Topic: Pain and Sorrow

How can we get Joe to add Pain and Sorrow to his playlist? This has always been my favorite tune. My 7 year old daughter does a great air guitar version on her Barbie quitar. She will be seeing Joe at the Hagarstown Blues Festival on June 8th. It's her first concert and she loves Joe Bonamassa. It's going to be a great suprise birthday gift. The only thing that could make it complete is for Joe to do Pain and Sorrow.

Re: Pain and Sorrow

I think the new lineup has their setlist pretty complete... they may not have even practiced Pain and Sorrow, but only the band knows for sure. I've never seen Joe play Pain and Sorrow live, it would be amazing if he did!! Didn't he play it live a couple of times last year? I can't remember... all I know is I've never seen it.

Your daughter will LOVE seeing Joe!  I just took all of my kids (ages 10, 7, and 5) to see him a few weeks ago at the Raue Theater and they had a great time- they are all huge fans of his and I wanted to make sure their first concert EVER was seeing Joe Bonamassa on stage... the only bad thing about it is, any concert they see from now on will pale in comparison to him... because we all know that after Joe, there's no going back! wink

He was so great to them after the show, they all met him and he gave them autographs, picks, and calendars... they were over the moon- they couldn't stop talking about him for days afterwards. Truly a great experience!

Have fun at the show!

Re: Pain and Sorrow

Joe played Pain and sorrow at the first concert I saw him in Duiven november 2004. After that i saw him 6 times but he did it never again what I really regret.
It's one of the best songs he made, the playing and guitarsounds are fantastic.
That song in Diuven i will never forget, he played it brilliant.
It's the one of the best songs Joe played on stage.
I hope he does it again in the future!

Re: Pain and Sorrow

I doubt he will do that song anymore. That was back in the rock days of So It's Like That. Have you heard a real rocker since that? Had to Cry Today doesn't count. That was done cause there wasn't a studio version of it by Joe.

Blues ain't nothin' but a good woman gone bad.

Re: Pain and Sorrow

I'll be seeing Joe for 4 nights in a row in December in Green Bay. Perhaps an arm could be gently twisted so that he could play it one of those nights. I too am a fan of the song.

Never hurts to ask. Last time he played there Joe pulled out a song they hadn't played/practiced in several years, by fan request.

Re: Pain and Sorrow

Sometime last summer, Joe started a fun thread in which us fans voiced our opinion as to the current set list he was on at that time.  I don't remember all of the details, but someone tallied up the lists.  I'm thinking Lie#1 was way up there on the list, along with Heartaches/Nickels, many of the blues deluxe numbers were requested as well as Pain & Sorrow.

Shortly after that list was compiled and I assume read by Joe,  we attended a show and were fortunate enough to get a live version of pain and sorrow (on that world renouned gold sparkle strat), and we also got "I know where I belong" on the same instrument.  Keep in mind that it was the old rhythm section at that time.  I would be very surprised if it turned up in a current set list, though.

I gotta tell ya, the live version Joe played of pain & sorrow was very good, but there were a few variations, I think, due to the fact that he hadn't played it in a while and that we are so used to the studio version of that song with all of it's wonderful bells and whistles, that he couldn't replicate live at that time.  Having said all of this, Joe, being the professional that he is, is extremely good at improvising on the spot.

He has such an entourage of songs built up though, that we wonder if we would ever hear any of the older ones live any time soon, but remain hopeful.  I look forward to hearing the newer songs played live, ... So many roads, Bridge, Tamp em up, etc.  and of course, his masterpiece, "Mountain Time", which we hope he never stops playing.

Re: Pain and Sorrow

Kat&Jim:  I remember that last summer, thought it was really cool that Joe would do that.  We have seen Joe perform Pain and Sorrow several times and has always been one of my favorites.  Just an awesome song, so many effects and sounds that is almost unbelievable.  I remember one time he performed at Moon Dogs, outside Pittsburg, and just tore it up....

We probably will not be hearing this anytime soon, but you never know.  Any of the new songs off of "You and Me" should be instant classics too.  Really look forward to seeing what the setlists will be for this summer.

Music is good for the Soul...

Re: Pain and Sorrow

this is my favorite too....
he's probably sick of playing the tune...

BUST IT OUT @ 2FROGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Pain and Sorrow

From a fan perspective,  wouldn't it be nice if Joe could do a shuffle on all of his songs and let the I-pod make his setlist based on a random selection.  That way all of his songs would have an equal shot at coming up in his current set lists.

From Joe, Mark & Bogie's perspective, this is probably a nightmare.   I have always wondered from the musician's vantage point,  what criteria goes into the current set list, how does it change, who changes it up & why.

