Topic: Have You Tried It In The Dark?

No, not that you naughty things. lol I’m talking about listening to music, of course!

I appreciate that most of us listen to music ‘on the go’ nowadays, but there’s nothing like sitting down and listening to music the old fashioned way through real hi-fi speakers. An even better way is to listen to your hi-fi in the dark, with maybe just the glow of the fire on these cold winter nights (unless you live in or near the southern hemisphere roll ). Try it sometime. It’s the best way to listen and really focuses the aural senses and makes the stereo soundstage come alive. You’ll be able to pick out the instruments and vocals much better than just closing your eyes, which really doesn’t have the same effect.

The best kind of music for this treatment is atmospheric music like Eric Clapton’s “The Edge of Darkness” from 24 Nights, which Joe played as the last track on his PR show last night, and Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”.

Any other suggestions for listening in the dark?

If you haven’t already tried this sensory treat, please give it a go and let us know what you think. You may even be able to work out what Joe's singing on "Mother Love". wink

Makes me think of when I was a teen and listened to the long version of Inna Gadda da Vida   (Iron Butterfly) in the dark with headphones, it was all rather trippy back then...........

First time I heard Kashmir was in the dark - it's still one of my all-time favorites.

We have done a LOT of camping over the years - amazing how good stuff sounds around a campfire (best done in the off season with no neighbors to complain about the volume level - Assateague during the week in late September comes to mind).

Try Pink Floyd in the dark....."One Of These Days" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTrNQCYh70Y

Saw the original members of the band (Roger Waters, Nick Mason, David Gilmour and Rick Wright) perform this song in a darkened field house in the early '70s. 40-50 feet from stage and center. Oh yes, it was fine! wink

I've always enjoyed listening to "smooth jazz" in the dark with or without company, it just feels right. When we still had KKSF FM the "smooth jazz station here in SF they had a nightly show called Lights Out San Francisco, maybe that's what got me in the habit.

How about "The End"? Very atmospheric and a perfect candidate for listening in the dark. cool

If you want the real experience, very dimmed lights and a huge spliff. Turns the music inside out...... Man cool

Re: Have You Tried It In The Dark?

Alone in a room, lying on my bed or sitting comfortably in a couch, dimmed lights, headphones on my head, eyes closed. It's just perfect. I can listen to about anything but the best experience I had so far was Beethoven's 9th (especially die Ode an die Freude).

But I need new headphones, these crappy wireless things are so... well, crappy! And I also need a pair of good speakers to use when nobody's home cool

Four Cornered Room by War. In fact, the entire The World Is A Ghetto album on which that song appears would be an excellent candidate!

In addition to the great music on that record, it's one of those recordings that features outstanding production and engineering.

India/Mountain time....Django have to be the best for me, the whole feel of the song really comes to life when you're in the dark; i like to play my guitar in the dark sometimes aswell it's a better atmosphere and feeling in my opinion and i tend to play better which is a plus.

Re: Have You Tried It In The Dark?

Pink Floyd's "Echoes"... laying flat in bed in the dark... preferably with headphones... cool wink

I had the strangest experience doing this back when I was in college... was a little altered (just herb) and sleepy... it's a 23-minute song... I was kinda drifting off towards the end, in that "twilight zone"... well there's a background sound that keeps going higher and higher as it approaches the end of the song... I think it inspired a dream... except it was more like an experience than a dream... it felt like my soul was physically being sucked out of my chest, and there were clouds of gray smoke swirling up and around me... I woke up to hear myself saying something out loud which I'd rather not repeat here (oh alright, it's a key element to the story... I was saying "Satan take my soul")... to which I immediately yelled out "NO!" to try to take it back... I was freaked out for a long time after that, afraid to die, etc.  True story. neutral

But don't worry, I'm sure this won't happen to you. tongue

By the way, I had a somewhat similar dream-like experience around that same time of my life doing the same thing with an old YES album... minus the soul-sucking... but of course it was already gone by then...... roll tongue

Re: Have You Tried It In The Dark?

I do it all the time.  Of course I like it in the light too cool!  But Rick B style since I was a kid, got in trouble all the time 'cause the folks went away and the volume went aWWWAaaaayyyyyyy UP.  They'd come home, I wouldn't hear even though they arrive like a bull in a China shop, nor see them even thought the lights blazed on I'd be so into it.  I'd see their lips moving...It'd REALLY get 'em set to kill when I fell asleep doing it that way! The same "You're gonna go deaf" spiel.... the old man's got the hearing aids...don't need them yet.  Never needed stimulation / inspiration / a drink whatever to go along, but wasn't always averse to it either, strangely it was more a day phenomenon than night. Studio it's fun unless you're reading lead sheets, but not in the control room, unless just a listen back...
