Topic: Oklahoma City March 26th

Tomorrow Joe will be playing the crown jewel of venues in Oklahoma City. I have seen before the renovation Tull, Yes, Heart, Dead, Mountain, GFR, Eagles, Jackson Browne, Steve Miller, Trapeze, Sabbath, Savoy Brown,SRV, Beach Boys to name a few. This was the premier Rock venue in OKC in the 60's. 70's 80's and 90's then it was renovated 100 million dollars to totally gut and reconfigure. Dropped the capacity for 4,500 to 2,000 intimate seats with Loggia boxes.

Joe Bonamassa is going to recapture those moments for me tomorrow night when he takes the stage.

When I first saw Joe in 2002 and later met him in 2003 I told him that is what he reminded me of. The kinds of acts I used to go see at the Civic Center that shaped my musical tastes. I convinced his manager Roy to allow me to bring him in to OKC in 2003 and we have building to this moment ever since. I knew it would happen some day. Well tomorrow is that day.

That is an awesome looking venue Jim.  You have worked really hard in promoting Joe over the years and I hope that tomorrow will exceed all your expectations!  Have fun...

Re: Oklahoma City March 26th

Just a quick note more to come. Oklahoma City loves Joe. This will be one of those shows that will be legendary in this town. Those that were there knew they saw something special in a special venue on a special night. I have seen 100+ shows. There have been 2 that I consider perfect in my mind. This one was number 3.

Re: Oklahoma City March 26th

hey guys!   big_smile

I was at the show last night,  and was BLOWN AWAY!

I heard Joe on the Sunday Night Blues Cruise on 107.7 years ago when they played
"If Heartaches Were Nichols", and always liked that song, so that's what spurred me to get tickets for my Dad and I..  and so glad I did!!

His ability to transition between so many different styles are phenomenal!
and his ability to play so much!  ..practically NON-STOP FOR TWO HOURS!!..  WOW!!

..but since I'm so unfamiliar with his material, is there somewhere I could find a set list from the show?

thanks,

Re: Oklahoma City March 26th

Well Roadshow has already posted the unbelievable set list...It seemed that Joe and the band exhibited great energy on every single one of the songs...

This was a big night for Sharon and I...Sharon and I travelled from Dayton to see the show with my brother, sister-in-law, 3 nieces and our great grand neice who all live in Oklahoma...Yep, 3 generations of Bonamassa fans...A special thanks to Jim Moody for his hospitality...We were able to talk to Joe, get some autographs and some great photos thanks to Jim...

Also congratulations to Jim for getting a nice shout out from Joe during the show...

I would guess 2,000+ fans who warmly welcomed the way Joe weaved his way through so many different styles during the songs in this setlist...It seemed to me that Joe's diversity has flourished to the point that every song now seems to be a stand alone as to style...

According to our memory, this was our 17th time we've seen Joe and band...We have now seen him in Dayton, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, Covington, KY, RAH and now OKC...Like so many of us say when we do a review of a show, "We have never seen Joe perform any better!" He definately seems to raise the bar on every leg of his tours. He was flawless again last night and his voice has never sounded better...

I found that my favorite songs changed a bit at this show...

If Heartaches Were Nickels - Joe did the best rendition of this song that I have ever heard...He got a standing O from me very early...This song is absolutly beautiful and Joe really put his heart into it...

Lonesome Road Blues - Absolutely rocked after a beautiful version of Sloe Gin...

Happier Times - Emotional and beautiful...and can Bogie play the drums any better than he does in this song?...

Blue and Evil, 3 Times a Fool and Bird On A Wire - Joe seemed to really like playing his new material from Black Rock...And really appreciated the responses that he got from the audience...His biggest smiles and satisfaction seemed to come after he completed these 3 new songs...

Blues Deluxe - Trademark Joe...And it keeps getting better!...

Young Man Blues - Being a big THE WHO fan, I was dying to see how Joe would cover this song...He absolutely killed it...I wish Pete Townsend could see Joe play this one...

Woke Up Dreaming - Still another version with new twists...Can anyone play an accoustic guitar this fast and this flawlessly?...We all got a "shhh" during one of the quieter and more intricate part of the song...But, it seemed to come at a new section of the guitar playing...

Bird On A Wire - I came away as this being my favorite song of the night...Joe voice is absolutely beautiful during this song...And the way the crew made the lights change, made it almost surreal to me...Beautiful, beautiful song and a great 1st song in the encore...

OK...everybody stand up and lets close things out with Just Got Paid...Bogie again was on fire...

Finally, I would like to commend the light crew...The lights were fabulous and seemed to me to be better than the past...The lights changed up with every song and added to the diversity of Joe's setlist...

Joe, Bogie, Rick and Carmine...Thanks again for more memories...Your fans love the way that you guys give 300%+ at each one of the stops on your tours...

Thanks also for making this such a great day for my family...

We'll see you again on May 2nd at the Victoria...

Re: Oklahoma City March 26th

A lot has happened in the last 18 months to Joe’s career. It was evident last night just how much it has impacted his popularity. 18 months ago we had 750 at our city’s smallest theatre. Last night 1,500 at the Civic Center Music Hall. I would like to say it is because of all my hard work but I know I played a small role in last nights success because this is happening across the country right now.