One would have to consider pure boredom in the realm of possibility.  If a fan hears a song once live in say two years,  its great.  How many times if we were in Joe's shoes could we stand playing a certain song over and over throughout a tour before you're ready to puke it ?

It would be nice to understand the true anatomy and agony of the setlist.   C'mon now- give us the good, the bad, and the ugly of it so we can better understand...   pease !!  pretty pease w/ real whipped cream and a cherry on top !

Re: Pain and Sorrow

June 2nd you mean...id hate for you to be 6 days late for the show!!!

Tell me about the car i saw parked outside your door ? Tell me what you left me waiting two or three hours for ? Tell me why when the phone rings, baby, your up and across the floor ? Please dont keep me wondering no more.....

Re: Pain and Sorrow

I feel fortunate to have experienced Pain & Sorrow last time Joe came to Houston - it was awesome!  However, that's the one song that I think sounds better on the CD than live.

Re: Pain and Sorrow

Joe did "Pain and Sorrow" the very first time I ever saw him live.  I remember it well, because I made a point of catching the title of that song as he sang it.  I was totally blown away.  The next day at Best Buy, with both ANDY and SILT in my hands, trying to decide which one to buy, I checked to see which CD had "Pain and Sorrow."

I wound up buying them both, of course.

I guess I've seen Joe perform "Pain and Sorrow" about three or four times.  Never gets old.   But that first performance still stands out in my mind as the best.  He doesn't seem to do it at the outdoor shows, so I'm guessing it won't be on the set list at Playing with Fire.  I suppose I can understand that; it's a lengthy tune, and even longer live.

Simple solution to that, though, Joe:  just play a bit longer.  :-)

Re: Pain and Sorrow

Jane:  Pain & Sorrow is a lengthy song.   Playing a song in varying ways has nothing to do with stumbling through it.  Joe doesn't  stumble through songs.  Studio versions of songs like P & S are going to be different than a live version, particularly when the artist hasn't played the song in a while, &  does not have access to the exact same tools that made the studio version in that live setting.

In this regard,  the song variations that take place in a live setting are not necessarily better or worse than the studio version,  just different that's all.  But I think the interesting part of it is the creative changes that take place in the songs OVER TIME.

((Case in Point- The first time I heard Mountain Time was on the SILT CD.  O.K., yeah I guess I like this, yet I would skip over this time after time after time to play Pain & Sorrow and the other songs I really liked.  OVER TIME,  I've heard this song different ways, live and on Rockpalast.  WOW- what did I miss with this song.  Especially the way he sings it & plays it on Rockpalast.  I see it now as a masterpiece.   Just used my case in point to illustrate the point about pain & sorrow. ))

Not to worry, I'm a thoroughly steeped JBB fan too !!      (I certainly hope you didn't  get this impression from my comments)

We're all on the same page !!!  I'll go & have some tea for one now.

Re: Pain and Sorrow

The first time I saw him play P&S live was during a radio show broadcast. I was lucky enough to be in the studio so I got an up close perspective. I at first had no idea he could play it live having just heard it on SILT. I thought there were too many studio tricks and overdubs. When I asked him how the hell does he pull that off he replied that is the same way he recorded it live in studio. I have seen him do it numerous times since then and as always each time it was performed it smoked. The only thing I didn't like about it was I knew if he played P&S there wasn't going to be AYE. That has and alway will be the one I never tire of.

I do sense that P&S and AYE will be put on the back burner for the time being. Something just as good will take their place. For the time being I have AYE on DVD and P&S on numerous recordings. One recording in particular has them both played in the same night. Tivoli in Ardmore. A rarity for sure.

I know this if they ever do work P&S up it will get played in MD Jane.

Re: Pain and Sorrow

No - it's not just b.s. you made up in your head. I get it, but must admit, I sometimes have trouble following your drift, but I get this one.

You'll have to ask Joe though how long it took him to do that song in studio for the SILT C/D.  Just curious because it amazes me how some songs seem to flow out instantly, no editing, no re-do's.  Then others are a struggle.   When a group of musicians are "on it",  it does seem to happen fast though.  I think creativity comes in waves. How could it be a constant.  Just IMHO.

Take care.

Re: Pain and Sorrow

Interesting sidebar to the Pain and Sorrow discussion, I have been told this song was never played exactly the same way each time live. The intro and ending was standard, but the middle of the song was basically unscripted - a sort of open-ended improvisation. Also, if I understand correctly, the studio version of Pain and Sorrow on SILT was only the band's 2nd time playing it, or was the 2nd take...something like that. Amazing!

Re: Pain and Sorrow

And ditto that Stu:  Thanks for keeping us all grounded, and feeding us with factual information. Like it, like it.

Re: Pain and Sorrow

I have seen Pain & Sorrow and Are You Experienced in the same night 3 times... I still like if 6 was 9/Spanish Castle Magic best though..
