Topic: Les Paul 60's neck

Hey Everyone....

I have been in a bit of a pickle here...I have a Gold Top Traditional and she sounds so sweet.  But I am having trouble with my left hand.  No matter how many times I play a week, after an hour or so of playing it, my hand cramps up (smaller hands).  I end up playing my Strat for the rest of the time.  Now I don't mind playing the Strat.  As a matter of fact, we are working out our set list so that I use the Strat for about half the songs.  But there are nights I just don't feel like either playing the Strat or carrying it to rehearsals.

Having said all of that, I wanted to know from those who have experience or has tried the 1960 re-issue with the 60's slim neck, what you thought of the neck.
Would the thinner neck be more suitable for my smaller hands and help with the cramping?
I don't have a cramping issue when I play the Strat all night....but I LOVE Les Pauls....and I'd rather play the LP.

Thanks,
Barry

Re: Les Paul 60's neck

I have a Classic Antique LP with the 60's Slim Taper neck. I also have smaller hands, which I guess is why I have always liked the Tele's and Strat's. The Slim neck may provide some relief, but I would suggest that you visit a local shop and try it out. Of course, proper setup is important too as I am sure you know.

The 50's style necks are kind of unfortable for me, but many players like the fatter neck. You have to try it out. The other thing that comes to mind is the tendency of some players to hold the neck in a kind of death grip, which may lead to cramps after a period of time, but in your case in really sounds like the neck profile is contributing.

Try out the 60's neck and let us know what you think.

Nothin' but the Blues

Re: Les Paul 60's neck

You need to strengthen your hand(s) ie; fingers, wrist and forearms. There's many devices out there that can help. The ones that help you work each individual finger would be the best. You can change guitars and neck profiles all day long but if you don't have the strength and dexterity, your fighting a losing battle.

Re: Les Paul 60's neck

The Traditional Pro comes with a 60's profile neck as well. I love it. In my case it's that I'm getting a bit of arthritis in the joints and the 60's profile is more comfortable.

Also, next time you get a bad case of GAS check out a Rickenbacker 650. They've discontinued the Sierra and Dakota models (but they can still be found). The Colorado continues in production. The difference is that the Colorado has a painted body where the others had a Tung Oli finished walnut body. They come with humbuckers and separate volume and tone controls for each pup. Other Ricks have very thin necks so limits bending options where the 650 is a bit wider. Street price is about the same as for an American Strat.

Major Tom to ground control...

Re: Les Paul 60's neck

Along with the working out the fingers make sure you strech them and warm the up really good before you begin.  The 60's neck is small but not that much smaller.  I would say its still thicker then a standard C from a Strat.

Re: Les Paul 60's neck

I have smaller hands to and also have a Traditional Plus. I was worried about the neck and was hell bent on getting the 60's slim neck. But after I played some I realised there isn't huge difference in the necks and perfered the Traditional neck. I have some arthrius in my right hand not the left but the neck was never an issue, working out hand strenthing has help with cramping, try getting the book 30 day guitar work out and see if that doesn't help you after a few weeks.

Re: Les Paul 60's neck

My next LP (hopefully there will be one) will either be an early 70's vintage one or a reissue with a 60's neck
