Topic: You are what you eat!

What the heck am I talking about?.......did not eat well at all the last year, and my bad habbits continued until I was hospitalized on this past Feb 28th.....blood sugar and cholesteral SKY HIGH!....thought I was having serious heart and organ failure, scared the you know what out of me....well I'm still kicking, but on a ridiculous 2000 calorie a day diet, and having to force my 240 LB lumbering body on a Nordic Trac...down to 225 in 3 weeks and got my blood sugar down to 90...

When I was went to the RAH 2 years ago this coming May, I was 190lb with a body broken down on pain killers.....you can imagine what I feel like now with nothing more than some tylenol to ease the aches  roll

Why do I even post something so personal.....take care of your self everyday, too many people need you around more than we realize..... you see the fear in their eyes and feel you have let them down...at 53 I feel awful, time drags on

Enough of me,  please take care of yourself

Now back to some fun stuff....carry on my forum friends

Re: You are what you eat!

Hey Bubba, you take care of yourself, that's an order!! So you're not that svelte, Adonis looking stud-man from 2 years ago? I can hardly believe it!! Trust me everyone, I was jealous of Dave when I saw how good of shape he was in and how bad I looked. Like Dave said, "You are what you eat!" I was always one who never paid attention to what went in my mouth because, I had great numbers on my yearly physical. Well, my cholesterol crept up and up and now I'm on a low dose cholesterol medication to lower it. Today I'm much more concerned with what I eat and I try to get in some sort of physical exercise everyday. This old body of mine is the only one I have, so it's about time I really start taking care of it! smile

Good post buddy, we all need to eat healthy!

Have you heard of, Jamie Oliver ? He has taken his Food Revolution to the USA, here's a link ... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/ar … dvice.html

jamie oliver to take school dinners / ministry of food to the usa

Tue 26 May 2009 @ 14:55 | story by peter berry

British chef will tackle America’s obesity crisis in new prime-time ABC series

Jamie Oliver is set to work with leading US TV network ABC to film an American production combining his two hit British series, “Jamie’s School Dinners” and “Jamie’s Ministry of Food”. In the original Ministry series, broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK, Oliver filmed for over two years in the London borough of Greenwich (for School Dinners) and the Yorkshire town of Rotherham (for Ministry) and inspired people there to change their unhealthy diets of takeaways and ready meals in favour of cooking fresh, nutritious food whilst saving money. Jamie is currently looking for an appropriate American town in which to start a food revolution.

The new series will be a co-production between Oliver’s TV company, Fresh One and Ryan Seacrest Productions. Filming begins later in 2009 for a prime-time slot on ABC early in 2010.

The Ministry of Food centre in Rotherham, which provides cooking lessons and advice for everyone in the town, is about to celebrate its one year anniversary and is booked up until July with local people wanting to feed themselves and their families ‘proper’ food. The centre has been so successful that many other British councils are looking to copy the Rotherham model.

Oliver says: “I believe that now is the time when America is ready for big change and I’ve been working on ideas for the American series for five years now, inspired by what has been achieved by the wonderful people in Greenwich and Rotherham. This is without question the most important and challenging thing I’ll ever do in my life but I truly believe that I can at least plant the seeds of change in America in terms of helping a community to cook better, feed their kids better and save money. I’ll be using everything I’ve learned over the last 10 years to try to get meaningful, sustainable change.”

Oliver’s plan for the series is to not only change the way that the people in the chosen town think about food and cooking but also to inspire a massive change in US schools, as he has done in the UK. In 2005, Oliver’s series “Jamie’s School Dinners” led to a public outcry about the state of school food in Britain and resulted in over £500m of British government investment in new, nutritious school meals. Recent research suggested that the new meals had been instrumental in improving both attendance and exam results.

Re: You are what you eat!

Shred,
Thanks for sharing and reminding us all how important it is to take care of ourselves. It's not just what you eat, but your exercise habits too. I try to hit the gym at least twice a week but it's a constant battle to maintain that. I leave for work at 6am and don't get home until 6:30 or 7pm. By that time of day I just want to eat and sit down for the evening. I have to force myself out the door, but always feel better after my workout.
Glad to see you reined it back in, dropped much of the weight you gained, and started eating better. That's a good example for all of us.

