Topic: Jim Weider's ProJECT PERCoLAToR

Jim Weider's name came up in the Danny Gatton RIP thread, and rather than highjack that one, I thought I'd start a new one.  Jim deserves his own thread anyway!

Yes, Jim Weider is one to check out for sure.  Most people don't know his name, but he was with The Band for 15 years, replacing Robbie Robertson.  His current band is ProJECT PERCoLAToR and I pimp them out wherever I can.  They put out a new CD a few months ago called Pulse... lots of great songs on there.  Here's a link to his website, where you can read more about him and who all he's played with, and you can purchase Pulse:
http://www.jimweider.com/page.asp?pageid=1

Here are 2 links to some excellent recordings my taper friend made earlier this year, both soundboard/Schoeps matrixes.  At Jim's request, he didn't upload these til after the new CD was released because a lot of the new songs were played.  I was at the 2nd show, so I can say firsthand that Jim and his band are awesome!

At those links, you can either download or just listen online.  And if anybody so desires, I can dig up some of his older Jim Weider recordings too.  They are all of the same high quality... he's a top-notch taper.

Re: Jim Weider's ProJECT PERCoLAToR

Vikki,

I checked out some of Jim Weider's music and couldn't help but wonder how he landed with The Band.  The guy's way good.  Haven't had time to do a decent investigation, but will.  I did manage to get his song, "No Exit Strategy", which reminds me a little of Satriani and Joe B.  Now I've got to go back a check out the Band records with him.  Are there any vocals on his solo stuff?

Re: Jim Weider's ProJECT PERCoLAToR

Curby, thanks for checking out Jim Weider!  He has never reminded me of either of those Joes, or anybody else for that matter really, but he IS good.  I always want to put him in the "underrated guitarists" category, but it's actually more like "unknown"... once people hear him, they usually ackowledge his abilities.  No vocals on his ProJECT PERCoLAToR material... which usually isn't my thing, as I'm normally a lyric person... but I like playing it as background music when I'm concentrating on other things, or when I want to just relax or fall asleep.

My friend recently uploaded a 2007 show that DOES have vocals... it's labeled as a ProJECT PERCoLAToR show, but apparently it's actually a Jim Weider Band show, according to the comment section (Jerry C is a huge fan and should know) and also judging by the band line-up.  If you'd like to check out that band as a comparison, here ya go...
*link removed*

There's a bunch more ProJECT PERCoLAToR shows I could link you to, but here's one that stands out... it's shorter than some, being a fest, but they played their best "not to be missed" songs.  No soundboard on this one, but it's a 4-source matrix... sounds great!***  If you listen to the intro, it says Jim classifies the group as a "groove rock jam band"... I'd say that describes them pretty well.  A little funky.  A little jazzy too, but not too much for my taste... there's still always a steady beat there to groove to.  Anyway, check it out...

***Correction: There IS a soundboard feed on there, plus 3 different sets of mics.

Re: Jim Weider's ProJECT PERCoLAToR

After re-listening to his music I'm even more impressed with his skill playing a guitar.  I still stand by my first impression of "No Exit Strategy" having a Joe/Rockpalast flavor to it, but I definitely agree that Jim Weider has his own unique sound.  Btw, his rhythm section is equally fantastic.  I did find a few songs of his with vocals that are pretty good, but the Jam songs are the ones that stand out.  I really like the songs "Troll" and "Many Rivers to Cross".
It's posts like yours, Vikki, that makes this such a great site.  Thanks for the links too!

Re: Jim Weider's ProJECT PERCoLAToR

Why thank you... and you are quite welcome!  I'm just happy someone is checking him out.  Has anyone else?  I bet Joe is familiar with him, especially since they're both from NY state.

After giving it another listen, I guess I'll have to agree that "No Exit Strategy" does have a bit of a JB flavor to it, kinda.  I'm not familiar with "Many Rivers To Cross" and couldn't find it after searching a bunch of shows on Archive... but interestingly enough, in my searching I discovered that ProJECT PERCoLAToR (with an old line-up) opened for The Machine (my favorite Pink Floyd tribute, of course) on NYE 2005 in Albany NY.  I also saw a glowing comment from a self-described Danny Gatton fan.

You're right, the rest of his band is very talented too.  I know that drummer Rodney Holmes and guitarist Mitch Stein both played in Steve Kimock's band at one time (another one to check out if you're not familiar).  Also Rodney Holmes toured with the Santana Band, and he was with them when they recorded their album Supernatural... think "Smooth" with Rob Thomas.

Here's Jim Weider's Wiki entry... pretty short and needs updating, but you might find something of interest there... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Weider

I'm waiting for Rocket to chime in here, as he's the one who originally brought him up in the Danny Gatton thread (thank you very much). wink

Re: Jim Weider's ProJECT PERCoLAToR

***Correction to my 2nd post in this thread, regarding that Milford Music Fest show I linked to... there IS a soundboard feed on there... soundboard plus 3 different sets of mics... I hadn't noticed exactly what source #3 was before, til I just now noticed "soundboard" was one of his keywords on that upload.  My bad. tongue  But anyway, it sure does sound GOOD... listening to it again now! cool

Re: Jim Weider's ProJECT PERCoLAToR

I also just removed the link to the 2007 Jim Weider Band show, the one with vocals.  Even though it's my friend Keith's recording, I found out he is not the one who recently uploaded it to Archive, and in fact Jim had specifically asked him NOT to, for several reasons.  First of all, it wasn't a rehearsed gig... they all just kinda got together that night to play.  Second, the venue owner (he also sings The Weight at this show) wouldn't allow even Jim himself to record, so this was a stealth job from back by the bar (at Jim's request, hehe).  Keith says it doesn't matter anymore, as that venue is now out of business anyway, plus the show's been out there since it happened (just not on Archive til 2 weeks ago)... all the same, I figure I shouldn't encourage people to listen to a show that Jim himself didn't want uploaded.  It's still out there though, if anybody really wants to find it. wink

