Topic: Any Telecaster fans on this board?

Hey guys -

I see alot of strat vs. LP threads over here.  Any of you guys fans of the Tele?  Just curious.  I'm building a dual HB tele at the moment...solid one piece mahogany body.  Shall we say, an LP inspired tele??  smile

I love teles... I have 2 thinlines. One mahogany mexican fender (that I've changed almost everything on) , and one Ron Kirn. Both of mine have dual single coils (budz). I had some Bill Lawrence noiseless in the mexican. The bridge pickup he made for me was so fat, it sounded like a humbucker.

Re: Any Telecaster fans on this board?

Telecaster was my favorite guitar when I started playing 10 years ago.  I was 18 and dropping hints to my parents that I would love to get a cheap Tele.  My dad took me to look at some in a local guitar shop and this lady who didn't know a thing about guitar said to him Strats were considered Rock and Roll and Telecasters were country.  This being said my dad was a huge Clapton fan and told me that EC plays Strats and if a Strat is good enough for him it was good enough for me.  I didn't care because I just wanted an electric guitar!  To this day I've owned tons of Strats but not one Telecaster.  My dad has had 4 since then but he trades guitar like a car hoping he'll find the perfect guitar one day.  I love telecasters and for the record Led Zeppelin's first album was a Telecaster, and the solo to Stairway To Heaven was that same Telecaster!  So yeah Telecaster totally for country!

Re: Any Telecaster fans on this board?

For me, when I see a guy strap on a Tele it screams, "I mean business now".  When I was a kid I remember that scene from Crossroads where Ralph Macchio cuts Steve Vai's head.  I didn't know it was Ry Cooder and Steve Vai at the time, I just thought "Oh my God that old butterscotch Tele spanked the Devil's guitar player!!"  Every time I see a Tele I'm reminded of all the monster Tele players of days past and the future ( Brad Paisely in particular).

To me the sheer simplicity of the design is what makes such a powerful statement.  If you can knock 'em dead with a Tele you can knock 'em dead with just about anything.  I've been eyeballing the Fender Custom Shop '63s pretty hard and also the Nash Tele Customs.  I would love a candy apple red Tele Custom with binding!

Re: Any Telecaster fans on this board?

My #1 is a tele, has been for 16 years.  I just don't like Les Pauls (heresy!).  I do like my PRS SC, but don't like LPs.  To me, the tele is a guitar that can do ANYTHING, including "impersonate" a LP, if you want it to, with the right pup & OD pedal.  Just super-versatile.

My PRS SC has DGT (David Grissom) pickups, and I have them wired for coil-spilt, so you would think THAT guitar would be my "do-anything" axe, but the tele can "do anything" better than the PRS.

Jimmy Page.... the only one to make one sound as big as a LP.

Re: Any Telecaster fans on this board?

Been a big Stones fan for years, and after my playing got to a half decent standard, I could never really understand why whenever I tried to play some of their classic songs, they never sounded quite right. Then I found out about open G tuning and the techniques Ry Cooder had passed on to Keith, and retuned my Mexican Strat and started having some fun. Still wasn't quite the real deal - but then I saw a Jap built Custom 52 tele re-issue with a neck 'bucker and couldn't resist. Some say they're better built than than the US built 52 RI (and less than half the price) - I've certainly had lots of other guitarists admiring it. I've gone the whole hog now and ripped off the low E and it really nails that Keith sound.

I bought another Tele about a year ago - a Korean built custom with spalted maple top, two coil-tappable Seymour Duncan buckers (The bridge pup is a Pearly Gates and sounds fantastic).
It's a slimline body so nice and light - perfect for gigs, sounds great, looks great, but my fingers and it are not the best of friends - maybe the neck's a little thin - just not working for me, so I'm thinking of selling to give my Les Paul fund a boost.

Please be in no doubt that this is the REAL ME! Beware imposters........................

Re: Any Telecaster fans on this board?

I am thinking about doing a warmoth tele build, but I probably wont get to that for quite a while.

I own a Fender Standard Telecaster with candy apple finish. Love that guitar. People who say stock Fender is not good I disagree! Actually, I haven't played it in a while, I need to get adjust it, it goes too out of tune making chords, but that's from me experimenting on it. I'll get that done. I'm feeling a little Tele action. cool

I love it when a thread will inspire you players to get out the duster and check the closet for old toys made new. smile

He likes 'em Teles, too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3nZ-6Be29M

Re: Any Telecaster fans on this board?

Teles, yep love 'em. I've got a relic custom shop nocaster with a 'bucker at the bridge ah la Micawber but with 6 strings. It's one of the most resonant guitars I own and I think the money you spend on the fender CS guitars is worth it. It's also got a massive neck which I find way more comfortable these days.

There's also an ESP The Eclipse in the herd. These were Tele shaped before the current LP shape of the Eclipse and is another one with a massive neck.
