Ahhhhh, so you were one of the folks standing in front of me blocking my view at the beginning of the show (Just kidding... and welcome to the board)
And oh... Great shots. I, too, really love the black & white.

Very nice!!! What camera did you use? Looks like the background/lighting my be a bit more conducive to getting some great shots. Looking to taking some pix in Pittsburgh.

I shoot with a Nikon D3s and the lens on the camera for that shot was a 70-200 2.8 VRII.
I got that shot at the very end of a song. I was shooting a bunch of shots rapid fire. All the lights were on and right at the end they turned off all the lights and left just the follow spot on Joe. I shot almost 2000 pictures to capture those magical unexpected moments.

2000!!?? Think of the 35mm days,eh? How many rolls of film for that many,eh? Must bring myself into the digital age properly, got compact but these shots are superb, well done that man!

Thanks for the info. Don't think I'll make it to the D3 any time soon, but have thought about upgrading from a D40 to a D90. 2000, wow! First show I took pictures, I captured 800 and I thought that was a lot More recently maybe 400 on avg. Again, great picts, thanks for sharing.
Jim
It's pretty easy to take that many pictures during a two hour concert. I don't think I've done that many, but close. Pretty easy to do when clicking rapid fire. Once in a while I miss film - but I don't miss that agonizing wait to see if the settings worked! I have a d300 - they are amazing cameras.
Nice pictures, by the way.

....great pic's!.. and the pick guard is back on the Bonaburst... or is it the other 'burst?
Great shots! I love them all.

My previous camera was a D300, great camera! But my new D3s well that's another story
Another shot B/W. Testing out some new software for Black and White processing.

Hi...what aperture and lens settings are you using on your D3s with the 70-200 lens for these shots? I assume no flash, correct? These are brilliant...also what software do you use to convert to B&W? Thanks!

I added the technical information to each of the photos on the picture site.
No Flash.
I shoot with fast Nikkor 2.8 glass all the time, especially where the lighting changes quite quickly. I have used a Nikon D300 in the past to shoot concerts but now I have a D3s. The D3s is considered the heavy weight champ of low light and high ISO. At ISO 6400 the D3s shots are very clean with almost zero noise. Many of today’s cameras have a lot of noise at ISO’s over 1600 and that’s where your photos will start to fall apart. I had to keep a close watch on my D300 as the ISO above 1600 got real noisy. This was the main reason I upgraded to the D3s. You reduce all limitations.
I shoot wide open at 2.8 and use Auto ISO set to max out at ISO 6400 and no slower then 1/125. I like to use spot metering and tight spot focus. Sometimes I push over a stop or so depending on backlight, but I do this on the fly and don't leave it there. Just in certain situations. I try to almost always get it right in the camera to avoid any post processing. I guess you could call me old school.
For me it’s always about the shot and framing. I don't want to have to think about the technical aspects of the gear when I am in a shooting mindset. It helps to know where Joe will be so you can try to line up some shots in advance. It helps to know what side of the stage to be on or what gear on stage will used in a song.
File Format: Nikon Raw NEF 14-bit and High Quality JPG at the same time.
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.3 to manage the photos.
Nik Software I use all of their plug-ins.
Adobe Photoshop CS5.
One B/W was first sharpened up first with Nik Software Define 2.0 and then a simple B/W conversion with Color Efex Pro 2.0.
The other B/W was processed with Silver Efx Pro 2.0.
Hope that helps! (And was not too much information)

Thanks for the great info!!! I've been reading up on the D3s (I have a 'much lower' stock D40 with both the kit lens and the 70-200 2.8 lens, (I know...I know...I'm wasting the 70-200 on an unworthy D40...) the D40 breaks down above ISO400 with noise in low light situations....sometimes 800 is tolerable, above that hell breaks loose. But then, the D40 is used as a general purpose DSLR for all the family shots, so it's sufficient...
I will try experimenting with the D40 some more (may use a monopod or something with lower ISO), but I'm sure your pics are going to top the lot!! Hey, you should be Joe's "official" cameraman!! These few shots you've posted are great...I may have to use them for a signed autograph at Reading!!! Would you be OK with that? Could I have the hi-res images to print on professional stock?
Now.... on to eBay for a used D3s body that I can 'afford'...
Yeah, thanks Viscott, good info. I'm still learning how to use my humble D70s, which I hope to bring to the Reading show (sitting right next to can1208 ). Should be fun to play around with it, see what sort of amateur shots I can get.
There are some good photographers over on JBXP too, Rick Phipps in particular.

Thanks for the nice compliments. Many years of working in the photo business and now just a serious hobby for me.
You're definitely going to want to upgrade that body. I had D80 and retired it long ago. When you see the difference in newer bodies you’ll feel the same about your D40. D700, D7000 or some of the new Nikon bodies will make a huge difference. The D3s is a very different camera then the D3 when it comes to low light. It really is a completely different camera. I am sure you can find some deals on D300, D700 bodies.
Nothing wrong with a DX body, the big thing is the speed of your glass and getting a camera that will give you clean results around 1600-2000 ISO. Full frame will give you more of a range and less noise. Of course this is all about your budget and what is important to you. Blue lights always tend to trip out the camera sensor. I wish lighting guys would mix up the colors more.
I shot these of a friend of mine a few years ago with my D300. I reduced the noise a little bit on these two shots. With the D3s you don’t need to do that.
He has a very cool Les Paul.
