Topic: GAS Cured?

had to share this with you guys here. My wife has been bored of me for the last 2 years going on and on and on and on about getting one of these. Today I finally got my dream guitar. A PRS David Grissom Signature. Finished in tobacco sunburst with a 10 top and the new type bird inlays. This is the best guitar I have played and my guitar acquisition syndrome has been cured. Effects & Amp acquisition syndrome still has some issues though. Dream guitar done, now for the amp. Too many to choose from. I've never had an amp jump at me the way this guitar did when i first seen it reviewed in guitarist magazine.

Where to start?

Re: GAS Cured?

GAS is a chronic disease. It can go into remission for a while; but  you  are stuck with it for life. See, the orginal Guitar Acquisition Syndrome; turns into the much more serious Gear Aquisition Syndrome to which the original GAS becomes a chronic side effect.

I find it best to embrase the disease.

Re: GAS Cured?

A DGT is a seriously amazing guitar.  It's basically a McCarty Trem on steriods!  Congrats dude, now go get that amp of your dreams, you'll be so glad you did.  Mine was a 100w Plexi and now that I have one there's no going back!  big_smile

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: GAS Cured?

I myself just bought a PRS and love it to death.

I think you shouldn't trust our recommendations on an amp. They are all so different, but there is ONE out there for you.

I currently own:
Rivera R55-12(best of both marshall and fender worlds)
Fender (I own a blues jr, and am having it  Bill M modded)

Here is a list of ones I'ved liked or previously owned: (in order of how much I liked them)
Sovtek Mig 50 (friend owned, like a twin reverb on roids)
Metro Amps JTM45 (friend owned - JTM45 spot on!)
Budda (never owned any, but played them love the balls!)
Peavey Classic Tweed (owned and sold - found better)
Mesa Boogie Studio 12 tube combo (friends own, never justified cost)
Marshalls JCM 800 (great dirt, one channel though)
Fender HRD - (too bright clean)
Line6 Flextone II (friend owned, these 'can' fool you, but not quite "there")
VOX Valvetronix (just ok in my opinion)
Mesa Booge triple rectifier (triple rectum-hinder - too heavy)
Peavey 5150 (owned and sold - too heavy)
Soldano (good dirt, too expensive for one channel)

So in order of how much I liked them, that has been my experience. Amps I've never played I didn't list. Another thing I'm finding is that speakers make a bigger difference than I thought.

Great list. I've been keeping an eye out for some of them. There is a long term review of a deluxe reverb reissue in guitarist magazine over the next few months and the guy doing the review made a good point. He said with minimum controls there wasn't the notion of a better sound hiding in amongst the controls. I think thats why I have been so happy with the class 5 for the last 4 or so months. Not really much to play with. I am a home player mainly so don't need anything with serious wattage. The cornell plexi 7 looks good. A better class 5 maybe? or perhaps one of the blackstar artisan amps.

Re: GAS Cured?

Congrats on the axe!! Pics? I too found salvation in my newly aquired R7 Goldtop. My GAS was cured for about a week...then I start looking at amps again...or maybe a new pedal...here we go again...

Gits: '03 Gibson Historic R7 Goldtop, '06 Gibson R8 Plaintop, MIJ '62 RI Strat,  and others...
Amps: '99 Marshall 1987x Plexi RI, 1969 Fender Super Reverb

As a fellow DGT owner(and unnoficial president of the DGT club on Birds and Moons) and as a Bonamassa owner, I can tell you for sure that the Bogner Shiva is an amp that can take you most anywhere you want to go, and do it better than most other amps out there...

With that statement out of the way, let your EARS decide.  Who's tone do you like and maybe want to approach?  That can help us, help you...

Re: GAS Cured?

Ha, your buyig of guitars are over....very funny....it never ends, break the bad news to your wife, just done for a moment and moments can go by fast.

I remember saying that about a few years ago, now I could open a botique guitar shop.

Enjoy your beautiful purchase!!!!!! a bit envious I might say, all I have to look forward to this week is a Pete Cornish cable being sent to me from UK or new pedalboard ordered.....damn, nice guitar you got!!!!!

Re: GAS Cured?

Congrats!!
If you can still feed the kitty and you come across something that tweaks your fancy, then by all means go for it. As others have said and will continue to tell you, G.A.S. is incurable. It's a horribly enjoyable disease. Have fun!

Re: GAS Cured?

... no THIS is the last guitar I'll ever get.

,......NOW this is the last guitar I'll EVER need.

...............OK, this is the last guitar to complete my COLLECTION.

.....................I think this guitar would be a good beater for around the campfire because my other guitars are too nice... lol

..........................yes but I needed a 335 as they sound SO different

.............................I know I don't really need it, but all my other strats have only got 21 frets

..................................ah, but every collection should have a Floyd Rose guitar

......................................no, no. I'm not going to really use it- it's an investment

...........................................how on earth to you expect me to play country licks without a Tele?

...........................................(or in my case) look, the Triangle Muff is TOTALLY different to the Ram's Head. And I need the Cornish P2 as it's much more robust.

I have honestly said that to my other half. It fell on deaf ears.

I explained it as an Em/Bm octave thing. The ears were still deaf.

I may just have to check out the Shiva. I like the idea of the blackstar s1 45 with the power reduction thing. I am really looking for a nice smooth Marshall plexi type sound. I'm getting close with the class 5 and ocd & fulldrive. Just looking for that last 10%.

Do youself a favor and check out the Fargen Mini Plex if you ever desire a low wattage Plexi amp in a small package.  Ben Fargen is a great builder and that amp is the closest I've ever been to a true plexi tone at low volumes.  VERY smooth and VERY warm.  I was extremely impressed and keep in mind this was all with a Tele.  Pretty warm even with a bright guitar like that.

I gotta have a les paul and a strat that are both tuned down a half step, so I dont have to retune!  wink

Oh yes - I forgot.

.....................I need THAT ONE too because I have to have a guitar set up for slide. Better make it 2. One for standard and one for open tuning.
