Ahhhhh, so you were one of the folks standing in front of me blocking my view at the beginning of the show (Just kidding...  and welcome to the board)

And oh... Great shots.  I, too, really love the black & white.

I shoot with a Nikon D3s and the lens on the camera for that shot was a 70-200 2.8 VRII.

I got that shot at the very end of a song. I was shooting a bunch of shots rapid fire. All the lights were on and right at the end they turned off all the lights and left just the follow spot on Joe. I shot almost 2000 pictures to capture those magical unexpected moments.

Thanks for the info.  Don't think I'll make it to the D3 any time soon, but have thought about upgrading from a D40 to a D90.  2000, wow!  First show I took pictures, I captured 800 and I thought that was a lot   More recently maybe 400 on avg.  Again, great picts, thanks for sharing.

I shoot with fast Nikkor 2.8 glass all the time, especially where the lighting changes quite quickly. I have used a Nikon D300 in the past to shoot concerts but now I have a D3s. The D3s is considered the heavy weight champ of low light and high ISO. At ISO 6400 the D3s shots are very clean with almost zero noise. Many of today’s cameras have a lot of noise at ISO’s over 1600 and that’s where your photos will start to fall apart. I had to keep a close watch on my D300 as the ISO above 1600 got real noisy. This was the main reason I upgraded to the D3s. You reduce all limitations.

I shoot wide open at 2.8 and use Auto ISO set to max out at ISO 6400 and no slower then 1/125. I like to use spot metering and tight spot focus. Sometimes I push over a stop or so depending on backlight, but I do this on the fly and don't leave it there. Just in certain situations. I try to almost always get it right in the camera to avoid any post processing. I guess you could call me old school.

For me it’s always about the shot and framing. I don't want to have to think about the technical aspects of the gear when I am in a shooting mindset. It helps to know where Joe will be so you can try to line up some shots in advance. It helps to know what side of the stage to be on or what gear on stage will used in a song.

File Format: Nikon Raw NEF 14-bit and High Quality JPG at the same time.
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.3 to manage the photos.
Nik Software I use all of their plug-ins.
Adobe Photoshop CS5.

One B/W was first sharpened up first with Nik Software Define 2.0 and then a simple B/W conversion with Color Efex Pro 2.0.
The other B/W was processed with Silver Efx Pro 2.0.

Yeah, thanks Viscott, good info. I'm still learning how to use my humble D70s, which I hope to bring to the Reading show (sitting right next to can1208 ). Should be fun to play around with it, see what sort of amateur shots I can get.
