Topic: Vinyl anyone?

I had this REAL itch to get back into buying vinyl albums.

I saw Joe is selling his albums on vinyl, and Best Buy has started selling vinyl again...

I just LOVED the tactile sensation of holding a record in my hands and being able to read the lyrics and credits without squinting - and I'm only 30. The experience of listening to music was much more than it is just simply listening to it on your computer.

Does anyone else collect vinyl albums? Where are the hotspots to buy good ones?

Re: Vinyl anyone?

Strange, I'm just getting into vinyl as well (I can't say again, I'm only 15 wink) Right now I'm trying to hunt down a new needle/cartridge for the one we have. I've got the Best of Cream LP, Band of Gypsies, and Clapton's Just One Night. I love the sound quality smile Lol, I'll throw this out there, since I haven't found anything: Anybody know what needle/cartridge I should get for the Magnavox FCD-196? Anyways, I too would love to know some good places to buy vinyls smile There are a ton at our local flea-market that occurs monthly, so if you haven't checked at one of those, that's a good start smile

Re: Vinyl anyone?

I've got 'em, course I have. Loads of them, hundreds in fact as I am sure many others my age and younger on here will have.

Only half what it should be as my less than enlightened mother took it upon herself to flog almost half of them whilst I was away from home somewhere. Our relationship still bears the scars to this day.

I know what you mean about the touching, feeling...and reading sensation. Huge gatefold jobs with acres of pictures.

I used to spend lietrally DAYS in my local record store just going through everything, so much so I began working there.

He started importing lots of stuff from the US so I have rare singles by ELP on Cotillion and other daft stuff like that. I've got one by Grand Funk Railroad where the B-side is 33rpm.

But despite all that and having a wonderful deck to play them on, I just detest getting up everything 20 minutes or so to change them over.

I will concede though that when I take the time and trouble to do it, the listening experience takes me to another place, where I was younger, with longer hair and with so much time in front of me to make the mistakes that I eventually made.

We don't have a thread for it yet but if there was one for "the latest vinyl you've listened to it would be Focus 'Moving Waves'. I'm going to try and remember or find out which was the last piece of vinyl I ever bought. That should date me properly. Now where's my 'Lamb lies down on Broadway...........'

Like hansamike, i'm the proud owner of hundreds. There are places in London who deal. I've noticed, downstairs at HMV have started to stock Vinyl again.
As yet, i don't own any of Joe's music on vinyl

Whoa!  Not only is a record player, it's a radio, and not just a radio, it's AM and shortwave for picking up broadcasts arouns the world!   Wonder how good it all functions?   I like seeing stuff like this Nick.  They don't mention it's year of manufacture.  I'm guessing mid 1950's?

Re: Vinyl anyone?

turntable was replaced at some point with a Voice of Music turntable.  The knobs are really scratchy, and it smells as if it was in a smoker's home. Got some contact cleaner for that. Just ordered new needle.

Any ideas for getting rid of the smell? I'm thinking Pledge inside and out?

Re: Vinyl anyone?

- I think Black rock album cover would look great on a 12"x12" format, - here is an interesting piece on Storm Thorgerson:

I can still get a better depth of sound out of my old Duel deck and Rotel amp that I can my Arcam cd player

I think Pledge much later on.  My recommendations would be, with careful attention to whether any of these can damage the surface, hydrogen peroxide, trisodium phosphate solution, baking soda, and there is a product line called Vamoose that removes tar and nicotine.  Once cleared I would treat the wood with Scott's Liguid Gold (a couple times a year) and THEN Pledge as needed for attractiveness.  Scott's & Pledge (if you are wary of the other things) work together well.  I've used Scotts's for guitars also.  Good Luck.

Re: Vinyl anyone?

A shot of WD40 after a spray of contact cleaner should fix the scratchy pots. If they are too far gone, replacements can be found online at one of the large parts houses such as Mauser. I've restored vintage units such as you described. If you have the soldering skills, all the electrolytic capacitors should be replaced as well. The photo has been removed but it sounds like a mid to late 50's model.

In what? Something to play it on? (Asked as a serious question, not joking or anything)
Hey, what if they DO put it out and make a colored disc out of it?  Like, hm, maybe black (ok now I am)....and make one a GOLDEN Black Rock LP as a prize!!!! (Could go either way as to whether I am serious or joking  wink )
