Joe played a couple of Fenders on Black Rock.  But he's explained why he prefers Gibsons.  He likes tones that wrap around your head, not ice-picks it.

So true, however the Stratocaster can get that big vocal tone as well.  It just takes SO MUCH WORK!  mad   I've recently revisited a lot of Eric Johnson's stuff and he makes a Strat sound fatter than most people's Gibson guitars.  I almost completely gave up on the Stratocaster until I started listening to EJ again.  His "100lb Violin" tone off the "Live from Anahiem" DVD is truely inspiring to me and don't get me started on his Hendrix-y/fuzz sound.  Dare I say he does Hendrix better than Hendrix???  yikes  yikes  yikes

Back to Joe though...check out the youtube vid of Joe playing "Django" on a custom shop sunburst Strat...sounds nearly identical to his LP versions.  A decent amount of "You and Me" was Fenders/Gigliottis if I'm not mistaken.  I don't think Joe can make a guitar sound icepicky!

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

His own worst critic.

Re: Joe's going back to the fender strat !!!

I've been hanging around this forum for a while and thats the main reason I went down the Joe road. Japanese tokai love rock through a marshall class 5 to get joe tones. However, I have been listening to a lot of strat guys and decided it was time to get one that I liked. I got a good deal on a kenny wayne shepherd strat on ebay. Unfortunately it is the white one with the celtic cross. The neck on these guitars are great. I think I got lucky and got one with a good fret job. Last night I stripped all the parts from the body and installed everything on a just starting to age 62 reissue sunburst. WoW!
