Topic: When Your Having a Bad Day.......

Ever have one of those days at band practice or a live performance when you are a little tired and you feel like you have a little concrete on your fingers? You know, when the energy level is just not there and you are fighting your guitar to get something going. I find my rig usually sounds like crap on these type days also  even though I haven't changed anything.  How do you pull out of the funk and get something going, especially at a live performance?  Thanks in advance for the tips!

This is easy...

Just remember that your worst day playing guitar is better than your best day flipping burgers or doing what ever bullshit job you do to pay your bills.

Hoosier

I believe Keith Richards had a similar problem and had his own way of getting over it. You'll have to ask him, but I believe it's less than legal ;-)

I've found that taking a nap, or just going and doing something else for a while really helps. If nothing else, a good night's sleep does it perfectly smile

I always hook up my ipod to my head phones and jam along to some of my favorite songs to get the energy level up before a set.  If you are coming into town off a long trip or are just in a funk, I like to play along to Hendrix's Voodoo Child or Testify by SRV to get the blood flowing.  And a half a dozen Coors Lights help the process too..... smile

Re: When Your Having a Bad Day.......

Thanks for the good replies. But, look at it from this angle:  The show has started, you have played a few songs and a couple solos and unfortunately you are falling a little flat.  How do you pull yourself out of the funk when you are in the heat of the moment.  You need to get it going for the benefit of your audience and your band mates.  Do you work on your concentration? Slow your playing down and work on single notes instead of fast licks and runs? A cold beer? Some caffiene? (I think Jeff Beck was drinking Red Bull in the last DVD I watched!)  How do you light a fire and give a good performance when you are struggling to get it going part of the way through your show?

Re: When Your Having a Bad Day.......

Everybody has an off night every once in a great while. The best thing to do if you should find yourself in this situation is to number one, RELAX, get smaller, get in the mix, and when taking a solo keep it simple and tasty, after a couple of songs you'll probablly be where you want to be. If this dosen't help or happens often, you need more practice or a different situation.

Re: When Your Having a Bad Day.......

i've just had one of those experiences tonight. rehershal was a little strained, everyone's been under a bit of stress at work/home etc. i spent 2 hours at the gym today (first time, gotta get skinny again lol) and felt drained and my fingers felt really tight and unresponsive. playing rythym and riffs was ok, but my lead work was garbage. kept slipping off strings, fumbling for notes. yesterday in the guitar shop, i was playing really well, nice and fluid. even got a compliment on how good my homage to john mayer was  smile
yet tonight, i was really ashamed of myself, couldn't even get a nice sound going. my cleans sounded fine, but i made the mistake of bringing my MXR dist + instead of my TS9. i felt i was playing thru an AM radio.
oh for the love of a beer and some forum time.

Re: When Your Having a Bad Day.......

Well, I found a few beers, a glass of wine, or some bourbon will help loosen up on those stiff days.  Also, even though it seems counter intuitive, I think most players get stuck in their styles, which increases the frustration of a perceived lackluster performance, so my suggestion is to go for some gonzo licks, and try to think of different ways of making some good noise.  I for one get super frustrated if I cannot land a run or a lick perfectly like I have done countless times;  when that happens I just start really goofing off and thinking "outside" and try to play things that are more dissonant, more angular.  Also, another suggestion I have is to constantly listen to a variety of music.  Since I started that a few years back, i feel that the tough days are fewer and further between.

Re: When Your Having a Bad Day.......

Hmmm, I get those days now and again.. Usually because of stupid coursework, or something thats really got me down,,, And when Im not playing too well, I tend to get real blue and depressed. If this is during a performance, and somethings been upsetting me, just think about it while you play,, not only will it gradually make you feel better than you did... But playing when youre upset just helps you even more,, I guess thats one of my many thoughts towards the blues, its about throwing back what gets you down, right in its face, and making yourself feel better with one of God's greatests gifts,,, music. If I'm offstage, then just listening to another artist you dont usually hear enough, and learn a song or two of theirs,,, even just a lick, can make me feel a little satisfied... Trust me,, when things aren't right, guitar is ALWAYS the answer, even if that means having a little time off from it!  lol

Re: When Your Having a Bad Day.......

When I had a band in Green Bay, we invited a bongo player to all of our gigs. He was sort of a hippy, and my drummer liked him because he had the best greens. He brought a cool vibe to our modern rock songs though, and a really nice guy. Anyways, before a show, he'd burn white sage leaves. The smoke would go around his bongos and we asked him about it. He mentioned it cleansed all the spirits and the bad vibes so we would do a good show. And apparently we never "felt" like we had a bad show.

Nowadays...
When I can't get into what I'm playing, I change what I listen to.

We as guitar players are the sum of who we like + ourselves.

I get into a rut, then I change who I'm listening to.
I could go from Foo Fighters and Joe Bonamassa to Kiss and Ozzy Osbourne or John Mayer and Scott H. Biram... Led Zeppelin & ZZ Top, etc.

I usually get a charge or a new outlook on playing whenever I hear something 'fresh' in something I've already listened to 10,000 times. You hear nuances in these songs and it comes at you from a new direction.

My worst days playing are days when I am most uninspired.

Re: When Your Having a Bad Day.......

OK I have had this problem a lot, sometimes I even get in my head and start telling myself I suck, but here is what I do to get out of the funk.

1. I make sure I have my parts down cold - the better prepared I am the better I play
1. a Warm up before hand if you can even if you have to go outside with a guitar do it if you need to
2. Wash my hands in warm water before every gig -sounds funny but if my fingers are cold I play like **##, try it it works
3. Drink one red bull before I go on stage so it kicks in while I am up there, during the show is no good if you have a short set try a half hour before
4. I don't drink that often but if things are real bad I will do a shot to loose up
5. I have a few go-to repeater licks I can play in my sleep - they sound awsome and are easy to play and get me moving
6. Try and spot a hot girl or (guy if that is your thing) and pretend your playing just for them, showing off a bit will change your energy real quick, now that I am married my wife comes to most of my shows and its still fun to show off for her - and she knows when I do it to which is funny in itself

Hope that helps, keep your head up everyone has bad days even Joe.....

Well Maybe not Joe! HA

I second this. Cold hands really screw with my playing as well!

The voice of experience.  Can any one of you count to four?  Exercise?  Excellent!  Warm clean hands? Real Good!
Does your playing improve the song?  or just noodling?  Wanking? (gasp)

I have gone on stage amped from Bull or cafe and speed up tunes and overplay.  I have also been too high (years ago) and been sloppy on my timing.  CRITICAL!  or just phoned it in.

Yeah Jack.  Get in the mix.  I know what that means.  The song is the most important.  If the lil goils are shaking their butts, heh heh
