Re: Just when you thought...

They do not make guitars for the player any more...just the I.T guys who bumble around at home for a couple of minutes.
They have no ideas, no clue to what people want. We buy ipods and macs and iphones...we don't need them in guitars.

There are so many great alternatives out there these days that Gibson would be weeping if they weren't rolling around in green from the collectors and RRP buyers. If you buy a Gibson these days for over $3000, you're nuts...you better claim a gold Klon while you're there.

...and this comes from a guy who loved Gibson guitars and owns a LP (speaking of which, Les is stirring up that grave right now). Along with music, times have changed for the big, faceless companies. Luckily we have the 2nd hand market and some superb smaller makers. *my opinion*

Exactly, if I was going to buy a Gibson, a Les Paul or something, I would just buy one second hand, otherwise you just.... hmm.... I think I made my point...

Eugh...the Randy Rhoads Les Paul Custard.

Sickly price too...

Re: Just when you thought...

I agree that Gibson can put out whatever they want.  I think Gibson is making some great examples of their classic guitars. You can get a V, Explorer, LP, SG, 335, or 330.  You can also get some crazy signature models so those of us who have more money than brains... And if you want a crazy firebird that can do your dishes for you they make one of those also.

Henry Kaiser could probably do some horrible things with a Firebird X.  That said I think Gibson is making great guitars. And there is something to say for guitars that cost 3000 dollars.  If they were 300 dollars they'd be made in Mexico and we'd all own twenty and we'd complain about how they used to make them.

So lets just play our guitars and if you hate gibsons then dont buy them.  Go buy a PRS.  They are a great company.

Re: Just when you thought...

If I had 3 grand to spend on a guitar I wouldn't go for a Gibson either.
Collings look incredible. Companies like that appeal to me way more than Gibson now!

Re: Just when you thought...

I would trade my R8 right now for a Collings I35 I think its called.  Its the 335 type guitar they build.  That is a beautiful guitar with amazing tone.  I'll probably never own one.

Good Day Dave,

I respect your comments and opinions about Gibson, although the I.T
comments maybe not so much...By the way, I AM ONE of the I.T. GUYS
you speak of, with what appears to be disdain...

Quite honestly..I'm not someone who just "Bumbles" around at home, I am a serious
semi pro musician, when I'm not troubleshooting our network of over 100 systems
including servers, workstations, laptops and all of wireless communications,  I am either
playing, rehearsing or recording my music, with one of my guitars. I currently
have 8 (including an EPI LP) from acoustic 12 string to Roland 700 series synth.

Being an I.T. "Nerd" hasn't hurt me much, especially when you consider I configured my Home
Studio setup utilizing  Cubase 5 Studio  and many of the VST Instrument Plugins.
It's not trivial, and requires patience and persistence to learn this stuff..you have to learn
about sound engineering...it not easy, and I've worked hard to obtain the working
knowledge to be able to utilize the software, and a acquire a nice digital recording setup.

These days with all that's available in computers and software
I think it's an advantage to have an advanced knowledge of systems and software
if you want to be able to explore  your musical creativity and get it recorded.

Remember, 20-30 years ago, you could not have done ANY of this..all PRO recording
equipment was WAY OUT Of financial reach, for the average musician.
I feel fortunate that the PC revolution has changed this.
It hasn't dampened my creativity, learning to be digitally inclined.

Getting back to Gibson;

I've  OWNED two 74 Gibson LP Customs, (1 was stolen and the other I had to hock in bad
times) at that time..Gibson was owned by Norlin and all everybody did, was complain about
Gibson "selling out" to the corporations.
Both of those 20th anniversary LP's I had, were great guitars, and I bought them both
for less than $500 in 1975. I miss them both. They're worth big money now.
I would buy another LP in a heartbeat right now, if I had the dough.

Yeah, there are great alternatives out there, but I like several of the models that are being
produced by Gibson...Especially the "Artist" models at Wildwood (ie) Joe's signature
model..they're going for $4K..I'd buy one.

Is it too much money..you bet! Would I still buy it..You bet!
Will it be a great guitar..again..You Bet! ........Ask Joe what he thinks about his.

On the other hand...I can get a "used" LP for a fair amount less, or even a nice newer
LP, if I shop around and do my homework.
All great guitars these days are overpriced..part of the problem is
the USDLR isn't worth crap...thanks to the US Government,.... that doesn't help matters.

That's why Gold is $1300/ounce too.
Gibson is still producing some very desirable guitars..that's my HO.

Take care,

Cheers

Fair reply...I accept it...wasn't being wholly serious with that and pointing fingers an all - it's just the general view of the guys with lots of money that can easily buy these instruments when they could be put to making some really fantastic music - if you have fun with those guitars, well there you go...enjoy! Sure, I'd like to play those guitars, but Gibson know the market they are aiming at with these and it isn't the musicians trying to work their way up the ladder (we get either total tat from a Korean factory or hideously overpriced and mildly lame 'Studios' - yes, elsewhere is a good idea).

Regarding the I.T point more, I used to work with computers and I can build, fix, maintain etc etc (sure, not as highly skilled as you it sounds)...I left that area for other reasons and it wasn't the worst thing in the world (thank god for Macs though).

It is clear from the internet gathering of information that Gibson have gone though times of making seriously fantastic instruments and times of dropping the ball...off the face of the earth. I still stick by thinking that 2000-20... they are going through one of the times people will look back on and cringe  wink

I'll leave it at that...I don't want even a minor mood of TGP creeping in here...that's another level.

*note: Heritage are utterly crazy prices in the UK...I would play a handful of Gibsons and find the best one regardless of the principle behind it*

Re: Just when you thought...

Good Day Dave....

Happy Holidays to ya mate....

You are right about TGP..it has at times gotten somewhat hostile over there

especially about trivial things. I don't like Character Assassinations though,

like what they were doing to JB recently, but I still like that forum..

I think you have to pick and chose your battles...

I like discussing all things musical and I respect ALL opinions..even the ones

I strongly disagree with.

Take care and thanks for thoughtful discussion about a company I think most

of us would like to see, maybe move back to its roots..rather than focusing on

marketing, and selling "PRODUCT".

Cheers mate!

Re: Just when you thought...

I look forward to "Bumble" tonight on my CS Strats, Les Paul, Heritage H535, etc with $150 cables that go into my $500 Klon and into my other $200-300 OD pedals that finally reach my Two Rock combo to hope to create sometihng and or if not, just noodle for a few minutes....hmmm, on the other hand, maybe Bumble on my Martin for a few minutes.

Great idea, if time permits I'll make and post a YouTube guitar lesson video and or better yet for Bumblers like me....a Gear Video ...now we're talking, they'll appreciate the "overpriced stuff"....lol.
