Topic: You've got some nerve Joe Bonamassa...

Who do you think you are selling out 2 nights in a row, same stage, same theatre, same town?  And the nerve of you starting up the Boogie Woogie from the wings, stage right,  before you even get under the lights.  Starting a contagious fire that runs through the crowd and brings them to their feet when you finally do appear 8 seconds later..  You be's gwinter hoit somebody.  Folks aren't used to showmanship & artistic professionalism.  tongue

Saturday night:

Open with Cradle Rock (a salute to the Irish one) done Bonamassa style.  Breakdown with the dual leads almost sounds like a nod to Zep. then ramp it back up to a thunderous lead.  So know the crowd knows what to expect, right?

But no, slide right into that Minor Blues classic you have made your own.  So Many Roads.  And the tone OMG that haunting moan of that fat guitar.  Can you count to 12?  wink  I love the feeling of that masterpiece.  Such a fat screaming slow blues played with all the tasty tricks the boys put together.

Now can you say syncopation?  Sometimes the simplest stuff is so hard to play well.  When the Fire Hits the Sea chugs like a mating call from the old "been on the road too long" school.  Bring it on home to me.  Yes I know it.  Somebody help me.

SILT gets better every time I hear it.  It's just a tune you have to do LIVE.  If Heartaches Were Nickels is one the those great blues tunes that completely disproves that old BS about 3 chords and boring.  Gotta give Carmine a shout out here.  He is so perfectly in tune to what these songs need to become a force unto themselves...so busy, but so tasty...always complementary, never conflicting...I think y'all been practicing a lil bit.  lol

Slow Train Running caught me by surprise.  Kinda like Robert Johnson meets Black Sabbath no Led Zeppelin, no ... um...  well shoot I told you it caught me by surprise.  And Rick gets the pat on the back here for putting the Hammond B3 with Leslie wall of sound behind James Joseph Patrick Leonard Page Bonamassa.

I'll tell you more tomorrow.  I'm is a tired man.  You rocked too hard for me  cool

Re: You've got some nerve Joe Bonamassa...

AW-RITEY then:  Black Rock!

Steal Your Heart Away could make Bobby Parker look like Don King.  You know his hair is perfect.  How dare you play these Caucasians such blues rock.  That stuff was secret, man...and then to slide into Sloe Gin on a gently swelling wave of Ricks piano...I had to move outa my road dawg corner stage right to see if the audience was crying.  Sing some more Dude!  I have been that  "...lonely...ain't even high..."  Mercy...

After a self deprecating "bit of wit" to quote the AmsterHammer.  Here comes rock riff; no...blues riff; er...number 12 anyway.  The atmosphere was electric already.  Now the John Henry lightning struck and the Bogie thunder rolled and it began to rain inside.  The haze was thick.

C'mon man.  I remember Happier Times.  Tension? Release?  Lyrics?  Vocals?  Guitar?  I don't drink anymore, but this tune could make me drink alone and cry in my Wild Turkey.  Best to write a tune and leave the wreckage of the past asleep.  Ah, wreckage of the past...

Pat Travers; 70s rock survivor joined you onstage after a lovely intro (I admit to mixed emotions, but you are a class act) and we were Further On Up The Road.  Pat defended himself well, trading licks and fills...nice to hear a different guitar once in a while.  I sang most of that tune in hambone's ear...poor SOB.  A jar of HOTT made up for it.  roll

Then in to Blues Deluxe...and...out of Blues Deluxe to a roar from the crowd.  Thank you Pat Travers.

Young Man's Blues!  Tight stops and starts driven by the Bogesters right foot and proof positive that every song does not have to be 240 bars of guitar self indulgence.  Thank you Thank you thank you.  I know you already know that.  Tight rhythm section and then a solo where every note means something and into a funky breakdown.  Make a cripple dance...

Woke Up Dreaming caused all the fire alarms to go off!  Nobody moved!  Well maybe one of the stage hands scrambled in a panic to throw the switch, but you had them in the palm of your hand.  Awesome.  You have a lick or two.

And we change guitars and eased in to Mountain Time, with some different intro licks than I expected, as the boys suited up and slid into position.  I know this is an old favorite.  This one causes even some of the fellows to choke up and get misty...sniff..not mee...pbbbbt...though.  hmm    lol

Bird On A Wire?  Have you ever noticed that Rick & Leonard favor?  I believe they're related.   smile  Nice!  very nice indeed.  "...to be free..."  Wait is that the Flying Vee?  Oh Oh scorched earth time.

Let's see.  This side?  hmmm Not bad, but let's hear a roar.  How about this side?  ok thumbs up  How about up there where it's hard to breathe?  YES! now we're talking.  Got me a pocket ful of change...

Well that kicked A$$.  Again Carmine you are an unsung hero.  Legendary...

