Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

Well done to Martin Kaymer for winning the 2010 PGA Championship. He beat Bubba Watson in a 2-way play-off. Bubba was his usual flambouyant self and kinda threw it away. Unlucky Dustin Johnson was given a 2-shot penalty for grounding his club in a hazard on the 18th, putting him out of the play-off. Well done, also, to Rory McIlroy for an excellent finish leaving him joint 2nd on -10.

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

Thanks Roy for the walk-through on Fri, it sure sounds like a lot of fun. I have never attended one live, although my dad went to the Masters one year and then marshalled a couple of times for a senior event here before he died.
Bubba did give it away. I know he said he would hit that same shot again in that circumstance, but then he would be wrong twice. Martin had a much worse lie in that rough, there was no need for him to "go for it". He needed to hit the fade being lefty into the front of the green and let it roll towards the hole, easy decision. Then he puts the real pressure back on Martin. Oh well, that's Bubba I am told.
Justin's mistake was not asking the question. I always say, the dumbest question is usually the one that does not get asked. He looked at the ground as though he had some doubt, and backed away for just a second and then readdressed. It should be more about the spirit of the rule, but golf is also a game where rules will change slightly from course to course. In this case, the course has plenty of sand in fair play, inside the ropes, and therefore the rule about "other sand" should not have been instituted, imo. Fun tournament and a great finish anyway. see ya next year in Atlanta, maybe.

it'd be nice if I could get his name right. thanks Roy.

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

Hey Tres, do yourself a favor and attend the PGA next year. The majors have a much different feel than normal tournaments. Not sure if it's the set up of the courses or the way the players treat it, but they are special. This was my third PGA having been to another one in Medinah, Illinois. I also have been to two or three U.S. Senior Opens and one U.S. Open. That U. S. Open was at Medinah also and I've never seen so many people on one golf course at one time.

Rick, even though it was a hot and humid day, once that rain started pelting us with the strong wind it did send a chill down my spine. I looked at Dawn and she had goosebumps, so she decided to go back to the car and wait for me. I wanted to see Mickelson come though the 7th and so I waited for four or five groups of golfers. By the time Mickelson showed up, I was almost dry because the wind was blowing so hard, but still could feel the chill and dampness from the rain. I should have known, living my entire life close to Lake Michigan, never to trust her and should have brought along a sweatshirt. Oh well, it's good to be 57 years of age and still learning. wink

I do congratulate Martin Kaymer for the win. He played the course at the end the way it should have been played with the wind blowing. However, I really feel for Dustin Johnson. I can't imagine that both he and his caddie never thought about being in sand. True, it didn't look like a sand trap because everyone had been standing in it, but the ball was clearly lying on sand. According to the explanation by the officials, they said because of the number and irregularity of the sand bunkers on this course, they made rule number one that if you were in sand it was considered a sand trap and not a waste bunker. Still, Dustin and his caddie's thoughts at the time were how Dustin could win the tournament rather than whether he was in a trap nor not. Hey, he battled back from blowing up in the U.S. Open, he'll battle back from this too and I expect it won't be long before his name is on a Major trophy. smile

5 years from now I'll be right back again to see the PGA unfold at this very same course. cool

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

For reasons I won't expand on, I missed the end of the tournament. The really sad thing with Dustin's blunder is that the rationale regarding grounding your club is (i believe) partially to prevent players from testing the condition of the sand before their shot. I don't believe he grounded his club to gain any advantage, but rules are rules and he obviously violated that one. To his credit, he blamed nobody but himself. I suspect in his blunder he will be more widely remembered than Kaymer when it comes to the 2010 PGA.

Dustin WAS a smidge unlucky with regards to the 18th. I was watching live on Sky Sports, and the commentators (& Butch Harman) were of the same opinion. With golf, the rules are absolute. They are black and white with NO grey areas to expoit. The local rule- with large notices displayed in the club house- is that ALL sand on the course is in-bounds and deemed bunkers, therefore hazards. Dustin backed away from that 2nd shot AFTER grounding his club, when the gallery moved letting a shaft of light appear right next to his ball. He asked the ppl to move blocking the light. At no point did it enter his mind that he was in a bunker (shudda remembered the local rule?). 10 out of 10 for the way he handled the situation afterward, but, as he said, he only had himself to blame.
Also top marks have to go to Kaymer and Watson for staying focused enough to go and complete the play-off. Must've been hard on them both. Kaymer held his nerve better, and also had the quickness of thought to change his stratergy after Bubba's fk up.
Gripping finish to the tournament, I thought.

Re: The 2010 PGA Championship…

Been just lurkin' as of late but thought i'd chime in on this one. I am an avid player, and live about a 45 min drive to Oakmont C.C. in Pittsburgh PA . I've been to the U.S. Open there twice. There surely is a different vibe at a major tournament. Back to PGA championship: On my tv I saw D.J. walk up to the ball to asess the situation. He was standing there with the sole of his club in the sand. All the sudden he raises his shoulders and picks the club up, points to the ground and asks someone a question. This is well before he clearly grounds his club once more, when he addresses the ball. What I couldnt believe was the way David Faherity was denying that it was a bunker. There was clearly a lip in the front part, that you could see in the replays of D.J. hitting the shot. When they were having the discussion in the rules trailer, they (television) were back to showing Faherity in the bunker dismissing any question that it might be a bunker. This time people were standing 3 deep in the bunker blocking the defining lip from the viewers watching at home. Obviously David Faherity didnt read the rules sheet either. Wish it woulda ended in a 4 way p.o. with D.J. and Rory in there too, but it wasnt meant to be. I was rootin for Bubba, but I couldnt have asked for a much more exciting finish.
Hit em' straight, and if not, with a little draw on it !

Tell me about the car i saw parked outside your door ? Tell me what you left me waiting two or three hours for ? Tell me why when the phone rings, baby, your up and across the floor ? Please dont keep me wondering no more.....
