Sometime last summer, Joe started a fun thread in which us fans voiced our opinion as to the current set list he was on at that time. I don't remember all of the details, but someone tallied up the lists. I'm thinking Lie#1 was way up there on the list, along with Heartaches/Nickels, many of the blues deluxe numbers were requested as well as Pain & Sorrow.
Shortly after that list was compiled and I assume read by Joe, we attended a show and were fortunate enough to get a live version of pain and sorrow (on that world renouned gold sparkle strat), and we also got "I know where I belong" on the same instrument. Keep in mind that it was the old rhythm section at that time. I would be very surprised if it turned up in a current set list, though.
I gotta tell ya, the live version Joe played of pain & sorrow was very good, but there were a few variations, I think, due to the fact that he hadn't played it in a while and that we are so used to the studio version of that song with all of it's wonderful bells and whistles, that he couldn't replicate live at that time. Having said all of this, Joe, being the professional that he is, is extremely good at improvising on the spot.
He has such an entourage of songs built up though, that we wonder if we would ever hear any of the older ones live any time soon, but remain hopeful. I look forward to hearing the newer songs played live, ... So many roads, Bridge, Tamp em up, etc. and of course, his masterpiece, "Mountain Time", which we hope he never stops playing.
