Topic: Southampton Guildhall show

My 6th Joe show and I have to say even better than the RAH in some respects... certainly for a venue with a really high ceiling and huge stone walls it didn't pose too much of a threat to the sound man, whom it must be said did a cracking job.  Nice to hear 'Had to Cry Today' again in the set... and yet again Mountain Time blew the roof off the place...I never get tired of that epic tune.  The acoustic interlude was as amazing as ever- can Joe play any faster? Every time I see him he gets more fleet fingered- almost a flamenco tinged workout is the best description...  Thanks to my buddy Marty for doing a sterling job driving the 140 odd mile round trip in filthy weather... he also had a press pass to photograph the first three songs & said he probably captured his best photos yet thanks to the excellent lighting... can't wait to see those...:D:D:D

Thanks Joe for another amazing night...!

This don't look like no express way to me...

Re: Southampton Guildhall show

It was my 5th show and same with me, best ive seen of Joe, better for me too than the RAH as I was in the gods and the sound wasnt good up there, it was great to hear some older songs, the band were hot. and for me just to see bogie playing as the Only drummer was awesome!!.
I though the support band were good I only caught 3 songs due to traffic.... anyone know thier name?

Let there be drums......and there was drums

Re: Southampton Guildhall show

Likewise, I thought this was far and away the best of the five shows I've been to.  I loved the RAH show and it was a great occasion for Joe, but Southampton was a great performance FROM Joe.  He looked like he was thoroughly enjoying himself on stage.

I got the first three songs in the photo pit and, although I'm at work and haven't had chance to download the pics yet,  the lighting was such that I think they'll have come out pretty well.  I'll post them here as soon as I can.

The support was, I think, Sandi Thom.  Unfortunately, we spent so long driving round in ever increasing circles looking for somewhere to park that we missed her/them.

Marty

Re: Southampton Guildhall show

Yes that's right,, the support was Sandi Thom and very good she was too. She has a fine voice and, wisely when opening for a guitar legend, the songs were heavy on the vocals with the guitars more in the background. She made a point of thanking Joe for helping her in her career over the last year too.

I didn't meet any of the guys who posted above (maybe next time) but it was another of those great occasions when the Bonabuddies met up. I was wandering past the Guildhall earlier on and saw Michael with LynB and Laurence hanging around waiting to see if they could catch Joe after his Blues in Schools afternoon. Then I went off for the pub meet and was joined by Maggie, Lydia and their friend Tricia (by the happy look on her face after the show I reckon she might be a convert) and then by Devonjohn who we established had been sitting a few seats away from me at the RAH.

John and I both had tickets for seats in the balcony so we stayed on at the pub for a bit while the others went to off to queue for standing. When we got to the Guildhall there was a bit of discussion about John's photo pass but he got it OK.. At that point I realised we'd been ushered past the balcony entrance and were in the main hall. LUCKY! cool  The balcony was a long, long way from the stage. Lucky too that, although we weren't by any means early, the crowd was only a few rows deep from the barrier. So we parked ourselves in a good spot stage left a couple of rows behind Maggie and co. At the interval, people came and went so I was happily able to join them while John went off to the pit to set up his camera.

Joe stormed the place! The crowd went nuts and the cheers and applause after each song didn't let up all evening. I don't know if Joe and the band got off on this or if they were just on top of their form but the were electric. I was enjoying myself too much to remember the set list but hopefully someone (Michael?) got one? As far as I can tell the set was similar to recent shows. Bridge To Better Days was a stand out song for me as it's one of my favourites and from the first JB album I ever bought. The encores nearly brought the roof down. Just Got Paid was Joe at his showman best and a thrilling way to end the evening.

Joe brought back Sandi Thom for the curtain call which I thought was a nice touch. Despite my dreadful 1½  drive back in the lashing rain I was still on a high from the show when I got home which tells you how much Joe can affect you. Superb.

Re: Southampton Guildhall show

My fourth JB gig including RAH

Joe if you read this all I can is WOW this show put the RAH to shame thank the guys for the excellent sound and lighting. And we are looking forward to the Bournemouth gig already. How about the Anvil at basingstoke the acoustics are superb??

Sandi was absolutely stunning and a superb support. I am sure I saw Marcus Bonfantti there (another support from last year).

Iam fairly new to JB (the last year and a bit) but ill always get tickets for the shows.

We were 15 feet from the front and absolutely loved it. we could've got closer but hey we were happy

Loved Sloe gin, happier times (a pertinent song for me) bridge to better days. But to be honest loved everything which was played and a two hour set to boot.

Joe deserves every credit and needs to get recognised outside planet rock. the BBc know he exists but there not interested for radio WHY oh why do we have to put up with the manufactured pop when talent like Joes goes unnoticed. We all know Joe worked hard to get where he is.

Keep on rockin Joe

Max

Re: Southampton Guildhall show

I totally agree it was a great show the sound and lighting were spot on.

Joe and the guys looked as if they were really enjoying the show.  I think the crowd really helped to make it a great night, there was a real buzz in the crowd with everyone showing their appreciation of Joe.

Yeah that was a really nice touch by Joe getting Sandi back on at the end.

Only Joe and band can do the seemingly impossible - get better with each show! big_smile

Lord knows how good he is going to be next year with Black Rock and all...

If only I could book Joe tickets for the next forty years!

Re: Southampton Guildhall show

Just wanted to add my thanks to Joe & the band for another terrific gig (only my third, but this time got some brill photos - when I wasn't totally mesmerised).  Thanks also to Michael, Lyn & Co who shared their enthusiasm and anecdotes of Joe with me; it was great chatting with you.  Hope to see you down at the front again in Bournemouth.

When it all comes together, it's scary good. Stoked for the new songs. I'm adding Joe show in England to my must do list, I miss you all already!!!!    Cathy

The Great Flood is up there with Sloe Gin for me now. TGF never made an immediate impact with me when I first heard it, but it's a real grower and seems to tweak my heartstrings a little tighter with each new listen. Real powerful stuff.

You got me goin' with this "song/thingy" Michael - should we expect an instrumental perhaps?
I guess the guys are bound to start dropping in a couple of Black Rock songs pre-release like they did with TBOJH.
Can't wait!

Re: Southampton Guildhall show

Just when you think it can't get any better ... Joe cranks it up to another level.   A great crowd, great atmosphere, sound quality just perfect (unlike some other gigs I've experienced at the Guildhall) and meeting up with Bonabuddies Michael, Sheri-Ann (sp?), David, Maggie, Lydia, Trisha, Jacquelyn, Doug ...... I've been buzzing for the past couple of days and only just come down to earth again  smile  Nice to see some old Mr Kyps faces in the crowd too!

What I love about seeing this man, this band, is his ability to amaze me every time with something fresh, like the new beginning to "Sloe Gin" or the end solo on "If Heartaches" and little changes here and there in "Woke up Dreaming".   I look forward to being amazed again next May.  Bravo Joe.

This was my 5th Joe concert.

I am pleased to say i was able to take lots of really great clear well focused and exposed photos from the Pit and I was glad I stayed still in the pit in a place I knew I was bound to get good shots of Joe in slight side profile with guitar pointed away but close up on the theramin too.

Great venue. I had heard that the sound was not good - but for me this was the best sound since Colston Hall and better than RAH for not being so loud.

Joe looked so relaxed and smiled quite a bit as well as interacting with the crowd. "We are reserved English remember" someone with an amazingly powerful voice said - "I know" said Joe pausing mid solo briefly to laugh.

You might want to check out the photo I took of the "fans"!
