying are opening acts who play extra and eat into the main acts set, often terecare curfews and that extra tie cameos off the main acts set. I learnt this lesson once and it will never happen again. The sound desk would be muted by anyone taking the piss.

Re: Did your last shows start in time?

Saw Rush in Dublin last thursday. They started 5 minutes after the stated showtime of 8pm. Perfectly acceptable of course but they didn't finish until 11.25pm. 3 hours 20 minutes. That's a show.

When God made Joe Bonamassa he was only showing off

I know enough about Joe to know that he is strict about being on time, and doesn't like it when somebody's not.  smile

Re: Did your last shows start in time?

I have been known to pull a plug on an opening act in my younger days.  LITERALLY.  I hate that slovenly attitude that entitles being late as well.

Once at a jam/dance, the group preceding me had a female who carried her purse on stage and answered her cell in the middle of the KB solo and then left the damn thing on stage when her set was through.

When it rang during my set, I saw her heading onstage to get it.  I launched that purse out onto the dance floor...almost started a riot.  Her BF was remarkable.  He put his head down and said nothing.

It's a pointless mind game/power trip.  Your job is to entertain the people who paid to get in.  You go to work on time.
