They have no ideas, no clue to what people want. We buy ipods and macs and iphones...we don't need them in guitars.
There are so many great alternatives out there these days that Gibson would be weeping if they weren't rolling around in green from the collectors and RRP buyers. If you buy a Gibson these days for over $3000, you're nuts...you better claim a gold Klon while you're there.
...and this comes from a guy who loved Gibson guitars and owns a LP (speaking of which, Les is stirring up that grave right now). Along with music, times have changed for the big, faceless companies. Luckily we have the 2nd hand market and some superb smaller makers. *my opinion*
Good Day Dave,
I respect your comments and opinions about Gibson, although the I.T
comments maybe not so much...By the way, I AM ONE of the I.T. GUYS
you speak of, with disdain...
Quite honestly..I'm not someone who just "Bumbles" around at home, I am a serious
semi pro musician, when I'm not troubleshooting our network of over 100 systems
including servers, workstations, laptops and all of wireless communications, I am either
playing, rehearsing or recording my music, with one of my guitars. I currently
have 8 (including an EPI LP) from acoustic 12 string to Roland 700 series synth.
Being an I.T. "Nerd" hasn't hurt me much, especially when you consider I configured my Home
Studio setup utilizing Cubase 5 Studio and many of the VST Instrument Plugins.
It's not trivial, and requires patience and persistence to learn this stuff..you have to learn
about sound engineering...it not easy, and I've worked hard to obtain a nice
recording setup. These days with all that's available in computers and software
I think it's an advantage to have an advanced knowledge of systems and software
if you want to be able to explore your musical creativity and get it recorded.
It hasn't dampened my creativity, learning to be digitally inclined.
Getting back to Gibson;
I've OWNED two 74 Gibson LP Customs, (1 was stolen and the other I had to hock in bad
times) at that time..Gibson was owned by Norlin and all everybody did, was complain about
Gibson "selling out" to the corporations.
Both of those 20th anniversary LP's I had, were great guitars, and I bought them both
for less than $500 in 1975. I miss them both. They're worth big money now.
I would buy another LP in a heartbeat right now, if I had the dough.
Yeah, there are great alternatives out there, but I like several of the models that are being
produced by Gibson...Especially the "Artist" models at Wildwood (ie) Joe's signature
model..they're going for $4K..I'd buy one.
Is it too much money..you bet! Would I still buy it..You bet!
Will it be a great guitar..again..You Bet! ........Ask Joe what he thinks about his.
On the other hand...I can get a "used" LP for a fair amount less, or even a nice newer
LP, if I shop around and do my homework.
All great guitars these days are overpriced..part of the problem is
the USDLR isn't worth crap...thanks to the US Government,.... that doesn't help matters.
That's why Gold is $1300/ounce too.
Gibson is still producing some very desirable guitars..that's my HO.
Take care,
Cheers