Re: Jim Weider's ProJECT PERCoLAToR

Your mention of Steve Kimock rang a bell - I've got his excellent  Eudemonic album.  The further I get into Mr. Weider the more I understand your enthusiasm.  Recently I've been listening to alot of Jam Bands of different genres for the same reason as you - the songs relax me and are darn good to boot.  I don't know your personal likes, but here are three Jam songs I like:
Jupiter Coyote - "Willow" - I just love the tone on John Felty's guitar.  One of my fave songs of late.
Soulhat - "Stink Pot" - Somewhat similar guitar style to Jim Weider.
Leftover Salmon - "Highway Song" - starting to drift toward a Grateful Dead type jam, but still good.
After listening to more JW music I find myself scratching my head how uber talented his band is - Rodney Holmes is unbelieveable.  My current favorite, Steve Jordan, of the John Mayer Trio, may be replaced.  I was able to listen to a couple of his vocal songs and think lyrics are a challenge for him, but he seems to have a good voice.

Curby:  Partially at Vikki's urging, and partially because one of my singer's favorite vocalists was opening for him, I caught Jim's show at Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis in July, and was impressed by the band in general, but Rodney Holmes was "da bomb".    My musical background is pretty varied and I spent a lot of the late 70's and early 80's listening to all sorts of progressive jazz-fusion and have seen some monster drummers but I left this show shaking my head at how amazing his playing was...and to top it off, he's a little scrappy dude, might be 125 pounds and 5'5.....wow...just wow.  Some of the polyrhythmic beats he was doing just blew my mind.

Definitely a show to see if you enjoy Satriani, Vai, and those types of instrumental virtuosos.  He tours pretty regularly so get out there and see them!  I chatted with Jim briefly after the show and he was very approachable.  For you gearheads (Justin?) he has a signature model Fargen amp that just kills.

Re: Jim Weider's ProJECT PERCoLAToR

I will definitely try to see Jim Weider and his band.  Checked out Rodney's album and found a vid off it.  Nothing like good drumming.

Re: Jim Weider's ProJECT PERCoLAToR

Bumping this thread for Curby's sake... just a little example of why he shouldn't leave us. wink

Jim Weider deserves a bump anyway, for anybody who failed to check him out the first time around! tongue

Re: Jim Weider's ProJECT PERCoLAToR

It's a little early yet, but Carl's posting about Rodney Holmes in the Drummer's Corner thread makes this the right time to bring this up.  PRoJECT PERCoLAToR will be playing Reading PA next month, and I'm trying to round up people to do the show with me.  Here are all the show details:

JIM WEIDER'S PRoJECT PERCoLAToR
featuring Jim Weider-guitar, Rodney Holmes-drums, Mitch Stein-guitar, and Steve Lucas-bass
will be performing the CD "PULSE" and more
Gerald Veasley's Jazz Base
Crowne Plaza Reading Hotel (formerly Sheraton Reading Hotel)
1741 Papermill Road
Wyomissing, PA  19610
Tel: 610.376.3811
http://www.geraldveasleysjazzbase.com/
Date: Thursday, September 30, 2010
Doors: 6:00 PM
Showtime: 7:00 PM
Tickets: $12 at the door or in advance

This is where I saw them before, and it's a great little venue, nice and intimate.  My first post in this thread includes a link to Keith's recording of that show, and his comments even say something about it being an incredible place to see a show (it was his first time there).  He may end up going and recording this time too, but he won't commit, and I really don't want to end up going alone, so I'm hoping I can lure a "local" (or two or three) from here. wink

There are currently a few other gigs on Jim's schedule, if anybody wants to check it out:
http://www.jimweider.com/events.asp
Not all Jim's gigs are with PRoJECT PERCoLAToR (such as that 9/4 show in NJ), as he's involved in various projects and he's a touring member of the Levon Helm Band.  I really love the PP lineup though, and even though he's based here in the Northeast, I find it's kinda rare to catch a show.  So if you have a chance to catch this Reading show (or any of them), don't miss it!  By the way, they do tour overseas too, so keep your eyes open over there!  wink

I will leave you all with the official "Squirrels In Paris" video (same one Carl posted)...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fGNnQDu … embedded#!
That uploader has some other good-quality Weider videos there too.

Re: Jim Weider's ProJECT PERCoLAToR

*BUMP*     Please see my post above! ^

This show is coming up THIS THURSDAY, and I'm looking for people to meet up with there.  Any interest?  Trust me, this is an awesome band... I guarantee you'll get your $12 worth and more!  Come on out, it'll be a good time!  wink

By the way, I noticed a bunch of new shows have been added to Jim's schedule since my last post, but they're mostly all with the Levon Helm Band, and a couple odd events.  This is currently the only PRoJECT PERCoLAToR show on the schedule, and THAT'S the band to see... not that Jim doesn't shine in all his performances, but this particular line-up is not to be missed.  If anyone here is in the right area for this, I really hope you can make it.

If anyone wants to contact me directly, my email address is vikki515@comcast.net.

Did anyone check out this recording? ^  It's a soundboard/Schoeps matrix, and it sounds excellent.  There's been some talk on this forum lately of drummer Rodney Holmes... well here's a good chance to sample his skills, including some awesome solos (track #12, for example).  I was talking to Jim after the show and he referred to Rodney as a "shredder", lol.

If anybody wants to download this show and prefers bit torrent, here ya go... there are currently still 6 seeders...

It was an excellent show!  Go see these guys if you ever get the chance!  smile

While I was there I bought the latest CD, Pulse, and had all 4 of them sign it.  cool
