Topic: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

Hi, Looking for a pedal that can fatten up my tone for lead, looking for a boost,  i dont need massive gain or fizz. Does any forum members have any experience with the Bluesberry Hotcake or a TS 808. Any advice would be very welcome. I play a Marshall Vintage Modern using a Les Paul, Tele and Strat. Mark.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

The TS808 is the quintessential blues overdrive pedal. smile

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

Is the standard ts808 good or is there need to get the Keeley modded version.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

I don't know how many of our compariots have tried it, but the Bluesberry Hotcake is a great pedal IMHO. Made in New Zealand by Crowther Audio they are hand built and I love mine. Not the cheapest box around, but a great pedal. Check out the reviews on Harmony Central

Bought mine in Great Britain while visting relatives and cruising London on Denmark Street.

Sent an email at one point to Paul Crowther with a question and got a reply very quickly. Great guy and wonderful products.

Nothin' but the Blues

CHECK OUT
the PROVIDENCE STAMPEDE SOV-2 overdrive pedal totally transparent gives the pure sound of the amp with no coloration , but adds lovely smooth distortion ok cost £200 but I got rid of carl martin HDB and tubescreamer to fund  the SOV-2 goodbye and good riddance this pedal is exceptional , kind of like  a KLON CENTUAR but better.
Matt Schofield Put me onto this pedal . exactly what a pedal should do when used with a good amp !!!!

"Everybody's entitled to my opinion. wink

Joe uses a stock one wink .  It's suppose to be a 100% accurate recreation of the old ones.  If it is good enough for Joe, Eric Johnson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and about every other guitar legend it's good enough for me!  I've heard some modded tubescreamers and they didn't sound worlds different or better from the stock versions.

To be honest, for the money I would check out the Fulltone Fulldrive 2.  It can do the tubescreamer thing all day and has the added "boost" section for even more sustain.  Great blues pedal IMO.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record: Fulltone Fulldrive 2.

i like the tim.  i've found some good tones when it's turned up cool

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

I have tried a bunch; the Tubescreamer is the king; however, the Boss Blues Driver is a good pedal as well.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

I am obsessed with the Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde.  Every time I play a gig people ask me how I got my overdrive sounds.  I use a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe or '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue, so I  depend on pedals out front for overdrive.  One side of the pedal is similar to an Ibanez Tube Screamer with a few more controls for range.  The other half is a heavy distortion that can conjure up some Marshall style tones.  I like to use them both for my lead sound, and they have a very powerful, creamy vibe when mixed.  Sounds great with my Strat, 335 and Kopp Betty Swing hollowbody archtop.

I just realized you actually were interested in a boost.  Check out the Xotic RC Booster, its a great clear clean boost that works well with another overdrive medal.  Xotic also makes the AC Booster, which has more gain, and the BB Preamp which has even more gain.  Check out the youtube demo videos with Josh Smith to hear what these things can do.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

Fulltone Fulldrive is fantastic.

Ocean EFX Texas Deuce is a fantastic pedal that is far more useable than the TS808 or the Fulltone.
The boost is great and can be used seperately.

I use both of these on my board so I am partial to them.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

the boss blues driver is a very good pedal

Gear;
Guitars - Fender lite Ash Strat w/Seymore Duncan single coils, Gretsch Electromatic, Ibanez Electro-Acoustic, Westfeild Explorer.
Amp- Peavy Rage 158
Pedals - Behringher Overdrive, Chorus & Delay

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

I'm waiting on a Brent Mason Hotwired Pedal from Wampler at the moment. I'm hoping it will be with me any day. I will post again and tell you what it is like. I find the people at Wampler brilliant, I asked if they could get Brent Mason to sign the pedal which they have arranged and he also sent a signed photo which was brilliant of him.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

I use a Monte Allums modded Boss SD-1 to boost my Silver Jubilee and am very happy with it.  The mod smooths it out a huge amount and gets rid of the "fizzy" overtone that the pedal had pre-mod.  Highly recommended.

Re: Best Overdrive pedal for Blues.

Fulltone OCD
Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive (a TS808 with a blendable clean boost)