Take care Shreddit. Many have predispositions genetically to elevated levels of nasty stuff in our veins, at least that is what my physician says. Those that do have to work harder. Same old solutions. More veggies, less junk food, exercise on a regular basis, even if it is only taking a brisk half hour daily walk instead of sitting. The hard thing is breaking out of our daily routine and taking the time to take care of ourselves instead of worrying about other things.

Re: You are what you eat!

Wow! You are doing fantastic, what a great job I’M so happy for you. Please keep us updated on your progress. I’M sure that you will have continued success.

I tipped the scales at 238 myself yesterday, so I am also changing my lifestyle.

My exercise plan has started at work today. I will be walking a minimum of 3 miles every day on my breaks and lunch. Burning calories is the most important thing, so walking slowly around the building won’t do any good, so I keep my heart rate above 115 bpm; fast enough to labor my breathing. I will start to take the stairs up to the next floor after a lap or two to increase my heart rate and burn more calories in a few weeks.

I always do my laps before I eat lunch and snacks. This is not a strenuous workout so it is safe for my body to eat after my walks.

I will join a gym tomorrow gym to attend the Spin classes. I won’t try to keep and up with the instructor, I will keep my heart rate above 120 and below 140 bpm during the class, I’M burning calories to reduce fat, not building muscle or training for the Tour de France. The same rule will apply for the treadmill, jogging and cycling for thirty minutes a day or a minimum of three times a week. This is in addition to the walking at work. I will be putting in some serious mile on my road bike pedaling around town.

Meals I plan just eat healthy and keep each meal no larger than both fists and have a light snack between meals.

My typical breakfast is oatmeal with brown sugar raisins and honey or a bowl of Product 19 or an English muffin with honey and a banana or other fruit.

Lunch is a normal sandwich (not a hoagie or club) with baked potato chips or a basic small salad.

Dinner is steak, chicken, fish or pasta with veggie and fruit or a small salad. Keep the portions small and I try to work out before dinner.

Drink water and my one Pepsi a day. Staying away from energy and power drinks unless I’M having a full cardio workout, run or bike ride, and no alcohol (that’s the hard part) No beer….

This plan work for me once before, It’s time to get off my butt and do it again.

Keep up the good work.

Take care,
Bill

Re: You are what you eat!

Great points Bill! One thing I started doing a few years back is taking the stairs instead of an elevator and parking at the far end of the mall lot and walking the extra distance when shopping. Look for a way to burn off energy at each opportunity. It was amazing how effective it was. I dropped 15 pounds before I knew it.  I've said this before, but as we age and our joints become susceptible to damage, a less stressful exercise is better in order to lessen the risk of injury. I and the wife took up Pilates training about a year and a half ago. Low impact but very effective for us. We have a supervised training program tailored to our age (old) and are taught the proper way to warm up and correctly do the exercises to avoid injury. I highly recommend it. It can be aerobic, but those with aging bodies need to build core strength, flexibility and balance more than anything. I even was able to rehab a life long shoulder injury and regain range of motion and strength that I had missed for over 30 years. You're never too old to start anew!

Re: You are what you eat!

Isn't it crazy how in our youth we have a pleasurable realationship with food and eat what we want with no regard to how it may affect our health.  Then age sets in and weight creeps up and ....oops...time to change the habits.
I read a book titled the very name of this thread.  You Are What You Eat by Dr. Gilliam McKeith.  A very easy read and informative to help one change habits and understand how what we eat affects certain things going on in the body. I would reccommend it as a read to anyone if you can find it.

As a physical education teacher and husband to a health and wellness professor/ IFBB fitness pro, it is great to hear you all on your health kicks!  The trick is to keep at it!!!!!   I try to eat "clean" through the week....oatmeal, for breakfast,,,pasta, or lean meat with lots of veggies for lunch,,,,,,,and the same for dinner.......with two snacks mixed in throughout the day...fruit, nuts, things like that..........then on the weekend i will have a "cheat" meal or two...............Also add in some weight training if you can........it will help to burn off additional fat and you will feel better.........

You dont have to try and kill yourself working out right off the bat,,,,,,,ease into it and then increase the intensity as you get into better shape!

Good luck everyone!!!!!!!!!
