Me and the missus are Star Trek fans, too (not wearing pointy ears or Klingon foreheads). I still remember watching the original series as a little boy. That was a real highlight for me, then.
RiverCat: Your post made me remember how often I discussed the philosophical aspects of many ST episodes with my wife and my friend. Wow, that sounds rather highbrow - but you know what I mean...
Amsterhammer: Yes, Troy's Mother was funny and embarrassing at the same time. I loved "The Inner Light" episode, too. In the end, Picard gets to keep the flute that he played in his "alternate life" IIRC...
My favorite ST series: Deep Space 9.
The first season was a little boring. More like a soap opera or crime series on a space station. But then the series really took off. When the Dominion and the Jem Hadar entered the scene it got extremely thrilling.
What I like most about DS9 are the characters. They are really different from each other. There are not only "good guys". Look at Garak or Quark or Gul Dukat for example. In the other series there was a little too much political correctness for my taste. Everybody was so honest and trustworthy. I hope I'm not hurting anybody's feelings - just my personal taste. Not that I didn't like the other series! I'm shure I watched at least 90% of the TNG and Voyager episodes...
My favorite ST movie: First contact.
Yes, I like it a little darker. Why was there never a movie with the DS9 crew?!??
My favorite episode: The "Tribbles"-crossover (DS9 characters timetravelling to visit Kirk + co. in the original "Tribbles"-episode).
Great! "Whorf, why do these other Klingons look so different from you?" - "That's a long story..."
My favorite Captain: Picard.
That guy really has style.
Favorite characters: the Holo-Doc (!), Garak, Q, Scotty, Data, Picard, Chief O'Brien, the Duras sisters , Sisco, the Borg, 7of9!
Kaplah!

P.S. 1: "Galaxy Quest" (with Tim Taylor and Sigorney Weaver) is a movie that makes me laugh again and again. Lots of funny allusions to Star Trek. If you haven't seen it...
P.S. 2: A SciFi series I really like is "Firefly". Lots of unique characters. Too bad they cancelled it after (not even) one season. It's like a Western series in space. Be warned: There are no aliens in this series.