You know you've got a crew, Joe.  Shout out to Aaron, Colin, Dave & Warren.  These guys are pros.  Always good to see things work.  I KNOW what it takes.  RESPECT.  Clancy & crew:  just perfect.

As good as Jacksonville was and as dumpy as the Plaza was, the sound was better here, cleaner somehow.  This show was at 100%.  SOLD OUT!  SRO!  I'm an old hand at this & I remain impressed at the delivery of a rock solid SHOW.

I mean a SHOW people!  This is not some show up drunk and try to start a jam, band, but a well oiled machine rising up out of road weary exhaustion to fly high and loud.  Not some cold, mechanical, go through the motions, machine...NO Sir.  A fire breathing dragon that can rise up, lay waste to the bad guys and carry the heros home safe.

Heart & Soul.  Rock & Roll and a Bluesy Stroll for Young & Old, that's my story.  Sunday review later.

I laughed when I read this.  You are too cute, witchy woman!  Then late last night, I had a stray fear pop up.  To those of you who don't know the "Elders" and/or I really well, I must point out a few things:  Joe would never stoop so low as to force my hand at anything, nor I him.  It's an inside joke having to do with my age & grouchiness.   wink Love ya Sis.  Ya got me!  tongue  Besides who gwinter make de Doc (or MuchJoe) do anyting, mon?   cool

Now Sunday night, second show at the Plaza:

Joe announced to cast & crew earlier in the evening, "Tonight is old school night."  I gave up a prayer of thanks to the great spirit.  I love mixing it up!

So the canned music stopped and the opening riffs to Cradle Rock rip open that pre-show haze, and the lights flash on and MuchJoe appears, grinning like he means it.  The crowd rises with a roar and the band begins to boogie hard.  OOOH Yeah!  I'm certain Rory said:  "Thanks Joe.  Sing it, man!"  and play like a house afire.

and right into So It's Like That and I flashed Red marching herself in place.  Touch that guitar, girl.  Rick found a sweet spot &  played on his B3 just to push the guitar player a bit.  tongue

After the yelling eased up a lil bit, joe was noodling some pretty stuff and then stepped up to the mic..."I wish you could see me, Babe..."  The entire theatre just fell apart and the crowd rose again.  What a gift, Warren.  Fatsby wishes he could sing and play like Joe.  Real BLUES; both heart rending and asskicking.  Give it up.  The universe stirs with power.  and then

Last Kiss?  whoa I didn't expect that!  And Bogie was on, pushing that song like a runaway bus full of tourists going downhill.  Carmine right in there with him, pumping bottom, chugging like a twin diesel locomotive.  "...pack my suitcase and get the hell out of town..."  But I'm gonna steal that last kiss.

So Many Roads was next and y'all already know how I feel about an Otis Rush minor blues.  WOW!  Soaring good stuff.  and I'm reminded that the road we're on is the Lonsome one.  Life on the road... neutral The band was on!

So now our mind turns, as it would, to Happier Times, a bittersweet memory and every one of those 999 people in the audience sat down hard...and then roared to life when it ended with a flourish.  Then from John Henry to Black Rock...

Steal your Heart Away and Joe sings so expressively these days I don't know how...I mean...jeez.

I must explain myself a lil bit.  I'm a musician and slightly psychotic about a band must play together.  Having said that, understand that anything in the 90s on the FDOL's grading scale is still an A.  I've never heard this band, even with mistakes & equipment failures, earn less than an A.

Sloe Gin:  Ezra should thank you and yours.  Beautiful keys work for Joe to ride on...so tasty.
The power you bring...  and then time for old #12.  Sounds like a whiskey, doesn't it?  but NO, it's

John Henry.  Riff master rocking blues ode to the working man.  Well deserved.  This bunch works hard.  So Never Make Your Move Too Soon.  The DivineMsTia says timing is everything.   lol

The Great Flood could be 60 seconds shorter but that's just me.  Joe is just flawless on this one.  for a young man  wink

Young Man's Blues has those stops and starts that separate the men fom the boys.  So clean and sharp this night.  Hold on to your head, or they will blow it off.  and the stage goes dark and then with Acoustic in hand, Joe lays waste to any and all pretenders, to the throne or otherwise.

India/Django/WokeupDreaming/MountainTime.  Now you know why Joe wears gloves when it's cold outside and he's greeting fans & family.  How can anybody move their fingers that fast?  And they're done.  Can we breathe now?  Sure, enough to holler for an encore!

Bird On A Wire on the Tele? tonight.  Just beautiful.  And the Flying Vee gets strapped on and the audience fastens their seat belt and we're off.  Joe was hot, Carmine was brilliant in this one.  He and Bogie welded together with Joe and Rick and blew me outa the hall.  I don't know whether to break all my fingers or lock myself in my practice room.   lol

110% gentlemen.  I don't give that often, but hot damn what a show.  Can I get an amen?
