Re: Arm update- Warning! depressing content....

I am........

Out of plaster!

Saw the surgeon y'day. He concluded we had to do it even though still a lot of pain as if he kept it on longer mobility would worsen.

Anyway, I tried to fret a chord or 2 last night after the Leic show (best of the 3 I saw on the tour) and it was difficult. My index finger is the main issue- almost arthritic pain in it- like it's locking up. Early days.

I wanna get one of those spring loaded 'riffmaster' things- you know the finger exerciser....

i've been using a stress ball for exercise. you can get some that are filled with a gel that offers more resistance when it's cold and eases up as it gets warm. been working really well as a warm up aid before i play and worked well when i first took my splint off.

they look a little weird, but they work great.  http://www.hawkin.com/20670-08842/squishy-mesh-ball

A finger exerciser would be the best thing you can do for yourself. I just pray you have no nerve damage as I did. If nothing else just keep work those fingers dude!

Cheers!

Re: Arm update- Warning! depressing content....

My fingers swell up uncontrolably when I drive, fish, or play guitar for more than a few hours. I just saw an arthridic doctor about it... prepared with photos. They took 7 vials of blood to send out... all came back normal except I was low in Vitamin D. So I have no idea what's wrong. The sides of my knuckles hurt when touched, and the skin on my fingers get so tight it's hard to bend them. takes about 3 days and ice/apirin regiment.

Re: Arm update- Warning! depressing content....

that's a great idea.

might i suggest starting your exercise with no resistance initially, or very minimal resistance at most. fretting is a great motion for minimal-resistance finger motion, as is playing with rubber bands. if you go from a disuse situation (like yours) to instant resistance, you will be in pain AND you run the risk of damaging ligaments and/or over-straining the soft tissues in the area which will cause inflammation and swelling, making things even more painful and hard to move...

ease into things. another great alleviation for the joint/soft tissue pain is a product called bio-freeze. its basically a stronger from of vick's vapor rub, which you could also use. i use bio-freeze on my knees and fingers for joint pain, and on sore muscles. best invention ever, besides of course the guitar!!

i'll send you a tube if you'd like. shoot me an email with your address.

best of luck with recovery!!!

Look, I'm no doctor but I am into natural/holistic type things when it comes to keeping myself well. It is now known that a vast majority of people are extremely deficient in vitamin D! This is no minor thing either. It is linked to all kinds of health problems, including autoimmune diseases, heart troubles and cancer. The major reason cited is that poeple have been scared into staying out of the sun. We need about 15 minutes of direct sunlight a day over as much of our body as possible to convert vitamin D. This is essential. With sunscreans and avoidance this isn't happening and curiously skin cancer is on the rise. In fact people who work in offices seem to have the highest incidence!! So it's not like they are sun bathing all day.

Anyway you need to get your level up. Get a little sun if possible but you'll probably need to supplement vitamin D3. It can't hurt to see if this helps your problem or even better solve it altogether. I hope this helps.
