Just found out that Buddy Guy is playing this year's Cornbury festival in July in the UK. This was a festival that Joe played a couple of years ago and whilst there's a real mixed back of acts it's a great laid back little festival.
Thinking of going along again - Anybody seen Buddy Guy and can recommend?
It will live in your memory as one of the best acts you've see. Buddy Brings It! He loves to leave the stage in an outdoor venue and stroll through the crowd as he plays. Epic!
Of course, being a living legend doesn't hurt either.
My favorite memory: Buddy in the middle of his act, starts a blues song on the polka dot, stops about 8 bars in, says "must be something wrong with the guitar, you folks are too calm", the tech runs out with a vintage strat, Buddy plugs in, and lays down a perfect rendition of Purple Haze. Just like Jimi. (and yes, I heard the original live!) The crowd went wild!

Saw him last year.
It was expensive, for what it was, but I figured that as a living legend I wasn't likely to see him again. So to be in a small club in Hanover and watch him 'entertain' was something quite special.
He gets sidetracked. He starts and stops, and pretty much does what he wants. I don't think they have a set list. Maybe a loose agreement beforehand which is why his band has to be so good 'cos he just goes off and does whatever takes his fancy.
We got the Hendrix treatment which then led to a walk thru demo of all the guitarists of the late '60s and early '70's that probably namecheck him as an influence. He got off the stage and went behind the bar and played to the girl serving drinks for one song.
The set was quite short which is the trade off I guess. He's not a young man and some of his guitar stunts are high energy so don't expect him to be up there for a long time unless he is really in the mood.
I was glad to have seen him and to know how he is. He can still cut it now but what it must have been to have caught him in his prime.
If you are getting a deal and he is on the bill then its a no brainer.

I saw Buddy open for Santana, back in July of 1994, in Stowe VT. It was an unplanned show for me, and a complete delight... both Buddy and Santana. Buddy was a kinda old dude even back then, but he sure was great. Not sure how the years have treated him, but I'd say he's still one to see, while you still can.
I was actually only up there in VT for The Grateful Dead's Highgate show (my brother lives 10 minutes from there), which was the very next day, not too far away. Well the Santana/Buddy Guy show must've been lagging in ticket sales, and the whole area happened to be inundated with Deadheads, so the morning of the show they announced that anyone with a Dead ticket could buy Santana/Buddy Guy tickets at half price. I'd never seen either of them before, it was a beautiful day, I had it to kill, and I can't resist a bargain like that... actually one of the few times I didn't go with the cheap seats, lol. The place was a like a natural amphitheatre in the side of the mountain at Smuggler's Notch... beautiful area... it's a shame the venue doesn't exist anymore.
Well I went off on memory lane for a minute there, haha... but anyway, yeah, go see Buddy!

I am seeing Buddy Guy for the first time in May with Jimmy Vaughn. I'm thrilled! I've had a scheduling conflict every time he came my way for the last couple of years.
Yes Ray, I'd agree with the others, go and see Buddy. I went to see him a couple of years ago. He's still got it, a great guitarist and vocalist. Don't go with the expectation of him playing a range of songs as per the studio versions, he quite often goes on tangent, stops songs early and starts up others. He's the ultimate showman, Hendrix and co learned so much from him. Will be a reat show! 
It´s no question: you have to go. I saw him live only once about 15 years ago in London, and I was very impressed.

If you decide against Cornbury, Buddy Guy is also on at the Shepherds Bush Empire on 5th July - looks like I'll be seeing him there. Bit of a distance for you though.

I met Buddy a few years ago in his bar in Chicago. I sat down at the bar, ordered a beer, looked to my right and there he was. Sitting next to me having a drink! Couldn't believe it. An amazingly kind man. I would never miss an opportunity to see him live
Just saw B.B. and Buddy play in Minneapolis last month. Buddy KILLED IT!!!! He was so energetic and fun throughout the whole night and his playing was nothing short of fierce. We got to hear him play Voodoo Child>Strange Brew>Voodoo Child and the whole place went absolutely nuts. His band was killer and Buddy had the place rocking the entire set. I can't wait to see him at Crossroads and hopefully at his club sometime that weekend!
After receiving mixed responses as to whether or not Buddy Guy is still worth seeing, my gig buddy David (currymandavid) and I were unsure if we should lay out nearly £40 ($60) each to see him at Shepherds Bush. Having read the positive reviews of Buddy's performance at Crossroads last week (and just to get a little of the Crossoads atmosphere), we took the plunge last week and grabbed some tickets on ebay for tonight's sold out gig.
Will let you know how it goes tomorrow. Anyone else going from here?

I may get crucified for saying this but I'm not all that keen. I saw him opening for Gary Moore in Montreux 2 years ago and I was not impressed. I don't regret seeing him but it was nothing to write home about.
Wooders, you and Curryman will enjoy the gig. People still lay out good money to see BB King who is just a shell of his best. Buddy still brings it. Maybe Bluesbreaker caught him on a bad night. I would go just so I could say I'd seen him. He is, after all, a living legend! Bad or good, give us the goods on the show. Enjoy! The last time I saw him he rocked the house. I'd go again in a heartbeat. BB King again? A waste of money IMO.

I have seen Buddy Guy several times, and he deliver the goods every time. I won't ever forget the first time I saw him. He came on stage and played like God! He usually takes a trip among the audiense and it's fantastic! He's one of the greatest of all times, so go and enjoy him! As mentioned in this thread, he's a living legend.
If you ain't happy, I refund your ticket;-)

Just got home from seeing Buddy Guy. I'm too tired to post a review now but I can tell you he put on a hugely enjoyable show. That man plays like one of the greats. Hang on a minute, he IS one of the greats.

Told ya! We should all pray to be doing that at that age. I think he's close to 75!
