For me, when I see a guy strap on a Tele it screams, "I mean business now". When I was a kid I remember that scene from Crossroads where Ralph Macchio cuts Steve Vai's head. I didn't know it was Ry Cooder and Steve Vai at the time, I just thought "Oh my God that old butterscotch Tele spanked the Devil's guitar player!!" Every time I see a Tele I'm reminded of all the monster Tele players of days past and the future ( Brad Paisely in particular).
To me the sheer simplicity of the design is what makes such a powerful statement. If you can knock 'em dead with a Tele you can knock 'em dead with just about anything. I've been eyeballing the Fender Custom Shop '63s pretty hard and also the Nash Tele Customs. I would love a candy apple red Tele Custom with binding!
