Topic: Screwed by a Blues Deville at a gig Thursday.

Man alive I hate those amps!  We go to this bar that has a stage setup that all you do is plug into his stuff, really nice equipment.  Anyway nomally he has a Hot Rod Deluxe to play though and even though the overdrive is less then to be desired for its still a very good overdrive just to plug in and play.  The blues deville had a clean channel and another channel that acted more like a boost.  That was the cleanest sound I ever tried live in a room with about 100 people there.  I had a Stratocaster too so think ice picks.
Our other guitarist had a Les paul in a Vox with a Big muff pedal so it seemed like one sound was Led Zeppelin and the other side was merle haggard.  The owner said it was the best we had ever done up there, but it made me think that I am dire need of a Distortion or Overdrive pedal.  I've said this before on here but as much pain as my ears suffered last night I  want to make sure that doesn't happen again.
So I got a bit more back on my tax return then expected and don't have to sneek around my wife, I have $400 to buy some pedals.  I don't want a multie effects pedal.  Just a great overdrive or distortion pedal and maybe a modulation pedal or 2.  I  have a Delay, a Wah, and a Compressor pedal already so I don't want anything like that.  My plan is to build a pedal board that I can just plug in and go anywhere weather its played in my amp or someone elses.  I had a fine clean sound just no balls behind it last night.

Re: Screwed by a Blues Deville at a gig Thursday.

I feel your pain (literally through sore ears), my last band the other guitarist had one with a tele through ice pick wasn't the word it was like a death ray through the ears at times...

You cant go wrong with a Fulltone OCD or a Fulldrive both are very fine pedals. I made a pedal board out of an old wooden wine box it works quite well although its a tad small... Wah > OCD > 69. The OCD will get you the marshall type crunch / drive easy.

Anyhow good luck

Re: Screwed by a Blues Deville at a gig Thursday.

Timmy.

This OD Pedal is the "Swiss Army Knife" of Pedals!

The EQ Section alone makes this OD so versatile. You can retain Highs and/or Lows with OD. You can run just about any Instrument, Amp and other Effects through it and they will sound better.

Their Slogan should read something like: "Timmy, making bad Amps sound good since ......"

As to the actual OD Tones? Well, it's the closest thing I've found to making a lower Volume setting sound like the Amp is "on the edge of breakup". And when cranked up some more, it has a little meaner sound than a Tube Screamer type Pedal. A little more Gain, as well.

Anyway, do an Internet Search and I think you'll find that I'm not the only devotee.

That and a good Delay Prdal will yield a LOT of options! (And the Digitech Hardwire Delay looks promising, but I need to play with one some more.)

Good luck on your search. Let us know what you end up with.

Forgot to mention this:

Another way to get some righteous tones, is to CRANK the Treble on the Amp. Then, turn your Guitar's Tone Knob all the way down. Now, bring the Guitar's Tone Knob up until you find the "Sweet Spot" that sounds good.
What you get, is a very hip Tone. It does seem to have this "Hollow" type of sound to it, also. Cuts through a Mix really well, and yields a Fatter, much Warmer Tone with a very sweet High End. Not too many seem to talk about this. But, I have seen countless players use this Technique.
I use it quite a bit, myself.

Plus, it will keep the IcePicks away!

Re: Screwed by a Blues Deville at a gig Thursday.

Nothing has taken the "icepick" out of a Fender guitar for me like the Fulltone Fulldrive 2 or a BK Butler Tube Driver.  The Tube Driver is Gilmour/Johnson in a box and, for the warm tones, theres nothing else out there that does it for me.  The Fulldrive 2 in on my grab-and-go little board because I can get my tone through any amp with it.

Fulldrive 2 or Tube Driver (3 knob) - $150-$170
Mini Deja Vibe -$250 (great for fattening up single coils and makes your sound stick out) OR
TC SCF chorus $280 also check out the Carl Martin XII chorus if you can't swing the TC
Xotic EP-Booster- $110 (based off of the famous EP-3 echoplex preamp that EJ uses to fatten up his Stratocasters)

Any of the above mentioned pedals used correctly can help fatten up that tone and you should be able to get great tones through any amp.

Re: Screwed by a Blues Deville at a gig Thursday.

Hi there, up until recently I was using a Fender Hot Rod Deville or a Mesa Express with a great Pedal by Brian Wampler called a 'Plexi Drive'
He makes pedals for Brent Mason and seems to be on the up.
He also does a nice 'Zendrive/Dumble' type pedal called an Ecstacy Pedal, also very nice.
I have had loads of pedals over the last couple of years and the Plexi Drive was the closest I ever came to sounding like a Marshall without a Marshall.

