Topic: Pets

I suppose that most of us have one or more pets. I also imagine that most of us love our pets, which is why we have them for company in the first place. But there are also times, like right now for me, when I'd like to wring their necks and/or give them a kick...

I got up this Sunday morning after an excellent night's sleep to find that my two cat sisters had once again dragged a bird into the house. This was by no means the first time, I have to remove feathers and a dead bird maybe three or four times every year. But today was different. They'd obviously chased the poor thing around the house, playing and torturing as is a domestic cat's nature.

I'm used to feathers all over, but today there were really feathers ALL over the house. During my search for the bird's corpse I kept discovering more things that had been knocked over, papers, plants, bird excretions on my mouse and keyboard, gobs of blood on the carpet, semi-destroyed venetian blinds....they were at war in here last night and I slept through it all. Eventually, I found the bird - not dead, but seriously wounded and clearly traumatized, leaving me the distasteful task of trying to grab it so that I could wring its neck and put it out of its misery. sad

I just thought I'd calm myself by writing this before starting on the cleaning up task that's likely to take several hours. Pets, don't you just love 'em?

RIP Iron Man

Re: Pets

Wow George, thats going to be no fun....sounds like a curfew is due to them cats....my cat is only about a year old, chases bees and flys, the best part is I dont have to walk him like the dog...we've had to keep the animals inside because of all the dirty air from the fires in Cali, there going nuts and looking at me like I'm the bad guy....I swear Tyson (the dog) is hurt from not having his nightly run at the park, he gives me that look of "geez dad, what did I do wrong?"....anyhow, turn on "Sloe Gin", that will mellow you out when your cleaning...hope your body is getting back to normal from the time change

Later gater....Dave

Re: Pets

A few years ago my neighbor was fostering a lab/beagle mix that had just had 6 puppys in the local shelter.  We would go over daily to see the puppys and to play with momma dog, Patience. Well once the pups are old enough to be adopted they go back to the shelter with mom. The pups all went quick but poor old momma dog wasn't so lucky. We always wondered what ever happened to poor old Patience. She finally was adopted by an older lady who didn't keep up on the heartguard meds to prevent heartworm. Patience ended up with heartworm.  Then to top it off the lady passed away and the family took Patience back to the shelter.
Well last December my neighbor was taking her kitty over to get shots and normal checkup. She happened to glance in at the dogs and there was Patience. Surrounded by mainly pit buls. She came home and told us" You'll never believe who I saw at the shelter, Patience"  Well Diane took the next day off work and went over and adopted her. The shelter vets all thought this dog is so laid back and could amke someone a very good pet  that they gave her the heartworm treatment. Sure she might be 10 now but thanks to the wonderfull people at our shelter and the vets who did the heartworm treatment Patience is fine.  We couldn't be happier. She leads a very laid back and spoiled life.  She has her best bud , Miss Kitty to hang with daily.  Here's some pics if you want to meet Patience.

Take care everyone. And if I don't meet you no more in this world
Then ill, I'll meet you in the next one and don't be late, don't be late

Re: Pets

Wow George what a mess !  We adopted 2 stray cats we found in the yard - they are
mainly house cats now much to their disappointment - but they have snuck out a couple
times and brought me "presents" but never anything like that!  That poor bird !

Re: Pets

Hi George,
I have two cats myself.Check my avatar.
Mine are strictly indoor cats. They cost me to much to let them wander around outdoors.
They don't mind since they have to whole house to run around in.
So no birds or other animals they can catch and torture.
They have a lot of toys to play with. And thankfully they have never destroyed anything in the house. They are the easiest cats to have. You can go away for the weekend leave them enough to eat and drink and they don't mind. They have each other to play and thats all that matters to them. They like to cudle with me and sleep next to you on the sofa or bed.Like i said so easy ..
Don't have kids.Right now my cats are my kids wink

Re: Pets

Hi George. You must be a very heavy sleeper, that fight must have made quite a racket!
Talking of poor birds I have been looking after my neighbour's two aviaries while he is away. One of them has a mixture of canaries and budgies with some hens and pheasants. One of the canaries has a nest with a baby bird in it. Well it did...I went in on Friday and found the baby was on the floor and was being pecked in the head by one of the other birds. It was still alive so I replaced it in the nest not sure if it would survive or not. Went back about three hours later and mum was sitting on it .. all looked to be well.
When I went in yesterday the first thing I did was to check the nest and to my dismay it was empty. I looked everywhere but there was no sign of the poor thing. I reckon the other birds had eaten it. I guess it really is survival of the fittest in the animal kingdom...still I was quite sad.
Your cats were only doing what comes naturally but I hope for your sake that next time they take the fight outside. Do they make muzzles for cats?

