Re: Buddy Guy

What follows is a short review i posted on another non blues related board regarding a bg show i saw earlier this evening.  repost here, i'd like to write a unique one here but I just do not have the time.  Anyway, Im amazed!

I had the pleasure of seeing Buddy Guy tonight. Wow. What a show.

This is not just honoring a legend. Believe me, I saw BB Kind around 4 or 5 years ago. the show was good, but it was what it was. great stories, very excellent band, a few nice licks that were awesome coming from beeb, but could have been played by almost anyone capable of holding a guitar.

At 74, Buddy is one of the top five soloists I've ever seen and I've seen a fair few. Jaysus was he phenomenal. He really seemed to give it his all in spite of being at a tiny date that wasn't even listed on his tour. He can still outplay nearly everyone in the world at his age, simply incredible. See him if you get the opportunity because, damn. I love electric blues and have seen a fair few acts and he is still as good as (almost) anyone out there currently in their prime.

edit:  I was at crossroads...he was good there...but...crossroads also was what it was...and what it was was a ton of short little restrained sets (sad but true) though no one can deny it brought about a lot of cool collaborations...anyway, this set in springfield, il, which ill go out on a limb and say won't be his best show on the tour, was one of the top shows i've ever seen.  beat the hell out of crossroads (though he and j lang together were awesome)

Buddy brings it every show, looks for who he sees grinning like he is so apt to do, and delivers...or as he says, they can't say I didn't try.  cool

Re: Buddy Guy

What a treat you got to see Buddy doing his thing Suhl. Rocket's comment about those with the grin took me back 4 years when he came out in the crowd and wandered over to where my wife and I were standing with s... eating grins on our faces and just stopped for a minute and gave a private show to the geriatric set from 3 feet! His grin was bigger than ours.   big_smile  cool Taint no one like him! A National Treasure.

Hey, now I know why he gave me a wink when I was grinning like a Cheshire cat from the stage barrier at Shepherds Bush.  big_smile

Nice review, Suhl.  smile

Re: Buddy Guy

This thread has reminded me that my review of Buddy's gig at Shepherds Bush appeared in a recent issue of Blues Matters. Here it is:

BUDDY GUY
@Shepherds Bush Empire, London. 05/07/10
From the moment he stepped onto the stage at this sell out show it was evident that for a man approaching his 75th year, Buddy Guy has the energy and cheeky glint in his eyes one would expect of a man half his age. Supported by his four piece band comprising keyboards, drums, rhythm and bass guitars, the audience was enthralled by a short but very sweet 75 minute set of favourites and mini tributes. With the tributes consisting of a few bars followed by some improvisation, it was the favourites that were played in full. These were: ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’ and a funky ‘Boom Boom’ (both arguably tributes), ‘Damn Right I Got The Blues’, ‘Skin Deep’, ‘Do Your Thing’, ‘Fever’ and ‘(Someone’s) Slipping In’, which, with Guy’s encouragement, had everyone yelling back “Slipping In”. Then came the tributes to some of the numerous artists Guy has influenced over the years. After praising Cream he played ‘Strange Brew’ and followed later with ‘Sunshine Of Your Love’, There was some irony in Guy’s choice of the former as Clapton confessed to Guy many years ago that some of its guitar licks had actually been “stolen” from him. Another artist that Guy had a huge influence on was Hendrix and we were treated to a few bars of Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) before he disappeared stage left. He reappeared amongst the audience where he spent a few minutes playing as he battled his way to the rear of the hall. Back on stage Guy illustrated some of the tricks that have been copied by so many guitarists over the years, including Hendrix, by playing his cream Strat’ with his teeth, a drumstick and even the front of his psychedelic shirt. Guy has definitely still got it; his voice is as strong as ever and his playing has lost none of the edge that has spawned so many imitators since the early 60s. Guy loved the reaction from the audience and they knew they had witnessed a performance by a legend.

Re: Buddy Guy

The last time I caught Buddy and his Band was at Summerfest in Milwaukee a year ago this past June. Davy Knowles and Back Door Slam had thoroughly heated up the audience during their rousing set, but then Buddy and Company took the stage. The entire Chicago throng who had made the trip up to see The Man stood up on the benches that we had been sitting on and so, the rest of us stood the entire time Buddy performed. Here's one I was able to catch as everyone around me grooved and danced on the benches. It was one heck of a night!

Re: Buddy Guy

I was in his Chicago blues club 2 weeks ago when Eddie Shaw & the Wolf Gang (ex Howlin Wolf guys) were playing and Buddy came in and sang a song with them (basically about him having sex with a 19 year old). At half time I got a cd autographed and when he asked where I was from I said Scotland and he said I was there not long ago. No you were in Manchester & London which is England. Oh, right enough he says. I then said maybe you can play there promoting your new album. What new album? The one that comes out 26 October. Oh that one!! Gotta love the guy eh?

Re: Buddy Guy

Probably was She's Nineteen Years Old by Muddy Waters. He also did a cover of this on his Feels Like Rain album.

Re: Buddy Guy

I saw Buddy Guy for the first time Tuesday night in Wilmington, Delaware, the day of his release "Living Proof".  Of all the musicians on my bucket list, I have had nothing but conflicts getting to see Buddy.  I'm so happy I finally got to see him after selling my front row tickets in May.

What an entertaining and talented musician!!! I only briefly listened to the new CD, but Skin Deep is frequently in my rotation, absolutely love Best Damn Fool.  It is my favorite song to crank up on that CD!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8cOHcaNDQw  Buddy went into a story about his mom and what the expression Skin Deep means to him, which was cool.  If you overlooked getting this CD, I highly recommend it.

I am a big Shemekia Copeland fan, but did not know Buddy's bass player is her husband, who is a very nice man.  He gave his bass strings to my friend at a show on Saturday.  And I got a verbal commitment from Buddy's camp to mail his strings to the StringsforaCURE foundation.  smile
