Ocean EFX Texas Deuce is a fantastic pedal that is far more useable than the TS808 or the Fulltone.
The boost is great and can be used seperately.

I listened to some samples and must say I'm intrigued by that pedal. Will have to try one one of these days. I thought of getting another Fulldrive for a second smaller pedalboard but this might be an alternative.

Get the Texas Deuce.  You will not be disappointed. Its a great pedal. It sounds very similar to the Fulltone Fulldrive and the boost is seperate rather than just more gain like the fulltone. www.oceanefx.com

Corby is a great guy and very easy to work with. His vintage Echo is to die for. I use it all the time.

Have you tried the Pearl Drive? How does that compare to the Texas Deuce? I see it does not have a boost function. I listened to the sound samples but would love to hear more opinions.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

Worth trying the T-Rex Moller which is pretty much a Tubescreamer with a blend function (so you can blend it with your clean tone) and a boost. I also really like the Boss Blues Driver with the Keeley Phat mod (the stock pedal is too harsh) and the Monte Allums modded Boss SD-1.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

the ts-808 is one of my favorite pedals of all time......freaking awesome.

my buddy got one of the keeley modded ts-808's....we did a side by side comparison and for my money i liked the stock one a little better to my ears.

if you are interested in checking out another option (although you cannot go wrong with the ts-808) i would recommend checking out the xotic bb preamp.  another great pedal to my ears.

Funny you should mention the stock vs. modded thing.  I've found that I liked the stock ones more as well.  Most of the mods take the midrange out and boost the lows a bit for a more "transparent" sound.  To me that what clean boosts are for.  In my mind, a tubescreamer is great because of the color it adds to the sound.  It offers a lot of amplifiers much needed midrange all the while taming the often boomier bass frequencies.  Gives it a great cranked sound without all the volume and always cuts through! cool

You don't need an overdrive pedal for blues.......
John Lee Hooker didn't have no freakin overdrive pedal wink

But if you really need a pedal , a fuzz face will do it all

I bought the Texas Deuce and the Pearl Drive and they were both on my board for awile.  Without insulting Corby...

The Texas Deuce is a Tubescreamer type overdrive with an awsome clean boost added. Its a seperate boost so you can use it alone if needed. Very versital. Great articulation, more than enough overdrive, and the boost just adds to the excitement.  I LOVE this pedal and I use it as my main Lead Tone.

The Pearl Drive is a Fulltone OCD like overdrive. It is more metallic sounding, although dont take this as a bad thing it sounds better than the OCD.  More organic than the OCD for sure. Lots of gain.  It can be a creamy pedal depending on your amp and setup.   The OCD has more gain on tap but the Pearl sounds better for what it has. Unless you play metal you should never need more gain than the Pearl Drive.
I returned the Pearl to get the Vintage Echo, not because I didnt like the pedal but because I needed a ECHO.  And I wanted a delay pedal so I returned the Pearl and got the echo from Corby.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

Thanks for the detailed response. It seems the Texas Deuce is the one for me. I'll definitely try that one out.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

This forum really praises the Fulltone Fulldrive 2... I'll probably have to buy one.
I had a tube screamer TS9, but I could get a "ninja boost" (clean boost) out of my Rivera just fine. I just never saw a need to hook up that pedal.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

I have a fulltone fulldrive 2, never use it.  the best answer is to put your money into a really good amp, drive it hard and control your overdrive with the guitars volume knob.  I'm not trying to be snooty, but it all starts with a great amp, all the rest is window dressing.  good luck.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

I mostly like the Fulldrive 2 when I have to use cleaner Fender type amps.  If the amp has a good crunch channel I usually go with that and a light clean boost for solos.  I personally have a love for the Fulldrive 2 because I can get "my tone" on just about any amp with that pedal.  It's so darn tweakable and offers so many gain possibilities that it's the perfect pedal on your board if you had to choose just one.  We are blessed because there is such a large assortment of overdrive units available today.  We have all become very very spoiled!  This is truely the Golden Age for guitar tone!

I agree there's nothing like the tone of overdriven power tubes. Unfortunately in my case, the other band members are so sensitive to the "loud" guitar player that I can hardly ever turn up the amp to that kind of volume. Even my 18 watter is too loud for them (and to be honest it is loud) and yes, I do use the guitar's volume knob a lot. So a good OD pedal is the only way to go.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

my personal best overdrive for blues is : SECRET EFX secret-1 {similar to klon centaur but it's on another planet}
i use secret-1 with ANALOG MAN king of tone ... and the result it's very great !!! in alternative use with robert keleey time machine boost !!!

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

I've used a a lot of OD pedals. Everybody has their own sound in their head, but what I feel is my tone, is use of one or multiple of the following OD pedals:

Dumkudo and SOV-2 (these two are my bread and butter).  You can also get some nice tones for a cheaper price from Fulltone Mosfet II, I prefer this over the Tubscreamer, though the re-issue I have is not bad, TS seems to add it's own color.  SOV-2 is the best pedal for not adding color IMO, but some might feel it doesn't provide enough OD...fine line. Also, some pedals work better with a Les paul than a Strat.