Tripsy smile

Re: Pets

Hi George,
I hope all is well in pet land now.  I have a dachshund that thinks he's a cat.  He brought a baby mockingbird in the house and killed it behind the sofa a couple of weeks ago.  Well, Ken and I are both bird lovers so it was not a plesant time for us, to say the least. I own a bird. A parrot, who pretty much runs the place. I know... I know... Why would you own a bird and keep him in a cage?  Well, our bird is only in his cage when we're gone or when he wants to be.  But, it's funny how things work out.  Since my dog, Drake, killed that bird, we discovered and rescued two injured baby birds.  There's a woman who lives in Altamonte Springs that takes in injured birds.  We have taken probably a dozen injured birds to her.  And, just tonight, we took a baby cardinal to her that was just hanging out on the ground.  Turns out, he was injured and she's keeping him for a few days until he recovers.

We now check the yard for baby birds before we let the dogs run freely.  Last week, we had a baby cardinal that was nesting in a low branch in our back yard.  We kept the dogs leashed when we took them out for a few days until little Elmer finally flew the coop.  We do what we can, but I know my dogs are hunters and I still love them to pieces.   hmm

Re: Pets

I miss my Pepper kitty who was killed almost 4 weeks ago now.  Haven't been on the board much in this time nursing my broken heart.  One of the joys in my life was taken from me but time is starting to allow me to start feeling and recognizing the other joys I still have in my life.

I have composed a poem in memory of my kitty as part of my therapy.

"SWEET MISSY PEPPER"

Adopted, a fuzzy little kitten, named Peppermint Patty,
Oh, the joy we all had as you became part of the family.
Almost 16 years gone since the little girl brought you home,
The years passed by and you both have grown.
We gave you food and love, that was our duty,
But you gave us so much more, happiness and comfort, even when
you were snooty.
You were a furry giant in the dollhouse door,
Til one day you did not fit, banned evermore.
The girls they teased you with tape down your back,
The man claimed to hate you, as with all cats.
But it was clear and evident right from the start,
That your kitty ways would become ingrained in our hearts.
You dipped your orange paw in the water bowl to check the level before you would drink,
You waited for me to finish showering to catch drips from the bathroom sink.
You peered over my shoulder while I put on my makeup,
Your incessant preening and licking we could not interrupt.
You rolled to and fro on the floor looking so cute,
A nose meet followed by a forehead nuzzle, a friendship I cannot refute.
You waited patiently as I finished my evening meal,
And my last bite was your signal to meow with a zeal.
I look for you little eyes to peer over the sofa arm,
Waiting for my tap to signal the alarm,
Its okay to to jump into my lap and make yourself comfortable,
But sometimes you would not wait, my little lap warmer.
You jumped on the bed to bid me a good night,
Before you settled in the corner chair with your cushy bed just right.
Sometimes in the night you sneak back up and snuggle and purr by my side,
I knew and let you be, but the man, he could not abide.
You hated the noisy hairdryer, the rustling of plastic bags, the mans guitar, but we teased you any way,
A scowl you would give us as you scurried away.
You bobbing inquisitive face in the french door window pane out back,
Beconing us to let you in for your afternoon snack.
You did not deserve your final end and fate was cruel to you that horrible day,
Terror on eight legs invaded you world and took you away.
I am so truly sorry no one was there to save you, protect you and keep you from harm,
I wish so very much to hold you and comfort you in my arms.
I miss you so much and a day does not go by that I do not think of you and cry,
A pat on your head, a tug on your ear, your happy gurgly sound, your funny face nearby,
The house seems less of a home and so very empty,
With out the presence of our Pepper kitty,
You are not there to lap up the tuna water in your black bowl,
To soak up the sun beaming on the dining room floor.
Wait for us Sweet Pepper as you frolic in eternal grassy fields chasing feathers in the wind,
Be comforted in the knowledge your family will join you in their final end,
Time is of no value there so it will be a swish of you tail with the orange tip,
But an eternity for us as we mourn, but we will never forget.

Re: Pets

One of my best friends in this whole world is my dog Goldie. She understands the English language better than either of my children. Well, at least she listens better than they do. wink  She has never killed or injured another creature in her life. Oh, she does like to chase geese and ducks into a pond, but I've seen a frog hop right across in front of her face and other than giving it a glance, she was not going to harm it. When I'd come home from work, she met me at the door just happy to see me again. Now that I'm retired, we have more time to spend together for walks, trips to the park, and walks down to the bank's drive up where, after we do our business, the girl in the bank sends out 2 dog treats in the tube for my special friend. She sleeps in our bed every night and when she gets a little chilled, she crawls under the covers. Many times she puts her face and long nose on my face and moans as if to say, "Thanks for another great day Dad!" Yes, she's so very sweet...

