Re: Black Country at Riverside, CA show on 3/17 ??!! :))

I guess the reactions to the SDG prove how diverse J.B. fans are. Joe is our common thread. You don't have to go far for the splinters to show. But, that's a GOOD thing. New fans for all involved, and a new adventure for Joe. Rock on! Another fact about Joe fans is they are bright, articulate, and civil. Bravo gentlemen! Welcome Newbies and a pat for the old dogs. Good boys!      C

Well said Cathy.  smile
Perhaps a thread on SDG would be well placed in Other Artists.
I know that our carload last night covered 3 generations and post show approval of the two pieces was unanimous. That was some Bad A## Rock! Pretty brave for Joe to throw that in the face of a room full of Blues folk. Not exactly what some expected as an encore.

Thank you folks for the feedback. I stand by what I heard - last night, Joe was excellent, but Black Country was not well received and Hughes really did sound comical and childish. He really sounded like he was plucking the same string repeatedly and screaming at the top of his lungs. However, I recognize the problem with small sample size hence my prediction that there will be no benefit to this venture is too hasty. So I'll wait for a studio release. I wish Joe and BC good luck in finding their voice.  And yes - it may need to be directed toward a completely different audience.

I enjoy reading constructive criticism  and so reserve the right to change my mind. big_smile

(I hope Joe feels similarly. )

Long time fan, first timer poster.

I'm a fan of both Blues and Rock. More of a Rock fan, but I've never been a headbanger. And having been a life-long Zeppelin fan, I was stoked and curious to hear Jason Bonham.

I was disappointed. Glen Hughes was a spastic screaming nutjob on stage. Although I though he had a great voice, I didn't enjoy the vocals at all, didn't want to see his tongue draped all over the stage (I have a dog thank you). The music itself was just sorta washed out, the drumming was just pounding away. It was just in-your-face-for-no-other-reason-than-to-be-in-your-face music. And like I said, I'm a fan of rock old and new.

On the plus side, Joe's band was as tight as ever. Bogie is strong as ever. Joe was having some fun with the audience as usual. (I'm sure he was kidding with the Riverside remark, but I'm from the OC and only dared venture into Riverside to see JB.) And I had my 14 year old son with me who said he really liked the music after hearing it live. Ain't that the truth?

I like to see Joe venturing into Rock. He can bring a much needed lift to the current drab that's out there now. He'll become known to a wider audience. I wish the project all the success. I just can't say I would put what I heard last night on my iPod.

New video.

I still cannot understand why people think Bogie is a better drummer...I think people need to branch out more...sorry. (drummers equally good, but surely in different ways)

Re: Black Country at Riverside, CA show on 3/17 ??!! :))

Nice!, now we are seriously talking people!
Joe's band have been playing on the road now for a while and playing some heavy rotations. They are tight as you can be.
When Soupa De Groupa packs their bags and hits the road JB will demand some serious tightness and at that time we will see SDG ROCK at their best and it will be a thing of beauty.

I can't see how that can be anything but damn cool...

Far away from Joe on his own...which I like. I think Glenn's voice is superb!

Re: Black Country at Riverside, CA show on 3/17 ??!! :))

Thanks very much to the video posters!!!

Ok, I've watched both songs.  It's rock.  It's a departure for Joe, and it's pretty good rock.

Not bad at all for a first time on stage together, and a project only a few months old.

I'm intrigued to hear more.

Hughes vocals are fine.  Not necessarily my taste, but they're fine.  Great range and power, and that's what you want from a metal vocalist.

Sweet guitar riffs though!

Re: Black Country at Riverside, CA show on 3/17 ??!! :))

I love One Last Soul.  A very powerful and hard driving groove.  I think these guys may have something here.

Re: Black Country at Riverside, CA show on 3/17 ??!! :))

From what I can see most of the feedback appears to be positive.

Dislike some of the clumsy phrasing used to describe Glenn Hughes performance but overall, for a first time out, I thought it was OK. 'The Last Soul' appealed to me more than yet another treatment of 'Mistreated' (so to speak).

It's rock music for sure, although JB added some of his more bluesy subtle playing to 'Mistreated' and I wasn't so sure it was fully at home there, but its early days.

Hughes is a brilliant vocalist and bassist. If he is a 'nutjob' then you would have to lump Plant, Gillan, Coverdale and many others into that category too. It's a sweeping generalisation which affords no credit whatsoever to superb performers.

Rock music tends to be somewhat overfuelled at times and the musicians involved can react to that sometimes overdoing the extremities of their ability. Glenn Hughes can sing and play in a vast variety of musical styles. It might not be to everyone's taste, but the shrieking banshee element of his vocal range can be regarded as a 'must have' in this genre of music. Why does he do it? Well, like dogs that can lick...........because he can wink

Re: Black Country at Riverside, CA show on 3/17 ??!! :))

This is a new role for Joe. He's no longer the frontman, just a member of the band.
I think he kinda likes it that way.

Major Tom to ground control...

Re: Black Country at Riverside, CA show on 3/17 ??!! :))

I'm glad most of you have come around from the initial knee jerk reaction. I was there. I am an old rock fan from the earliest days and, although rough, understandable with their limited time together, this sounded like the goods to me. His drummer and keyboardist were playing borrowed gear. Joe's setup was tuned for blues. I can't wait to hear this with a rig setup for a true Rock sound and the other members playing their own instruments.
I understand the reaction of some that were there. They paid hard earned money to hear Joe play the music they love. Getting slapped in the face by an unannounced encore of this type of music was a shock when they were expecting the usual.
This is what Joe wants and I say more power to him. He was having a real good time up there with the group.  I see a big future and bet there are some excellent new songs coming from this group. I'll be the first in line when the CD comes out.

Rick...are you saying Bonham had borrowed kit?

...because that's his sig. Ludwig kit...and most definitely sounds like his kit.

I said drummer and keyboardist, no mention of Glenn. He definitly played his own bass and I think the voice was his too.  tongue

Wise words Rick. I've watched Tom's videos and Libby's videos and I enjoyed every minute (thanks guys). I reckon there's big things coming our way from Joe & co.
