Topic: Ancienne Belgique, Brussels, Nov 25th

Well, I don't know where to begin, there's so much to say...

I decided to be there early so I could maybe come across Joe near the venue. But I didn't know I would actually go inside and meet him (Yes, Joe, that's what we call a meet and greet). It was a bit awkward at first but I felt more confident as the time went by, I even risked a joke about Belgian beers (I hope it wasn't too bad, I didn't really know what I was saying lol). There were also other people from this forum, and it was a pleasure to meet them.

Now, the show itself: fantastic, wonderful, marvelous, etc. (I miss superlatives)

I was in first row and I made some pics, I will upload them tomorrow 'cause I feel a bit tired now (it's 2:30 in the morning here). I also made some videos but the sound is crappy, really crappy. I think it was too loud for my phone's mic.

I managed to get the setlist that was lying at Joe's feet so you'll know what he played, don't worry! wink

And here it is:

The Ballad of John Henry
Last Kiss
So Many Roads
So It's Like That
If Heartaches Were Nickels
Further On Up The Road
Sloe Gin
Lonesome Road Blues
Happier Times
Had To Cry Today
Bridge To Better Days
The Great Flood
Woke Up Dreaming (stunning!)
Mountain Time
- Encore -
Ball Peen Hammer (with the sweet MusicMan double-neck 12/6)
Jus Got Paid (they forgot a "t" on the setlist)

Ok, I couldn't wait, here are some pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/plutux/set … 877583832/
I made more but they aren't good at all...

And here's a video of Woke Up Dreaming (not the full song, sorry): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsuHy8FJQZM

Not too shabby for a first timer, eh? Joe Bonamassa and Co. and the entire production certainly inspire to take video, crappy sound or not (the cell phones just aren't really good at it you can get lucky sometimes but...still pictures are maybe their forte) and photo snapping like crazy.  And don't worry, sometimes you may want to come down a little bit to get it out  here in the reviews the way you'd like...but you probably won't feel it is a totally sufficient description.  Even peoples like myself, even Libby and Michael-even in his effective efficacious eloquence and lively, lovely loquacious linguistic infusions of written pyrotechnical adventures detailed as if painting a classic oil on velvet would say we don't come close to justice often-excepting the principle enjoyment and excitement parts (Libby's got a real knack too cool).  Just give it up to us is all we ask! ESPECIALLY first time experiences-they rate VERY HIGH HIGH HIGH and are savored with you by many!

Went with my 11 year old son to last night's gig. We got as close to the stage as we could and some kind people let him go right up front (thanks guys).
We saw Joe at the Peer festival for the first time and my son is now Joe's biggest fan!
A great show and a real inspiration to a young guitarist.
The evening was made extra special when Bogie gave my son one of his drumsticks!

Re: Ancienne Belgique, Brussels, Nov 25th

Hi everyone!

A short review of my first (but definately not last) bonamassa-gig:

Highlights of the show (to me and hopefully many others)

1) Sloe gin: the intro solo, there is so much feeling in it and everybody tapped straight into it. You could here a pin drop. During the entire song the people were mesmerized. For sure THE highlight of the gig.

2) Just got paid that went into Led Zep: whether you play guitar or not, everyone immediately sees that was some great guitar playing. damn! The sounds he was able to drag out of his guitar. Fantastic.

3) If heartaches were nickles (a personal favorite): just love that solo, an all time favorite

4) Acoustic guitar showcasing: speed, virtuosity and a lot of different styles (jazz, blues, flamenco and more). An instrumental break that impressed the entire room.

So there you have it: my four highlights. Great show, great songs, great band.

Some trivia:
* I kinda missed an intro to the gig. All of the sudden he was there. No dimming of houselights, no nice intro that builds some anticipation. But anyway, maybe I'm just nitpicking. Not every band has to storm the stage right after 'the ecstasy of gold' was played I guess. smile

* to those who were there: Was I the only one who enjoyed the enthousiastic fan who stood on the first balkony on the right hand side of the stage (just above the stage, near where the boxes hanged from the ceiling). He was giving two major thumbs up towards Joe during the entire show. He was happy like a child smile
Maybe he's even on this forum?

Anyway, that's it for me.

bye!

(thanx for posting setlist btw)
(if theres any sort of bootleg of the show out here, i'd love to have a copy smile )

I don't know, just the right amount of luck, and being there early helped a lot I think smile

Lennert, I totally agree with your highlights. He played the best version of Sloe Gin I've heard so far. I posted a short video of Woke Up Dreaming on Youtube, the sound isn't so bad on this one, check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsuHy8FJQZM

ncl, I've seen your son too, he wasn't far from me, maybe 2 or 3 people between us. I'm really happy for him smile

Oh, and I forgot to talk about the negative side of the show, but I think I have to do it to be fully honest: it was a bit too short big_smile

I agree, we may not comment on every thread, but also the reviews are appriecated! smile

Re: Ancienne Belgique, Brussels, Nov 25th

For me as well, it was a first timer...I've been a fan of Joe since a couple of months. After listening to some of his stuff on the net I went out to buy The Ballad of John Henry...the rest, as they say, is history. I was so impressed with this music that I made everyone in my band listen to the CD, and there you go: we were all (except our drummer) present in AB...

Joe and the rest of the band (let's not forget them cause they are GOOD!) blew me away .... When I left AB they were loading up the tour bus and -being the always quiet Belgian I am- I didn't want to bother Joe by asking for an autograph on my newly acquired Sloe Gin CD...damn... apparently, one of my band members (he's from Holland, which explains a lot) who left somewhat later did venture to the bus and got his autograph ... double damn ....

Hopefully one day he'll come back to Belgium so I can still try my luck (I might even drag my Gibson along to get it autographed .... how cool would that be!)

Summary of the gig: truly amazing, not only Joe, but also the other musicians ... drums, bass, keyboards... each and every single one sublime ... and the venue ... well, fantastic acoustic, fantastic looks, intimate enough ... it doesn't get any better!