P.S. Wonderful words for "SWEET MISSY PEPPER", Margie. I have had pets who passed away in my life too. It's very hard to handle and there will always be one little vacant spot in your heart...prayers for you in this difficult time.

Re: Pets

Nice tribute Margie. We had a scare yesterday as our aged and tiny Yorkie Pip, who usually goes to work with his "mom" was having a bout of intestinal distress from some cat offal he found roll and was left home. He decided being left home alone was not cool and took off, escaping via the kitty door in the gate. Something he's never done before. Luckily a passing bicyclist spotted him and asked a neighbor, who returned him last night.

Re: Pets

Count us among the cat fans... we have four delightful boys -- Rocky, Mickey, Loki and Jett -- who never fail to keep us entertained and unconditionally loved. All are rescues, and all are indoor cats; indoor cats live, on average, twice as long as their outdoor cousins.

I'm also involved in a local animal rescue organization (CPAA) that's working to make Central Pennsylvania a place where no animal is euthanized solely because it is not wanted. It does this through support of numerous individual local rescue organizations as well as an aggressive spay/neuter program. They also work to mitigate and/or reverse the effects of animal cruelty by providing safe havens for abused animals and try to rehabilitate them for eventual adoption.

And please don't think our affinity for cats is at the expense of dogs... all pets are precious and have so much love to give. They bring out the best in all of us. When I think of what could have happened to our four boys, who are so affectionate and happy, my only regret is that we can't adopt them all!

Re: Pets

That was hard to read, but a very touching tribute for "Sweet Missy Pepper". RIP Peppermint Patty sad
We have two little dogs, and I get so pissed when I see big dogs running around neighborhoods unleashed... mad

Re: Pets

It's Me - so sorry about your sweet kitty.  Amazing how these guys creep into our hearts.  Time heals.

I haven't had a pet for years (grew up with dogs, cats, birds, fish) but recently adopted a 6 year old Maine Coon cat.  I am enjoying him so much (even though he seems to like to sleep a lot and EAT a lot)  that in the few months that I have had him I can't imagine losing him.  Can't imagine 16 years of loving gone.    Big hugs to you.

Re: Pets

Thanks all for your support.

This is been particularly difficult for me.  I would be sad if she had gone naturally from age or if she were sick and suffering and had to have her put to sleep, but dogs breaking into our yard and mauling her to death has been a bitter thing to accept.  I will have to, but it will be an unsettled acceptance. The shock has passed and sadness takes over each evening as I move around the house and miss her presence.

Greif is an emotionally charged personal journey one must occasionally endure to reinvent a different way of living due to a void created by death.

I'm SO sorry to hear of your loss... I confess I didn't put 4+4 together to realize exactly what took your poor kitty.

Our pets are so amazing how they almost literally "get under our skin." It's almost as if they become a part of us, of who we are. When they are gone, it almost feels like we have lost an arm or a leg. But for cats especially, the relationship they have with their humans is so much more intimate because they do not (usually) share their affection with strangers. No one else can understand that relationship.

We have lost two cats and one dog, two from long illnesses, and one from a shockingly short one, totally unexpected. When the last passed, for about three weeks the house felt cold and empty; finally Jocelyn could stand it no longer, and we soon had a new pair. They were so sweet and gentle that we adopted two more. But that's our limit. The four we have we guard like gold, and they seem to understand and reciprocate in kind. They cannot replace the ones we lost, and they never will, but all the same they have become integral, treasured members of our household, and have become as irreplaceable as the ones who came before.

Mourn your friend for whatever period is appropriate for you. As you said, grief is personal. Don't rush yourself. But when you're ready, rest assured there's another friend somewhere nearby, waiting, in a shelter or rescue, for their forever home... with you.

Re: Pets

What a beautiful tribute, It's me! I totally feel for you as I'm also a  long time cat lover. I have two seven year old half-Siamese sisters, Nando and Bonnie (yes, named after The Goddess) who both keep me company and form a connection to my late wife. They are, of course, part of my close family.

Re: Pets

Yes lord they are part of the family.  I still get my back up when i think of how the Vet killed my Rottie.  However MsTia and I have agreed now when the last one is gone, we're through.

I've had every kind of loss you could think of, so I feel ya.  Heartbreaking to hear.

I'm ready for everyone to be gone now.  I wants to ride out without facing a $600 kennel bill.
