Topic: But I Could Be Wrong

Anybody else feel this way? Give this Tim Wilson song a listen and tell me what you think. It sums up my thoughts just about every time I flip on the TV or stand in line at the grocery store looking at the rag mags starin' back at me. CAUTION!!! the F word is vital to the lyrics.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-5d5IfdYK4

Re: But I Could Be Wrong

Well at least TW has an outlet for his ire. I know what you mean and time was I probably soaked up all of this drivel which seems to be all around these days.

3 years ago though I dropped my cable subscription and stopped reading daily papers. It was all just too damn depressing. Yes, there were interesting things you could learn from time to time but you had to sit through so much rubbish to get to them.

I took a decision to cut the useless all pervasive pap out of my life if I couldn't be discipilined enough to hit the 'off' button.

Now I just use internet news sites to keep me up to date and check out stories that really interest me. The Oprah/Paris Hilton/ Brad Pitt merry-go-round passes me by. Big Brother, X-Factor, Reality TV, who cares?

I think if Tim Wilson's song really strikes a chord with a person then time to reflect why it does. The subject matter of his song are not worth the time of day so why give it? These celebs can't stand being ignored. What better way of hitting back at them. If only more people would.

Hope this doesn't sound too 'holier than thou'. Didn't mean it that way. I liked the song though and would happily duet it with him but would probably throw a few more 'F's' in !

Sorry Brack. The reference is distinctly American. I'm sure you have an equivalent there. We have a class of female dole recipients who milk the system by having serial children out of wedlock for which they recieve money from the government proportional to the number of children. The classic stereotype is an overweight breeder sitting on the sofa and watching Oprah and other garbage all day. The term is derogatory. A family member fits this description to a tee. wink  roll

Ah Yes! Thanks Rick, I know the reference you speak now! Sadly, we do have the equivalent .... and it's getting worse over here.

Re: But I Could Be Wrong

I never head of Tim Wilson, but I found this to be EXTREMELY FUNNY, because every day I get up anymore, I think I'm a little more cynical of the world in general.  The line from that Network movie keeps spinning in my head...

Stand up wherever you are, go to the nearest window and yell as loud as you can, 'I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore.'
Howard Beale (Peter Finch) in 'Network'

Even though I don't watch any of those tv shows mentioned, I've channelled surfed enough to catch a couple minutes here or there. Raymond has had some funny lines and one of my older brothers kidded my mom once about being like Raymond's mother, don't know her name, but my mom found no humor in it. big_smile In general, I think tv has gotten horrible, just my opinion, but reality shows do nothing for me.  My husband would categorize me as watching some trash shows, he hates tv...I like Mad Men, a couple other shows on occassion and sports.  When I watch tv, I want to escape reality, not watch sad stories, etc. sports, music and cooking shows are the best thing on, IMHO.  I use to enjoy some of the nightly cable news shows, but the bickering and partisanship is sickening anymore, I only watch small doses at a time...I'm feeling like Jane looking for the true news or John Lennon for that matter...Just Give Me The Truth!!!!  Last night I heard about $$$$$ going to a company in Boston that previously made inferior concrete for the Big Dig... Yikes!!

Rick, about that American distinction...we got that going on in the east coast as well.  I'm not talking politics and not everyone in need fits the stereotype, but to add one more layer to Rick's stereotype, I witness them real-life in the doctor's office I work in...they have free health care, don't show up for appointments at the doctor's office, so the doctor is doubly losing $$ and when they do show up, they are demanding, feeling very entitled and their nail polish & lipstick matches their designer pocketbooks and their designer shoes...are non-compliant patients and wouldn't think twice about suing the doctors arse when their diabetes runs wild and they have a diabetic ulcer that won't heal because they eat too much of the wrong food, which then leads to free hospitalization in an effort to avoid an amputation of a gangrenous area....and during their visit, you have the pleasure of listening to them tell you about their trip to Atlantic City.... hmm

That felt good to vent, thanks dawg...now I have the strength to go to work and battle insurance companies for payment... roll

Angela, Raymond's mother in the show was called Marie. Look around our families, and we can all identify with some, if not all the characters in that show.... thats why it became so popular!

its good to talk about though i think and even better to give the feedback to the media outlets that are letting you down. it may seem futile but the only chance at making it better IMO

Re: But I Could Be Wrong

Brack-Marie, that's it and that's why it was even funnier.  That's my mom's middle name and because there were a few other Angela's in the family, (I'm 4th generation) a whole contingency of relatives and cousins on my grandfather's side call my mom Marie to keep the confusion down... big_smile

Jane-I can't tell you how many things make me think of you.  Your open mindedness has attempted to open me up to country music...I think I replayed that video 5 times in a row to laugh a little more and to get a couple words I missed...which also reminds me of you, the lyrics queen....

I think I'm on the edge, that video hit my funny bone or something, can't stop laughing...I need me a straight jacket lol big_smile ....Believe it or not, I just read about a new speciality, I'm serious, the Laugh Doctor... I'll link when I can figure where I read it.

Re: But I Could Be Wrong

Well, I gotta tell you Angela it works.

I went to the (or a ) laught Doctor site - Clifford Kuhn and ended watching an old clip of BillCosby talking about a trip to the dentist. I mean, It wasn't like I needed to laugh but then, you don't do you?

This was a 7 minute clip. Maybe not the best he's ever done but I went from chuckling to almost crying. Gods know what the neighbours thought.

Loved it. Feel so refreshed now. Better than a power shower! Thanks

Jane,
I hear you on the consumer end of health ins., every year ours goes up and they take away something and deny more claims.  I'm going to post a thread about consumer alert on health insurance, not to talk about the politics but a consumer beware over something that happen to us recently...its outrageous...I reported my insurance company for fraud and plan on writing to our new governor.  We met a guy last night at a basketball game who runs his own business and he started talking about how much health ins. went up for his company this year for 50 employees...he brought up that everyone is crying the blues...hospitals, the doctors, the ins. companies...so where's all the $$$$$$ going if the ins. co. are taking more money from the consumers and covering less, paying the docs and hospitals less....somethings gotta give...I hear ya'... smile  I think the big increase this year had a little to do with cushioning the blow if the government passed something....

I would love to comment on your government Health policies, sadly I don't know enough, and your health system is so different to the UK's. But ours is far from perfect.

Rick,
You and dawg (The California Boys) are keepin' me in stiches, the bent over laughing kind.  big_smile  I have the urge for a rant thread, but I think it would get my butt banned from the forum after Jim fielded countless e-mails from forum readers saying that I am in violation of forum rules. Even if he agreed with me, he'd have to perform his duties as mod...I better not start either. roll

Jane, I didn't check out that graph the first time...wow!  We file claims electronically and are still drowning in paperwork.

Directly back to the topic---I thought the lines about hip-hop being able to play 3 chords and Barry Bonds fake home runs were really funny, especially with the recent news about McGuire.

OK dear Angela.
Agreed that excision or it's ilk would be a bad thing. We'll just have to tiptoe in the fringes, getting in a rip and dig now and then. wink  I never thought my off the wall comment about 'queens would take such a flyer. Just that listening to that tune had me instantly ROTF with the image of one I know.

Stay in those stitches, just not the BJJ type. If we couldn't laugh, we'd have to cry. (I'm a small businessman and health costs are killing us.)
