Topic: Good day...

I walked into my 11:00 music class this afternoon (Music 141: Music For Life) to hear Albert King playing over the sound system, apparently were covering the blues today. It's going to be a good day...I'll post back what we cover once class is over and I can get back to the dorms.

Edit: Pretty cool stuff, we covered some previous material with the slaves in New Orleans, talked about how they deal with funerals down there (slow mournful music on the way to the burial, upbeat happy stuff on the way back), moved onto the start of jazz with Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag, and briefly talked about Robert Johnson. There was a loooong list of artists who've been influenced by/covered Robert's material such as Zeppelin, Clapton, The Allman Brothers, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The White Stripes, The Black Keys, etc.

I found one of the slides online that I thought was pretty cool, it's a map of the where all the original bluesmen were originally from. I can't find it right now but I'll keep looking. I wanted to mention that my favorite guitarist was born on what's thought to be Robert Johnson's birthday, but it might have been a little much.

Wow Danny, that sounds just like a page out of the lesson plan from my music history course I took @ Butte College back in '74. Scott Joplin was studied in the class as well as Dixieland Jazz which was tied to sharecropper's blues moans. It was one of the classes I actually had no trouble attending and staying wide awake for.

Re: Good day...

Yeah we covered what they called "Field Hollers", which was interesting to hear an example of. The professor also brought up the Diddley Bow. He mentioned as an aside that that's where Bo Diddley got his stage name. It brought to memory the trailer for that new movie This Might Get Loud where Jack White creates a diddley bow out of a plank, some nails, a beer bottle, a wire, and a pickup. We also saw a clip of the now deceased Lonnie Pitchford...pretty cool stuff.

It's the same with me though, I've got no problem keeping the eyes open and the mind focused for this class. I actually lent the professor an Ali Akbar Khan album the other day that I need to get back...we covered him in class last week while discussing music from and around India.

Re: Good day...

Back in the day I believe Johnny Winter might've taken Tommy Shannon on a blues education tour starting with field hollahs, up the Mississippi to Chicago with a brief stop in Memphis.   He was better for it and you will be too.

A blues education tour...that'd be something else.

Re: Good day...

Danny my dear, I believe this is yet another part of the "show Eva why it´s totally neccessary to move to California" programme ... haha. wink
Blues classes at the uni - oh my. Even if I did study music here, I´d get to hear anything about Beethoven instead of Robert Johnson (which is not bad either, but ...).
Roll over Beethoven ...

What else did you talk about in these classes? I mean apart from the Blues?

Re: Good day...

Yes Eva, the blues portion of this class, and all of our lovely Bougavillea trees smile

It's pretty much a world music class, so we've talked about a ton of stuff. Different types of instruments (chordophone, membranophone, aerophone, idiophone...), uses of music in different cultures, and we've talked a lot just about music in other countries. Egypt, various countries in Africa, Spain, India, Afghanistan, more recently some of the Eastern European countries, South America, Australia, and now America with jazz and blues.

The class is cool though because starting on like the third week of classes there's been a mandatory concert every Wednesday. Attendance there is part of your grade. And this week's show is a guitar duo, so it should be a good time. smile

Re: Good day...

Now that's what they should teach in History.
What a waste of time my history education was.

All I remember is something about a palace at Knossuss (or wherever !!).

What possible use is that to me ??

Oooohhh. Just remembered. Actually, I did do History of Modern Music for a little aside lesson when I was in the Sixth Form. Was so unusual, the BBC did a news article about it on TV. I sat at the front of the class for that one but when the BBC came to film I was made to sit at the back because I refused to play the silly dumbed down media games they like to play. Bah. Stuff 'em. I've not changed !! lol