This is the culmination of the work Joe has been doing for the last 20 years. To me it is just the beginning of where Joe will be in another 18 months. The things that I see that are different than all the other shows I have seen over the years is his ability to capture the audience in a room of that size. Sure I have seen him totally tear up a club and the small theatre but since the Royal Albert Hall showed his ability to capture a large room’s undivided attention I got to see him do it again at our towns Royal Albert Hall.

The set was not a lot different but the intensity level has stepped up since RAH. The set is more rocking but with the pace changes that he always puts into the sets with the culmination of JGP as the final song getting the crowd back on their feet and absolutely charged up as they exit the theatre. I happened to be in the lobby when the show let out and since I had many first timers finally make it out to the show I was bombarded with comments like “Amazing”, “ The best show of any genre I have seen.” That guy can play anything “ “ Why have I not heard of him before” I saw many of the same faces that have supported Joe in Oklahoma for the last several years but I know this crowd was full of new fans.

The venue staff had never heard of him, nothing new there but he left them in shock and awe as usual. The is the home of the Nutcracker Suite, the Symphony, and most recently Legally Blonde. Well Joe had them hoping for a week long run of Joe shows some where down the road. I think they would work the next one for free. The geriatric ushers had a little to get used to like cameras coming out of pockets and purses in such a flurry that they were overwhelmed and had to give up enforcing the no photo policy of the hall. They hadn’t gotten the memo on Joe’s policy.

Like I said in my first post on this show’s topic this venue has had a long list of legendary performances and this was another in its storied history. I think Joe has found a new home in OKC and paved the way for other artists to again fill the hall with not only Bach but Rock and Blues too.

Re: Oklahoma City March 26th

Welcome Newbies and thanks for sharing your experiences! Joe B., You forgot to add Hagerstown Maryland to your list  big_smile

Big Daddy Jim. I feel ya! You knew Joe was special long ago and helped stoke the early fires. Now a big show in your town. You must have felt proud. And, you deserve it!! Thanks for the write up. Cathy

Re: Oklahoma City March 26th

Hi all, this is my first post here so please bear with me as I try to organize my thoughts! This was my second Joe show having attended his last OK gig at Rose State College in MWC (that’s Midwest City for you non-Okies) two albums ago in the fall of 2008. I was blown away then (funny how “blown away” seems to be the most popular phrase people use to describe their first experience of a JB concert!) and I’ve been a fan ever since. I enjoy many different types of music but I’m not a musical person myself in that I don’t play any instrument, haven’t attended many concerts and, even now, probably couldn’t tell you the difference between a Gibson, a Les Paul and a Flying V! However, I’m really proud to say that I kinda discovered JB for myself (kinda) and, if you don’t mind, and seeing as how I’m new here, let me tell you how that came to pass.

You see, I first heard the name “Joe Bonamassa” being touted in glowing terms on one of our local classic rock stations in 2007 in anticipation of an upcoming event of his and, while I didn’t know who this guy was or even what kind of music he played, for some reason the name stuck in my head. Fast forward one year to 2008 and Carlos Santana (who I DO know) is coming to town to play the Ford Center. My teenaged son and his best friend are learning to play guitar together and, since the friend’s dad was supposed to be getting tickets for us to all see Santana together, I wanted to reciprocate in kind. So, I started scanning local theaters online to see who else in the rock guitar arena might be coming our way and, lo and behold, there’s this name again, Joe Bonamassa. Who IS this person and what does he play, I asked myself? A quick Google search led to my first Joe youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNGfD6i7ckQ) and here’s this slightly overweight, sweaty, kind geeky looking guy with a guitar singing some song I’ve never heard before that's slow but seems to be building to some kind of climax and then  …. as all of you who know and love Sloe Gin are well aware, Joe peals off into this soaring guitar solo that was so amazingly beautiful that it brought tears to my eyes and I was instantaneously sold! Buying four tickets to that JB concert in MWC was probably the easiest (and most spontaneous!) thing that I’ve done in a very long time and boy, did Joe and the band ever deliver!

Anyway, I was at the concert at the Civic Center Music Hall last night with my son and two of his friends and we had some great seats in the pit orchestra section. And once again, Joe Bonamassa tore up the joint! The songs and the energy with which they were delivered were all fantastic and my personal favorites were Blues Deluxe (what passion!), Slow Gin, Young Man Blues, Woke Up Dreaming (which earned Joe a standing ovation!), and the double encore of the slightly country, Bird on a Wire (quickly becoming my favorite song on the Black Rock album), and the rousing Just Got Paid. The only slight downer of the evening for me had to do with the Civic Center ushers who, even as Joe walked on stage promptly at 8:00, started warning people about taking pictures (even with their cell phone cameras). I’d read Joe's photo policy a few times and brought along my point-and-shoot Canon PowerShot (even changed the batteries the night before!) with the hope of getting a few decent pics and so it was a bit disappointing, especially since I found myself in a prime position to be able to do so. However, the good thing is that the ushers eventually eased up on the restrictions (or gave up altogether) and I managed to get a few nice pics of Joe, especially during his encore. I’ll post these soon on the photo thread for all to see.

Overall, this was another fantastic performance by Smokin’ Joe Bonamassa and I’ve just made the spontaneous decision to be sure to purchase more than four tickets when next he performs in Oklahoma City! smile
