The Beatles at one time were considered fluff. Now, I'm not saying that Beyonce = The Beatles. But, what I'm saying is, who knows what the history books will say about today's music. I'm sure there were people who loved Big Band and Sinatra in the 40s and 50s who loathed Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles, and now Hendrix and the Beatles are viewed as true art. Who knows. Something so objective is hard to nail down, what is art and what is not.

Look, the question is, and should always, not whether something is art or not. Not whether something is good or not. It should be, do I like it or not? It's so objective, it's hard to tell. So it's best to just avoid the question all together, because there will never be a right answer, no matter how right you think you are.

as far as i'm concerned art is created for the sake of art, beyonce is a character carefully crafted by many different people to sell as much as she can for as long as she can.  beyonce's music is commerce, not art.  i don't care how right other peple think i am, i don't speak for them, i speak for myself.  of course there is no universally right answer i assumed that went without saying.

That is extremely naive. Anyone, and I mean anyone, from Elvis to the Beatles to Led Zeppelin to New Kids On the Block, if you put a record out and takes money for it is in business. If it were created purely "for art," then they wouldn't take 15 dollars a cd would they?

There's your clue: you speak for yourself and that's the only right thing to do. By answering the question 'do i like it or not ' you're in a way creating your own art... smile

you're interpretation of what i wrote is extremely naive.  i know money is a factor.  i am not an idiot.  everyone wants their record to sell, the question is do they write and record material that they really believe in or do they scrap trying to find themselves creatively in favor of putting out hit after hit.  i didn't say that it was immediately not art if money were involved.  if you don't understand my problem with acts like beyonce, there is nothing more i can do to spell it out for you. you don't have to agree with me, most people don't, i understand this.  please don't call me naive though. i don't define acts like her as artists and i never will.

Re: Beyoncé

I don't know whether they're trying to scrap for hits or not. I'm not there for those decisions they make. So I don't make an assumption on what they're doing. You never know, someone like Beyonce may have complete control over what she does. I get the feeling that she does what she wants for the most part.

And for the record, I didn't say you were naive. I said your statement was, not you. I didn't mean it towards you in any way. If you took it that way I apologize. I don't try to name-call or put people down. And I was referencing the "art for art's sake" for that, which, my point being, in the music business, there is no "art for art's sake" because it's all being sold. It's all "art for sale" because everyone's selling.

Re: Beyoncé

I'll speak for myself, now.  You are both right...sorta.  Deezer's point is good.  Suhl's question is also excellent.

If i wanted to make music or art for art's sake, I'd never come outa my studio.  But of course there's money involved.  But there is so much more than money for money's sake.

Most performers have to.  They have a calling to play and be recognized.  I do.  Money is a nice way to support my habit AND keep score.  It's hard for me because I play what I want to.  It makes my bandmates CRAZY.  I bend often because I have to.  I cannot play for myself or by myself and not perform.

I don't know what Beyonce's control level is.  I know she ditched her first controller.  She's married to a guy who made 175 million last year.  She doesn't have to perform; or does she?  WE don't know...

I know I like looking at her! wink  Even on this forum, I don't have the same mind set that most do.  Most come from a hard rock background.  I don't.  Puts a different spin on my tastes.

You usually won't see me enter any opinion on any thread that starts with "...the greatest..." anything.  Who do you like today?  would probably serve us all a little better.  I don't know if there's an ulterior motive to stirring up poo poo, but, it sometimes seems that way.

That's my opinion...today.  Now where is that big legged young thing...hmm ?  cool

Re: Beyoncé

her control level has nothing to do with it.  well, i won't lie to me it does have something to do with it.  however, even if she wrote every song and choreographed every monster spectacle award show performance, it is not something i would define as art.  yes, it falls into the medium of music the same way porno falls into medium of film.  i consider neither one art even if on some slipping through the cracks level it is.  for the record i don't consider reality tv or sitcoms art.  i don't consider andrew dice clay a comedian with a shred of artistic integrity, i don't consider beyonce a musician with a shred of artistic integrity.

i'm not saying beyonce is a worthless human being at all.  hell of a businesswoman and performer, not a hell of an artist.  to me there are irreconcilible differences between those things.

i don't mind people making money, we all gotta eat and if you can make it doing what you love more power to you.  but, the thrill of success (yes i realize she has more money than she could hope to spend) is what i think motivates beyonce, not creativity, not art.  i guess that is a judgement call i can't make with a hundred percent certainity unless i know her personally.  if art is what motivates her, i think her art is unoriginal crap.

i can agree on this:  i love looking at her, particularly in that old music video where she had on the tiny jean shorts and the white tank top:o

Re: Beyoncé

All I can say is that Beyonce is an amazing talent.  She can sing, which is enough for me.  She also has a great band (she only hires female jazz musicians who can actually play), and has great live arrangements of her tunes.  She can hang with the best.  Maybe she's not the best ever, but on the scene today, definitely a top talent.

Re: Beyoncé

Lets also remember.... Beyoncé is still only 28!! A baby, in terms of her career lifespan.

If you were talking about the "Spice Girls" I would agree with you, but i think Beyoncé is quite a few notches above them, don't you think ?

Re: Beyoncé

The Billboard charts tells us that Beyonce is a recording artist and a very succesful one, regardless of what her motivation is, that is a fact.

Only history can tell us if what she's currently doing is art.

Re: Beyoncé

OK last post on this fine young thing:  Last year in a conversation about this same thing, with a bass player who wears costume, makeup and armor...yeah him...he asked me point plank, "What did you think of Titanic, the movie?"  I made gagging pantomines and he laughed in my face.

"The whole world disagrees with you, Jeff.  You sit in judgement on yourself."   Arrrgh!  Doesn't mean I'm wrong...all it demonstrates is that "All I have is an opinion."  I can't really argue with 850 million dollars...not at my age.

Art or not...opinion.

Yeah well I still haven't seen Titanic because I could smell a super-hyped bore.  My opinion hides from that kind of stuff and says, some could guess here-BAH! I like Beyonce, but... yeah that too.   Nevermind me.

Gene was amused by my friends 5 year old grandson at NAMM...  (And I liked Kiss when there was no hype except what a few of us made, and it wasn't overdone as "super'')

Re: Beyoncé

you are allowed to like beyonce.  i do not care if you do.  trying to convert people to not liking her has not been my cause this whole time.  anyone who thinks that is missing the point.  i am not trying to make people feel bad about liking her.  i am fully aware she has way more fans than any artist i listen to and appeals to massive amounts of people.

i feel the way i do for a simple reason: to me, a word ceases to have any meaning if it is thrown around.  in my view, for something to qualify as art, there has to be some creativity involved.  i don't see this with beyonce.   this is not because i don't like her music.  for example, i can't stand u2.  that said, they are out there creating art.

Actually Jeff, according to forbes, Beyonce and Jay Z are the highest earning couple in show business with a combined $122 million for 2009, but... Beyonce made $87m and Jay Z made $35m. I think Beyonce has officially "Paid the Cost to be the Boss" ! tongue She's an earner, and a talent! She sings, acts, dances, and sells out concerts worldwide. Even in Ireland! She's a Phenom.