I have a demo on Youtube:

Guitars: 95 Les Paul Standard, Relic Strat,
Amps: 1973 Marshall JMP 50 head and Vintage Modern Cab. I use no effects other than a Cry Baby on occasions.

Re: Screwed by a Blues Deville at a gig Thursday.

Hey guys I just got my Rockbox Boiling Point overdrive pedal the other day and all I can say is OMG big_smile . This pedal is so versatile its insane . I also have a Carb by Gas Pedals which is also a great pedal but the Rockbox IMO has more flavors to it . Its worth the price of admission without a doubt .

Re: Screwed by a Blues Deville at a gig Thursday.

Great suggestions!  I'm getting the money next Friday and I'm still on the fence a bit.  I've been looking at the OCD by Fulltone and also a Love Pedal Purple Plexi for weeks now.  I wanted a Boiling Point Rockbox but $350 for a pedal blows most of my budget and I'm really wanting a Flange pedal as well.  Chorus is nice but I really enjoy thick swirl sounds like a flange.  I'm thinking maybe a Ibanze Paul Gilbert Air Plane Flange AF2 would be really cool, I really like how you dial in a controlled sound and then have a Taxi/Take off sound thats just wild and out of control when you click it.  With either one of the od pedals and the AF2 I come up to $350.  I've seen the OCD for as low as  $135.  I'm just looking for quality pedals but bang for the buck.  I've got materials at my work to put together a pedal board so after I decide what I'm getting I can draw up a box.  BTW what do you guys think of wall wort plugins?  Do batteries give better tone then a ac adapter?  Anyway thanks for all the suggestions and I'll look them up tonight.

Re: Screwed by a Blues Deville at a gig Thursday.

Fulldrive 2- tubescreamer plus, 2 levels of boost/OD

xotic bb preamp- even more flexiblity than fulldrive,

MI crunchbox- OD to heavy modded marshall crunch- I think more distortion on tap than other 2

I have and like all 3.

I don't think any are over $150 off ebay, and all will give you guaranteed tone to the bone.

Re: Screwed by a Blues Deville at a gig Thursday.

check out visual sound's pedals, their good bangs for the buck. I  have their  open road overdrive and like it a lot. Unfortunately  my hot-rod deville  laid down on me 6 months ago and i haven't gotten it fixed yet, so i don't know what it sounds like through it.

I can't believe I forgot to suggest these guys:

Ha! After all, I have 5 or 6 different Effects built by me or a friend. Definately a bargain, for really top notch stuff.
And go to their Forums, and learn about all the possible mods you can do to the basic kits. A lot of the same things done the same way as many "Boutique" Pedals.

Anyway, I can highly recommend these. As well as the Kits from Wampler, as mentioned by chooseyourblues.

Awesome site! I'm going to order a couple of these, any recommendations?

Re: Screwed by a Blues Deville at a gig Thursday.

I have a TS with Mods type pedal. It is basically a clone of an Eternity. Smoother, warmer than a stock TS to my ears. Also, does a nice Treble Boost when desired.
Also, a RAT type that has Mods to be like a Landgraff Mo'D. Very aggressive and versatile. Pops out of a band mix with authority. And the 3 Position Tollge Switch for Clipping Options makes it fit into a lot of different setups.
The BYOC Chorus/Vibrato I use is also what I would call Warm and FAAAT sounding. Very nice.

I haven't tried it (yet!), but the new OD2 looks really sweet! And my friend (yes, I actually do have one......) has a TriBoost he loves. He also digs t GGG Standard OD. (General Guitar Gadgets. Also a maker of great Kits and Pedals.)
I'll try to post a picture of a Pedalboard I use sometimes, wit the Pedals mentioned.

I'm looking at the Armstrong twin (compressor and octave in one!), and the tremolo. I have so many good boost/OD pedals already. I have to say that OD2 kit is very tempting though... big_smile

Re: Screwed by a Blues Deville at a gig Thursday.

I have a Hot Wired pedal made by Wampler. I love it!!!! Best pedal I've played for ages!! It's made to Brent Mason's specs but it does more than just country. I really do recommend trying it out.

I have a Clapton strat which has the boost which makes it dirtier sounding. It is quite hard however to get a real crisp clean sound but I very rarely need or like the 'ice pick' sound so suits me perfectly.

Re: Screwed by a Blues Deville at a gig Thursday.

...I dig my Blues Deville. Power soak in the effects loop, love it.
