Topic: Blues Jams-an oxymoron?

I suppose I've become philosophical about so many things, but why call 'em that?  Usually players say "sounds good" and I jsut say "Thanks." and I hand over the instrument cable.  It's all very civil.

Last Thursday, the next bass player came up and said "sounding good, brah..."  and I couldn't help it.  I spewed.  and he looked at me and grinned real big.  OK he said, "It was a ****ing train wreck...but that wasn't your fault."

Right I said.  When I sat down to put my axe away, the drummer that was on before me came over and apologized for not staying up there.  He's a jazz guy, which I can do.

As I'm leaving, a singer I know says to me "Call me Doc.  I got something up my sleeve."  Okay then.  "We're not gonna play "House of the Rising Sun," are we?"

He said No sir! and laughed out loud.  I'm wondering what I'm in for...

Any of you guys or gals go to jams or open mic nights?  Sometimes it is magic, but rarely so, anymore.

I'd rather work with young folks who can count to four than old burnout alcoholics who swear they're stars and don't even own a (fill in the blank)

You can count to four, RIGHT?

As in all aspects of life Jeff old buddy, some days are better than others and some days just suck. And so it is with the performance arts.  So you went to the local blues sham night and couldn't lock in with the drummer I'm guessing....it happens, you know as well as anyone here that you are getting up there and playing songs unrehearsed with muscians of all different skill levels=not easy. Don't give up, keep going as you have something to offer in your experiance and lifes times.
Blues Jam an oxymoron? Only if you get stuck up there with a moron who can't play.  tongue

Very rare we do Jams, had many bad experiences, occasionally a good one. Came up against lots of jealously from 'artists' the last one I was seconds away from putting one know it all on his **** (yes you know who you are).

Re: Blues Jams-an oxymoron?

Yeah the oxymoron deal comes in from calling them "TrueBluesJams" or "BluesOnlyOpenMicNight", etc.  They barely play music sometimes, let alone blues.

Hey Dude!  Know any Guns & Roses tunes?  How about some Chuck Barry?  or Know any Pantera?

Doc... all the tunes you know & you don't know House of the Rising Sun???    roll lol

Call it something else.

Now 4 weeks ago I wondered into the place and we played 6 cracking blues/rock tunes right in a row...guys who've never played together before.  SMOKING!

Re: Blues Jams-an oxymoron?

Hey Big Jeff, a quick story.

About 25 years or so ago I was playing in a local pub at what was called a Musicians workshop, you know the score, back line and drumkit supplied, bring axe, jump up and blast something out, anyway about half way through the evening a young 16 or 17 year old (shouldn't have even been in the pub at that age) jumped up on stage and said, "hey guys can I play a bit of blues with you, but go easy with me as I've only been playing for about ayear or so". We sort of relented and said OK for maybe one number!

Up he got, threw an old and battered looking Strat over his shoulder and proceeded to blow everyone off stage with some outstanding soulful blues/rock lead guitar work, truely amazing. After two or three numbers we got talking over a beer and a lemonade for the youngster and I asked him his name, "Brad" he replied, "Brad Trower" I said "Oh! what as in Robin Trower" , he replied "Yeah my Brother Robin"

Although he had only been playing for a year or so, what a teacher to have if you get stuck on something and want to find out the best and quickest way around the problem, i'm sure Joe would have done the same at 16 but then he had already been playing constantly for the past 11 years. The moral of the story, don't judge a book by it's cover! or a guitarist by his age!!! lol  lol

Have Fun and laugh like it's your first time! You never know you might get to like it! big_smile

Re: Blues Jams-an oxymoron?

Oh no.  Not me.  I do know that scene.

In 1972 I was working with a soul band in a high class bucket of blood in a Germantown ghetto.  The owner came over and said when y'all go on break, I want some guys to play.  Oh dammit, man.  It was our equipment but after  we took one look at these gangsters, we agreed.

Mind you, this was the days of double knits in the 'hood and hot pants and large pimp hats.  These brothers were black, like everybody but two, but wearing jeans, cowboy boots and hats and gold with long fur coats.  They cleared a swath when they walked through.  Pimps, dealers, hos and all.

Guitarist was named Snake, bassist was Hassle, drummers name was Death.  They looked kinda rough.  Snake said "I'm gonnna reset your amp."  My brother said OK and swallowed hard.  I just stood there with my mouth open.  neutral

What followed was some of the most asskickingest blues I ever heard in my young life.  3 cold blooded killers playing gutbucket, soulful, rocking blues like it was Judgement Day.  I knew about BB and Bland and even Paul Butterfield, but not this.

At one point the bassman lost his strap and he glared at me, (guess I was the brightest one in there) so I jumped up on stage and restrapped him.  Later he came to me and said "Thanks for the help."  While we were talking, a couple of people rudely interupted, trying to talk to Hassle and he glared at them.  They vanished.  Made me feel good.  I was young.

Snake said to my brother, "I put your amp back the way it was.  You like it kinda clean.  I plays out of a Silvertone head and a Standell bottom.  It's dirty enough for blues like I play."

OK then!   They were good to us (the musicians) smiling and thanking, then they put on their coats and their scowls and walked out with 3 young ladies...never saw 'em again...

Can't remember what day it is; but I remember them.  cool

Re: Blues Jams-an oxymoron?

Jeff:  I've been to quite a number of "blues jams" in/near my local area, which is about an hour north of The Nation's Capital.  At least two of them ran weekly for several years, with a house band, PA/backline provided, and were, for the most part, real blues.  Never a Pantera song or even Guns 'N Roses, though Cream would creep in periodically.

As the illustrious host of the first above-mentioned jam used to say "Sometimes it's magic....and sometimes it's tragic!   I played with a lot of people of all ability levels, most of whom were friendly, approachable, and didn't have a 'tude.   There was a sign-up matrix which to some degree allowed you to create a 3-song set with some people that you could rely on to fully support it, though sometimes you got stuck with some duds.

Made some good friends and eventually, either directly or by circumstances, met up with my current bandmates.  As a matter of fact, it got to be a routine more for the social aspect of it than even the music.  I miss those jams, but they are gone, for the most part.

Would love to hook up a jam if I ever get down to your neck of the woods, I'm jealous that you and Ken and Justin got to hang out and play together...someday.

Re: Blues Jams-an oxymoron?

Carl YES!

I watched Crossroads last night at the theatre.  What I kept thinking over and over was how the true greats on guitar just lock rhythm chops down.  Robert Cray playes some syncopated stuff.  Only guitar in the band.  Eric Clapton turns that overplayed "Ishot the sheriff" into a funk reggae magic.  He plays the rhythm guitar!!!  Just listen to it.

and I mean LOCKITINTHEPOCKET.  Not strutting or posturing; an integral important component of the band... THE SOUND.
Vince Gill!  Derek, Susan, Warren...on and on.

Once my brother and I got on stage by accident with a blues guy who shall remain nameless for now, and it was all about the groove.  I mean bubbling and popping, perculating, soulfu blues, chicken and barbeecue hot sauce.  No roar or attitude until the time came for a solo...and then  cool pure ROCK Scorched earth and then gasp for air.

I don't fit. It's OK.  Never have.

BTW I like Susan T and Sheryl C in skirts and heels.  I wish I could sing with that much balls.
