I bet it's been a while since you had a homework assignment. Well I give you an A+, gold star, smiley face, etc. I loved ever word, ever image, and am tickled pink at the joy you felt. You are loved!! Sister Cate
I laughed when I read this. You are too cute, witchy woman! Then late last night, I had a stray fear pop up. To those of you who don't know the "Elders" and/or I really well, I must point out a few things: Joe would never stoop so low as to force my hand at anything, nor I him. It's an inside joke having to do with my age & grouchiness. Love ya Sis. Ya got me! Besides who gwinter make de Doc (or MuchJoe) do anyting, mon?
Now Sunday night, second show at the Plaza:
Joe announced to cast & crew earlier in the evening, "Tonight is old school night." I gave up a prayer of thanks to the great spirit. I love mixing it up!
So the canned music stopped and the opening riffs to Cradle Rock rip open that pre-show haze, and the lights flash on and MuchJoe appears, grinning like he means it. The crowd rises with a roar and the band begins to boogie hard. OOOH Yeah! I'm certain Rory said: "Thanks Joe. Sing it, man!" and play like a house afire.
and right into So It's Like That and I flashed Red marching herself in place. Touch that guitar, girl. Rick found a sweet spot & played on his B3 just to push the guitar player a bit.
After the yelling eased up a lil bit, joe was noodling some pretty stuff and then stepped up to the mic..."I wish you could see me, Babe..." The entire theatre just fell apart and the crowd rose again. What a gift, Warren. Fatsby wishes he could sing and play like Joe. Real BLUES; both heart rending and asskicking. Give it up. The universe stirs with power. and then
Last Kiss? whoa I didn't expect that! And Bogie was on, pushing that song like a runaway bus full of tourists going downhill. Carmine right in there with him, pumping bottom, chugging like a twin diesel locomotive. "...pack my suitcase and get the hell out of town..." But I'm gonna steal that last kiss.
So Many Roads was next and y'all already know how I feel about an Otis Rush minor blues. WOW! Soaring good stuff. and I'm reminded that the road we're on is the Lonsome one. Life on the road... The band was on!
So now our mind turns, as it would, to Happier Times, a bittersweet memory and every one of those 999 people in the audience sat down hard...and then roared to life when it ended with a flourish. Then from John Henry to Black Rock...
Steal your Heart Away and Joe sings so expressively these days I don't know how...I mean...jeez.
I must explain myself a lil bit. I'm a musician and slightly psychotic about a band must play together. Having said that, understand that anything in the 90s on the FDOL's grading scale is still an A. I've never heard this band, even with mistakes & equipment failures, earn less than an A.
Sloe Gin: Ezra should thank you and yours. Beautiful keys work for Joe to ride on...so tasty.
The power you bring... and then time for old #12. Sounds like a whiskey, doesn't it? but NO, it's
John Henry. Riff master rocking blues ode to the working man. Well deserved. This bunch works hard. So Never Make Your Move Too Soon. The DivineMsTia says timing is everything.
The Great Flood could be 60 seconds shorter but that's just me. Joe is just flawless on this one. for a young man
Young Man's Blues has those stops and starts that separate the men fom the boys. So clean and sharp this night. Hold on to your head, or they will blow it off. and the stage goes dark and then with Acoustic in hand, Joe lays waste to any and all pretenders, to the throne or otherwise.
India/Django/WokeupDreaming/MountainTime. Now you know why Joe wears gloves when it's cold outside and he's greeting fans & family. How can anybody move their fingers that fast? And they're done. Can we breathe now? Sure, enough to holler for an encore!
Bird On A Wire on the Tele? tonight. Just beautiful. And the Flying Vee gets strapped on and the audience fastens their seat belt and we're off. Joe was hot, Carmine was brilliant in this one. He and Bogie welded together with Joe and Rick and blew me outa the hall. I don't know whether to break all my fingers or lock myself in my practice room.
110% gentlemen. I don't give that often, but hot damn what a show. Can I get an amen?
