I'd say your in the wrong frame of mind to put yourself infront of people... You have to have a little confidence, I've always been put down about my singing by my parents an ex-girlfriend the list goes on, but what you have to understand is that if your singing.. A.) You do it to have fun B.) Not everyone has the same tastes C.) Not everyone can sing with a massive range...
At the end of the day you have to say bugger them and just do it to please yourself. You cant please everyone, my parents always say it still, yet everyweek I will go out do a gig get a compliment or sometimes a criticism. Rinse and repeat. I think in this game you have to be thick skinned because you really wont please everyone (especially in these days of manufactured pop bands, xfactor and no talent contests). The only real criticism I'll listen to is off muso's known to me in the area, or people who are actually constructive and give me a reason why / a suggestion of how to improve.
The only advice to that I guess is to be thick skinned and ask how to improve...
Not saying that if you cant sing people wont have a go but if you truly believe you can and you HAVE listened to yourself and dont think its that bad or what not..
However there is alot of people out there who do sound quite bad but have so much confidence it amazes me at times :x.
