Topic: First attempt at recording & mixing

I've just got myself a copy of Logic Studio 9 and over the past couple of days been recording a song called "Waiting For The Rain" which I just made up one night whilst I was waiting for a tropical rainstorm to hit.

I'd appreciate any feedback that more experienced musicians or recording engineer can give me to improve it.  I still feel there is something missing in it somewhere...

I am no recording engineer, but I enjoyed your song.  You play with a nice sense of melody.

Re: First attempt at recording & mixing

Sounds nice.

Can you give us a rundown on equipment?

Guitar/amp, etc?  Full analog, full digital signal path?  Did you run it through USB ports or a special sound card?

I'm particularly interested in microphones in that I'm going microphone shopping this weekend.

Thanks,

conorb

Re: First attempt at recording & mixing

Thanks for the kind feedback so far guys.  Happy to give a rig rundown:

Guitar - Fender USA Stratocaster with Lollar "Dirty Blonde" pickup set - whole song on the neck pickup only.

Recorded through Amplitube 3.5 on my Mac (via Behringer UC6102 Guitar-PC USB interface).  Amplitube model used was the "Custom Modern Hi-Gain" (100W 6L6 Tube Lead channel) via 4x12 Closed Modern cabinet sim.

Sorry conorb, no mics in this case, but I do have a nice SM57 that I use to mic up my Boogie MkIIB from time to time.  Just not on this particular take.

I basically used Amplitube as an AU add in on one channel of Logic Studio to bring the guitar feed in.

Oh yeah, the acoustic guitar on the rhythm backing was my Maton ECW80C also via Amplitube using the "British Modern Vintage" amp sim.

Drums were EzDrummer as an AU plug in, using the basic 4/4 Ballad presets from their "Songwriters Pack".  Some slight modification to the MIDI patterns, but not much.

Other tracks (Violins and Cellos) were SampleTank 2.5 sound samples, also as an AU plug in, driven using my MIDI keyboard.

That's about it - everything else was pretty much stock standard Logic Studio processing.  Didn't use any of their built in effects etc. though.

Oh, I did use one third party plug in called MAGNETIC in the final mix down in order to give the whole track, and especially the guitar parts a nice warm 'tape' sound and remove a lot of the digital 'coldness'.

I am happy to answer any other questions - just let me know what information you need.

Re: First attempt at recording & mixing

Oh, I enjoyed it soooo much - thanks! Amazing melody!

Re: First attempt at recording & mixing

Very nice, I wish more music was shared on this board instead of so many just talking gear.  Had a nice Mark Knopfler feel.  I would say that at 1:25 I was ready for a heavier groove to settle in, but all in all very nice!!!

Keep posting, maybe others will back up their "pro gear talk" with great playnig- very nice!!

Cheers!!

Re: First attempt at recording & mixing

Really nice mate, loved the melody, very relaxing and thoughtful tune.

As a side note where did you get the Sloe Gin and Stop! Backings that are on your SC? I'd love to grab these backings and do my own renditions on these two classic Joe songs.  smile

Re: First attempt at recording & mixing

Hey again everyone - thank you so much for the kind words.  Very humbling!

Hey sted - I created those backing tracks myself from scratch after not being able to find any online.  You are more than welcome to download them as MP3s from my SoundCloud site.  Just click the black arrow that is pointing downwards to download them.  Although I think I am hitting the download limits on my free SC account, so if you have any problems let me know via PM on this board and I can email them to you.

Nice song!

Re: First attempt at recording & mixing

Thanks dchale - I got your PM, but the forum mailer program hid your email address, so I could not respond to you.

Anyhow - to anyone interested, I just realised that those backing tracks of mine are up at GuitarBackingTrack.com along with a bunch of other great ones created by others:

Enjoy!

Thanks, I just downloaded them!  I'll have to see if there's a setting that can be changed so it doesn't hide the email address.

Thanks for the follow-up.

My plan is to get a microphone (or two) and do some recording of my new Bonamassa LP.  Just to try it.  I've done audio recording for dialog before but I don't have any "newer" technology as I did all of that to DAT and then transferred everything to my computer.

I'm thinking about sticking with that path, but we'll see what I can find - I'm sure from a technical point-of-view a lot of things have changed in an interesting and expensive way.  smile
