Joe uses a stock one . It's suppose to be a 100% accurate recreation of the old ones. If it is good enough for Joe, Eric Johnson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and about every other guitar legend it's good enough for me! I've heard some modded tubescreamers and they didn't sound worlds different or better from the stock versions.
To be honest, for the money I would check out the Fulltone Fulldrive 2. It can do the tubescreamer thing all day and has the added "boost" section for even more sustain. Great blues pedal IMO.
