Topic: The Healing Power of Music

Some of you know that I´m currently in the hospital. A weak ago both of my hip joints were replaced. The surgery went very well. Some time before I got a pill just to calm me down. As I usually don´t take any pills, I was simply overwhelmed and slept right away, coming really back to consciousness about 10 hours later. I felt fine and relieved.
Since two days I hardly slept at night - quite understandable because I had to lie on my back all the time. But there was much more about it. I felt outrageous about this @#$%^^&# state of being helpless and being stuck in a certain position. And my mind was producing all kinds of picture to illustrate this ending up in pictures being streched out on the surgery bed, arms and legs fixated, and a tube pressed in your mouth for anaesthesia.
So I realized that my body was starting to cope with the physical trauma of the operation. Your mind knows of course that the doctor is - in most cases- well-meaning and doesn´t torture for fun. Your body doesn´t know. So you are in a schizophrenic position that the mind is happy that the stuff is over while your body is in a state of severe trauma.

Lying there in my sleepless state I was thinking: why the #### do I have to sleep now? I sat up on my bed and put my Ipod on. Usual stuff: some Joe, ZZ Top, BOnnie Raitt, Derek, Warren... I put it on shuffle and realized after some time that I was weeping like hell, but not tears of desperation but of pure joy and bliss. I was telling myself: Well, you love this music, but dont´t you overdo it a bit at the moment. The weeping didn´t like to discuss it. Finally the whole tortured body was kind of shaking free from all this trauma. All I could say was: Music is so wonderful, life is so wonderful.

Thanks for that, Gunter! I hope you recover fully and quickly.

Music is powerful. For it's very calming - unless I deliberately want something loud to rile me up! It can also be deeply meditative, just sink in and let everything else vanish for a time.

Lieber Günter!

I had no idea! I am led to believe that recoveries from hip replacement surgery are usually remarkably fast, and I very much hope that this will prove to be true for you!

Thank you for your wonderful post about the emotions and effects that music can have. I empathize completely!  wink

Ich wünsche dir von ganzem Herzen eine baldige Besserung und Erlösung von den Schmerzen - und auf ein Wiedersehen dieses Jahr!

in 99% of the cases they do only one at a time. At the moment I´m walking with crutches, it´s not too bad. I´m sure we´ll meet somewhere this or the other side of the pond this year. Danke vielmals für Deine guten Wünsche, George.

Hope you make a good solid recovery Guenter.  Just don't try to do the splits straight away, ok?

Music hath charms ... and all that, whether it makes you cry, laugh or scowl it's all a good emotional release.

Re: The Healing Power of Music

Wishing you a speedy recovery Guenter. Work hard in the rehab, it will lead to a fine result. Keep playing that good music and your life will be on an even keel soonest.

Guenter,

One at a time is what I thought, but what the hell, why drag things out.  There's a lot of truth to the curative power of music so rock on.  Before the weather gets real nice you'll be ready for action.  Btw, were you one of those rayon wearin' disco studs from back in the day?  Remember, not everybody can be a Travolta.  I know you got this on your iPod, but if not........

Guenter,

I am so very glad to hear that you're on the road to recovery. Wow 2 new hips! That's a serious operation in one shot. Thank goodness for music and pain killers. Rehabilitation is going to be your job for a while so be sure to keep your ipod handy.

Here's a song I hope you enjoy.......something a little different.

Re: The Healing Power of Music

My mom did double knee a few years back and she said that double doses of pain meds and double sessions of rehab made a huge difference in recovery time. She also said that doing both was the right decision. If she had done just one, the pain in rehab would have put her off the second. Don't be reluctant to use a lot of analgesics in rehab, there are a lot of muscles that need to be stretched out.

Re: The Healing Power of Music

Gunter, I wish you the best in the recovery. You certainly have the right attitude and if the music heals your mind and soul, then dancing again won't be far behind. Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Re: The Healing Power of Music

Fear is the mind kill.  Love conquers all.  Love is the great spirit.  Gratitude kills fear.  The positive energy that flows through (not to, but through) us is love and heals us.

The negative energy comes from 100 kinds of fear.  It seeks to paralyze us.  Inadaquate?  I have become reaquainted with this fear over the last 13 months.  When I try to heal by only my own will, I am frustrated with lack of progress.

Thank you for sharing, I am with you, in mind, body & spirit.  Music is healing.  We are friends.

Having been through a few major surgeries myself with a life of fulltime unrelenting chronic pain, I fully understand the games the mind plays if you allow it to seep to the surface. Music is a wonderful blessing that rejuvenates the soul!

Take it slow and easy and I wish you a ultra speedy recovery.

Re: The Healing Power of Music

I've had a cold for about a week. I tried rubbing cd's all over my chest last night and it does NOT seem to have helped.

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

Re: The Healing Power of Music

Very well said my friend and my hopes are for your speedy and complete recovery. smile Music is such a great therapy whether it be physical or mental healing that we need. And don't despair, I know you were looking forward to trying out for either the Packer's field goal kicker or punter positions, but I think your chosen profession has worked well for you. wink If that brought at least a smile to your face Günter, then that is what I was trying to do. Don't forget, it's good to shed tears of joy, but it's equally as good to have a smile on your face always. smile

Be Well Buddy,

Roy
