Re: Singing Advice....

Why do you think I bought it?  Seriously its a good book and within a week I could tell my voice was stronger just from the car rides and practicing with the CD.  But I quit singing after I saw a video tape of my groups first gig.  I was wondering which one of us was so awful and after about 30 minutes into the video I noticed that every time my mouth moved that horrible sound would come back.  Anyway to make a long story short I havent sang at a show since.  I really do believe nerves got the better of me though.

I got singing for dumbies and they had a cd you can sing along with.  It does scales where you sing with other singers, lip trills, tounge trills and all sorts of stuff.  I used to stick that in my cd player in my car while I would drive to work and let me tell you the attention you got while stopped at a red light was incredible!

"Singing for Dummies" sounds right up my alley! hmm

Re: Singing Advice....

Ok some basics:

If you need to look at your guitar while playing, forget about singing for a while and practice guitar until you can play with looking at it.
When singing and playing, it is easier to drop into a rhythm while singing. If you playing bass, being able to sing at the same time is a little harder to do. I am in the lucky position that the bad I manage both lead and bass can sing.  The bass player has to work a little harder to nail it though.
To sing properly, get singing lessons. Even if you have a good voice. Ill bet Joe has had more singing lessons that guitar lessons. There is much damage to be caused if not done properly.

Re: Singing Advice....

Hey Joe is a good song to start with, you can't really mess the words up and the rhythm is simple. It's also a good overall beginner song using all 5 open major chords, C, G, D, A, E. Have fun guys smile

Re: Singing Advice....

This is a good thread. I know joe's done quite a bit of work on his vocals over the years, so i'm sure he could really help us out here...hint hint nudge nudge wink Come on Joe you know you want to...

In the meantime I got this...

"Singing I’ve gotten better at, certainly, and it’s something I like to do, but it’s also the hardest thing I have to do. You have to manage your voice carefully - whether you can hit that high D or C all depends on how you’re feeling, on how you slept the night before. Everyday it’s a struggle. But the struggle is a challenge, I dig it. And I’ve got better at the singing over the course of the albums - if you listen to my early stuff, I sounded like I was being run over by a truck.”

The bit about the truck made me lol lol

Re: Singing Advice....

House is Rockin is a good song to start your singing career with.  If I can do it, anybody can!  This is the first song I sang in public.  I have belted it out at a bunch of jobs.  I have yet to be pelted with any rotten fruit or vegetables, but never say never.  Don't stress over it. Have fun!

Re: Singing Advice....

What about if you can sing but don't like the sound of your voice (and have had other people tell you your voice sounds bad)?

I'd say your in the wrong frame of mind to put yourself infront of people... You have to have a little confidence, I've always been put down about my singing by my parents an ex-girlfriend the list goes on, but what you have to understand is that if your singing.. A.) You do it to have fun B.) Not everyone has the same tastes C.) Not everyone can sing with a massive range...

At the end of the day you have to say bugger them and just do it to please yourself. You cant please everyone, my parents always say it still, yet everyweek I will go out do a gig get a compliment or sometimes a criticism. Rinse and repeat. I think in this game you have to be thick skinned because you really wont please everyone (especially in these days of manufactured pop bands, xfactor and no talent contests). The only real criticism I'll listen to is off muso's known to me in the area, or people who are actually constructive and give me a reason why / a suggestion of how to improve.

The only advice to that I guess is to be thick skinned and ask how to improve...

Not saying that if you cant sing people wont have a go but if you truly believe you can and you HAVE listened to yourself and dont think its that bad or what not..

However there is alot of people out there who do sound quite bad but have so much confidence it amazes me at times :x.

Re: Singing Advice....

Remember, Bob Dylan didn't have a voice worth a darn, and he's one of the greatest artists ever. So your voice doesn't have to be that good as long as it is memorable.

Re: Singing Advice....

I started singing only because I could find anyone to record the vocals on my recordings. Then I started singing harmony parts in the band I was in.  Then They asked me to sing a few lead parts.  Then I started a band and was the lead singer.

I guess my point is go find a place... mine was the car... where you can turn up the music and you can sing along. Sing your favorite songs a hundred times. If you really are bad try some lessons maybe.

Use an acoustic when you practice singing and playing. Dont focus on leads. That will come. Dont play songs with complicated riffs either because thats a challenge.

Let me assure you that singing doesnt suddenly open doors. You need to be good at both for it to matter. And if you can find a partner who can sing then you can still have as much input as you need.

A few guitar players with clear control over the bands they are in,
Keith Richards
Mike Campbell
Jimmy Page
Rich Robinson

You dont have to sing to have a say in the band.

Funny thing Chris.  I distinctly remember a night in a club when 2 of my good friends rushed the stage to tell me I REALLY shouldn't sing, while the drunks were on their feet, stomping, clapping and cheering for the first time that night.

I told them to turn around.  I guess I sold it.  It was blues.

Bruce Springstein comes to mind as well.

Showed them. I guess they were reminded that those that can't play, criticize. lol
