Topic: JB LP 004

Virgil and I have been trying to hunt this one down and we found some text from John Mayer saying he had 004, do you think this is it on the right http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgur … -Qb1xZCUBg

Re: JB LP 004

It looks indeed like a JBLP but to me it appears more like one of
the unaged ones.

Re: JB LP 004

Yeah that looks like it. Joe told me earlier this year that when he met John he gave John one of his LPs and John gave Joe one of his strats so that appears to be the case tongue

Re: JB LP 004

Joe got a pretty bad deal on that one.   As much as he hates Fender now days I'm surprised he didn't just say "Eh I'm good" to the John Mayer Strat.

Re: JB LP 004

Well, I must say, the John Mayer strat is nice... it's not AS nice as the Eric Johnson strat, but it's in the top 3 for signature models in Fender's lineup IMO. Another cool thing is that it doesn't look like a 'fanboy' guitar... it has the signature on the back of the neck. So when everyone looks at it they don't think "john mayer roll "

I played one and was tempted to buy it. Still I think bolt-on necks should never be more than $1000 no matter what brand it is.

Re: JB LP 004

Thats why my Sunburst 3 tone Stratocaster is my choice weapon.  I can still be a fanboy of say Eric Clapton and get his 70's sound or a bunch of other guys without the label of fanboy.  Plus I kid you not its a wicked cool playing and sounding guitar.  I've yet to play a Strat that plays better then this one and now I've dialed in a tone, its the best its ever been.  So if you play a Les Paul are you a fanboy?  Its a signature model.

Re: JB LP 004

I'm ganna have to disagree about the Les Paul signature thing.  He invented it and named it after himself.  Gibson just happened to endorse his invention.  Yes the Les Paul has his signature on it, but it goes deeper than that.  It's a model, and then there's a signature model.  The difference being the signature model is the artists (Jimmy Page, Clapton, Slash....) interpretation of that model (what they see the perfect strat, LP, tele, 335, or whatever it may be in their eyes), they didin't invent the bad boy - they tweaked it.

Re: JB LP 004

I must say I am a major fan boy. lol
But it is masked because it's so diverse in people who play the LP. I can't think of anyone who plays one simply because of Les Paul himself. For me that's about 20% to be honest cause I'm a WI boy.

I wouldn't have a Les Paul (or even be playing guitar period) if it was not for Ace Frehley. I grew up wanting to be in Kiss - and wielding a Les Paul. Owning one is a childhood dream come true. What did I know? I was two years old and listening to Creatures of the Night.

I also grew up listening to Ozzy. I have the same birthday as Randy Rhoads. Randy Rhoads? Les Paul.
Dire Straights - Money For Nothing. Mtv Video - Mark Knopfler? Les Paul.
Fast forward to me watching Def Leppard on Mtv... Steve Clark? Les Paul.
Then Guns N Roses got big... Slash? Les Paul.
Zakk Wylde joins Ozzy, wielding a Les Paul.
Wayne's World Comes out... They worship Aerosmith. Joe Perry? Brad Whitford? Les paul.
I started getting into Zeppelin. Jimmy Page? Les Paul.

When Joe came out, he played a Les Paul for Had To Cry Today. I always thought he saved the Les Paul for his best song. Now, he has a signature model.

Also, the over-winning thing about a Les Paul is that Lester himself hails from Wisconsin. I am as well.
Two things that make America what it is to the world as we know it came from Wisconsin: Harley-Davidson and Les Paul!

Re: JB LP 004

we have discussed this in the past, so I won't get into it too far here. But we've been talking over the years and Joe himself seems to agree that people who play strats are more quickly labeled with fanboy, srv, etc. labels than people who play les pauls. Lucky for LP fans, not so lucky for strat fans.

I must say that this aspect of guitar culture is very unfortunate and that nobody deserves to be judged in any way simply because of the brand of guitar they play. It's unfair, but it's also human nature. I guess the same reason we buy them is the same reason they label us.

Re: JB LP 004

I once heard there is no such thing as bad publicity, and even if playing a Stratocaster gets me labeled a SRV clone I'm cool with that.  Its just a label.  I am a Fan boy.  I owned quite a few nice guitars when I was younger and every one I bought was because Eric Clapton played one very similar to it.  I prefer to be called a EC clone as I don't know one SRV song.  I love Stevie but his tone was very bright and listening to him makes me think of what Joe Bonamassa said one time about how playing guitar isn't a test of man hood.  SRV is more guitarist then I'll ever be and to be called a Clone of him I think should be an Honor rather then a cut down.  In the end we should all just have a big jam and be happy with what we got.
