I can't remember the last time I bought a "new" album from a rock band.  Do they still exist? Even Tom Petty, who is one of the few old-school rock bands, says his new album is more "blues"-will be interesting to hear when it comes out.  It seems so many of the lines are blurred these days about genres.  I was never one to buy something just because it was supposed to be a particular type of music.  I've learned about more good music from this place than I ever learned from radio or tv.  I hate giving music labels as to type - if it's good I'll listen/buy it.  I stopped listening to my area's "rock" stations because I disliked so much of what I was hearing, couldn't even tell you the names of the bands they were playing the stuff was so bad.  Now it's usually "classic" rock or the ipod in the car.  Tried Sirius when my car was new and it was free - couldn't get into it - seemed like the same stuff over and over, just on a longer loop.  ChrisM - I like what you said about country music sounding like 70s soft rock - most of the best country stuff came from way back (my husband loves country music  hmm  so I get to hear it a lot, and the new stuff isn't "country", although I do like some of it).  I am getting old - I miss the 60's/70's stuff.  Nothing stays the same, but change is not always a good thing.  Sorry for the ramble, and if this is off topic I apologize, but I guess this sort of hit a nerve with me.

Sandy

Sandy,

Rock is not dead, you just have to investigate.  Same thing with "Country".  I agree that the stuff coming out of Nashville these days is nothing more than what they used to call soft rock with a steel guitar thrown in for legitimacy.  No, the real deal is coming out of Texas and Oklahoma and they call it Red Dirt Country.  Listen to Stoney LaRue and Jason Boland for examples.  Boland just this week released a new live album and covered "Tulsa Time" fabulously.
Reverand Paul recently mentioned a new rock band called  Jonathan Tyler that's quite good.

Back to country, here's some recent stuff that I like....

The Good   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4peL__Q08zQ

The Bad     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RH5UEwO5us

There is no ugly   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JAXNlOwleU
Found this extra Jason Boland song, "Comal County Blue" with just JB and a violinist.  In the living room country that gives me chills.

I was waiting for an appt yesterday and flipping through Time magazine.  Saw this article and thought of your thread.  Headline:  "Punks Take Broadway.  Green Day's American Idiot marks a new milestone in rock's conquest of the Great White Way."   That alone 'bout sums it up.

The killer, to me, was the first sentence:  "Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer and lyricist for the punck-rock band Green Day, claims he was a big fan of show tunes while growing up near Oakland, CA..."  Later in the same paragraph they say that Rock purists may see it as a sign that the California punk trio is getting soft.

Soft?  OK, I really shouldn't opine 'cuz I know nothing about Green Day except a very few songs I've heard while hitting "scan" on my radio, but c'mon?  First of all, I wouldn't consider them punk - at least not the songs on the "approved" airways list.  Second, I think all rock purists would take it as a sign that most "rock" ain't rock anymore.  Just like county music is now more similar to 70s soft rock.  What gives?

I wanna go back to the 60s/70s.  I must be getting old.   sad

I saw Green Day live last December and it was one of the best shows I have ever been to (I am 45 years old so I have seen my fair share). I was not expecting much and prior to the gig was not a huge fan of the band but they blew me away. A two hour 45 minute show which is pretty rare these days.

Not so sure about the Broadway show, but there last two albums have got the Grammy for best Rock album, so i have to disagree about having them in with the 'Bad Rock Bands' thread  smile

Just thought of another band i just couldn't listen to....

A UK 80's band . Dexy's Midnight Runners -  Dreadful IMO!
They had a top 10 hit - Come on Eileen - Just turns me cold whenever i hear it.
Edit: More a pop band, than a rock band..... but still!!

I thought of that one too, a real one hit wonder. However, it is a very catchy tune and the violin is great. don't know that they claimed to rock all that much, not in those outfits, but that was pretty much the end of their line.
Yeah, there was a lot of bad 80s music, what are the younguns complaining about? one of the best examples might be Huey Lewis and the News, but don't leave out Hall & Oates. yikes, music for the masses, like lemmings to the sea they run!

Re: Bad rock bands !!!

Had to show you this...

Know how they say be careful what you wish for?  Well, maybe I shouldn't have wished I could go back to the 60s/70s, LOL.  Check out the summer concert line-up in the Baltimore, MD area:  http://www.thebayonline.com/concerts/.  Now, I'm not complaining 'bout all these bands (I'm personally gonna go see some of them), but I am wondering WHAT YEAR IS THIS?

Oh, I see Hall & Oates is playing, in case that person above wants to go!   tongue

Ann & Nancy want me...Deb Harry, too.  FWIW... I like Huey Lewis and Hall & Oates.  Darryl kicked in the 70s.

about U2, but must defend their live performances. I saw them in New Orleans on the Popmart tour, they did rock the house, and to this day it is one of the best concerts I have ever seen. I am prepared to take the heat on this, however I own none of their music. I would like to have Joshua Tree, only for Bullet The Blue Sky. and yes, for the most part Edges guitar work sucks, but not so much on this tune

I would agree with you in that it is so easy to knock the biggest, most successful band but until you have seen first hand what they can do in a stadium gig you cannot judge; they certainly rock! - And The Edge is a much misunderstood guitar god IMHO. Watch the outtakes on the "it might get loud" film to see him jamming with Jimmy Page, - he can rock when he wants.

As for new rock bands, - there are plenty out there you just have to open your mind a bit and be prepared to go looking for them rather than wait... Biffy Clyro, - just go buy their latest album guys, take my word for it. And then rock has come into other streams of music; Pendulum, - have a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5wlU7RQHAU - tell me that number does not rock and you would not want to be in the mosh pit at 1min10?

Biggest underrated rocker:

Jimmy Barnes (v big in Australia mostly unknown elsewhere). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwIdbN1QW24 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giCmURBT … eature=fvw

S'OK.  I'm thinking about going to see Carole King & James Taylor.  That should make for some groans from the crowd.  And I'll really put myself out here on a limb.  Shoot me.  I like The Toadies.  OK, lemme rephrase that.  I REALLY like The Toadies!

Chris - Your stock's rising in my book.  I'm with Jeff too on the Huey Lewis, Hall & Oates mention.
Carole King is near the top of the singer/songwriter category, but sadly her voice has weakened with age.  James Taylor though is like a fine wine - he  just sounds better with the years.  I'm sure you'll enjoy the show.
About Huey I just recently learned it's him on harp playing with Sammy Hagar and Roy Rogers on "Little White Lie."

A good friend from here in Benicia, Stef Burns has been Huey's guitarist for about the past ten years now. A nice steady gig to pay the mortgage when he's not playing in Italy with Vasco Rossi or his own Rock/Fusion band. He's a pretty versatile player having played with Alice Cooper, Sheila E.(Latin Salsa), Y&T(Metal), even Pablo Cruise many years ago. Bottom line, Huey still draws 'em. My girlfriend is fired up to see the Carole King/James Taylor show with her cousins, girls night out & sing-a-long no doubt.

OK, I will man up and say they did have some musically redeeming qualities. the truth is that I actually bought an album of each of theirs, because my wife at that time really liked both. consequently, became a little toasted around the edges from listening too much. the other fact is that radio stations in Houston in the early 80s were just wearing out both of them.
