Forgot Eric Gales ,Sean Chambers,Doyle Bramhall II, Van Wilks, There really alot of great players on indepent labels or by themselves.
I keep on thinking of others there are so many Nuno Mindelis brilliant brazilian blues guitarist who has recorded with double trouble.
I met Carl in Malibu last May. He is a friend of Joe's. He got up and jammed. There might be a recording of that show floating around. Malibu Inn May 26th 2006.
I know I'm biased but Joe schoolled him.
He's a bit more along the lines of Eric Johnson with his scales. He wasn't playing live on those first two clips...probably trying to save tape on the video shoot.
If for some reason you don't know these guys well I'd recommend
Steve Gaines (Skynyrd...."one more from the road" and "street survivors" albums).
John Hall (former Orleans frontman) His debut album from 1977 is terrific if you can find it. Also...Orleans did their for album for ABC Dot Records and that has some great playing on it by John...he's very lyrical with his playing...also plays slide well. The Orleans stuff once they had hits is much more commercial but there's still some fine work on "Waking And Dreaming"..that's the album Still The One was from. The title cut has some particularly nice stuff. John just got elected to Congress...go figure!
Here in Nashville one of the hot pickers (and there are MANY) is Johnny Hiland. This dude is an amazing player...especially in the Albert Lee/Style of chicken pickin'
Glad to see someone mentioned Van Wilks already, fantastic player, great person. Have been a fan of Van's since seeing, and meeting him when he opened up for ZZ Top in 1980. Too bad his 'Bombay Tears' album is long out of print, some excellent guitar work on there in more of a hard rock direction than his blues based releases.
Here's another one who is certainly highly recommended:
Bugs Henderson
None other than Jimmy Page was so impressed by his playing that he got ahold of Bugs and asked if he could send his entire catalog. Dallas guitar legend for sure, and very unheralded.
Also:
Mason Ruffner
Also, anybody here have Johnny Gales' 'Gale Force' album?
Great blues/rock album, one of the best of the 90's in my opinion, and as far as I know the only one he ever put out. If you like your blues rockin' I'd recommend seeking this one out. Fantastic guitarist, with an inspired choice of vocalists, including Tommy Farese, who now tours and has recorded with The Trans Siberian Orchestra.
How about Howard Leese of Heart. Howard is playing with Paul Rogers now. Dont let Hearts top 40 hits fool you. This guy can really play when he wants to!!

See I have watched Carl's instructional video many many times and it is probably the very best INSTRUCTIONAL for rock I have ever seen. Carl is a well spoken and superior teacher. His linear approach is far more difficult to master and perform than the usual pentatonic box patterns we all know and love. These lines do noy however appeal to everyones ears.
Doubt if Joe would think he "schooled" Carl... different animals......
No Joe has much respect for Carl. I was impressed he is with Supertramp. Played on albums and toured with them for a few years. I was an old Supertramp fan.
Carl is one of those think outside of the box guys like Eric Johnson. When it comes to playing the blues he out thought it. Not that he isn't a monster player he was like a kid with ADD trying to fit every trick and note in the three minutes he soloed during Tap an Angel. During You Upset Me he just lost the blues feel.
What became apparant when listening to them both. Joe has a smoother style more melodic with occasional flurries. Those that have never seen Joe jam with somebody would say he is more rehearsed on his songs.
I have seen him jam in a variety of situations. He sounds like he has been woodsheding every solo for two weeks when I know he was just ripping them out of his head.
Carl was just a little dijointed in my opinion.
Yeah great to see Van Wilks mentioned , he is so underated , a fine fine master of southern boogie rock/blues.
There ARE so many out there now playing a variety of blues tinged with rock ... so many to track down and check out and the vast array of listeners on here with such such good taste. CD collection is gonna grow ........ wish some of those guys like KWS , Philip sayce , Albert cummings
Chris duarte , Eric sardinas , Shane henry , Monster Mike welch , Jonny lang , Sean Chambers would pack there Guitars in the case and jump on a plane and come and tear up Europe
Thanks David for your list gonna be checkin' out them all and the others posted on this list , thanks all
Ps .....Albert Cummings is my No 2 he is very very good indeedy
Michael
Albet cummings may have to be my #2 it is so hard to choose
Bob Zabek ...... wow keep an eye on that guy , has he got any cd's out or anything............... he's fast
Thanks Bizazz
