Judging by how crappy some of the winners have been I'm sure you'll go to the finals or win or something. If you win give me $200 since I've been supporting you since the start smile

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

That you have Zampraz, you are good people man!  Get your **** to the States and compete dude you are a smokin' player!  I can understand if you don't want to though, Sweden was voted one of the happiest countries on the planet and the women over there are smokin'.  2 1/2 hours...getting the butterflies in my stomach!

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

I have to regretfully say that I lost tonight.  Without going into all of the details lets just say that I may have gotten robbed.  I am very disappointed because I played a flawless performance whilst the winner was not nearly as clean.  He was playing an upbeat track (same track that he played previously) and had his routine down.  I opted to play a different and more mellow track than my last one.  I guess the judges weren't on my side because the crowd gave me a huge applause and people were actually snapping photos of me (unlike any of the other contestants).  I was told that the winner was seen with his head down while I was playing mouthing, "Oh sh#t".  I am not going to showboat or dance but I guess that is what it takes to win a "blues guitar" competition.  What a jip.  I want to compete next year but I don't really agree with the judging at all.  What's the point of being a better player if the guys winning are sloppy showboaters?  If anything I didn't embarass myself, the people were very cool, and it was fun.  Just VERY disappointed but there's always next year... hmm

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

Hate to hear it.  Thats kind of why I've never been interested in being in one of these contests.  True the guys that win it could play circles around me but music shouldn't be a contest, just makes for bad vibes.  The best thing you could have done was offer to get up and jam with the dude.  Oh well Very sorry you didn't win but if it makes you feel better Joe B never entered some contest like this.

I did it 3 times in the past, passed the first night, second night busstttt.  All ended in the same exact story you tell.  I refused to do it this year for the reason of the judging system.

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

Yeah I remember you mentioning that you got shafted as well Ben.  It was painfully obvious in my opinion but whatever it's all good.  I'm undecided if these contests are really for me because when you know you are a better player and you "lose" to guys like I did tonight it really is a confidence downer.  Not dissing anyone's playing but it really makes you wonder what the heck is going on.  I thought it was a blues contest, not a "lets repeat the same song and dance everynight" contest.  It was funny because the guy picked the SAME song, did the SAME crowd involved hand clap thing prior to the contest, and played essentially the same (sloppy) licks.  I played a BB King/Robben Ford like track for the first go round and then a mellower sad A Minor track for tonight's.  I even played different guitars both nights (PRS first, Les Paul the next).  God I wish I would have had the judges I had the first night.  Maybe next year I'll showboat and play behind my back or over my head.  I mean isn't that what the BLUES is all about?  ROTF all the great dead bluesmen are rolling over in their graves.  Sorry for the ranting fellas! mad  Good luck to anyone who can get past these judges honestly!  (BTW I had a DRUMMER as one of my judges...that should say it all)

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

I had the exact same situation tonight StratPaulGuy.  I too did not advance under very similar circumstances.
This competition really is purely for fun, not the absolute search for the undiscovered king of the blues.

I have been doing this competition for 4 years, and I have learned aside from one's playing, the location of competition and quality of judges can greatly impact the results. I have seen people lose in the preliminaries that could play circles around some of the guys who made the grand finals.

Often the judges don't know anything about blues or guitar.  I did a competition one year where the judges were from local AC/DC and Stevie Nicks cover bands, or local guitar center customers who were asked to judge the day of the show.... hardly blues aficionados.

Blues is truly a rare art form, and often those who can play it would rather be out gigging, at home practicing, or in the competition for prizes than judging it.

After all, none of the greats became that way from Guitar Center competitions, and what happened to all the previous winners?  None are well known....

Its purely for the fun of good spirited competition, meeting new people, and most importantly, playing the blues.  I'm sure we'll both have the opportunity to jam with Joe somewhere down the line.

best of luck next year I guess.

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

Too bad man
but dont beat yourself up its the competition thats flawed, you played your best , thats all you could have done but for whatever reason they picked the other guy thats the way it goes. you said the crowd were behind you that would be enough for me!!

"Everybody's entitled to my opinion. wink

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

Man thats the first sad news I read in the morning (right after the 9/11 memory day).
I read your text and between the lines you "are" the winner. You are happy with your own performance
that means you can go out of the ring with your chin up. cool
Of course you can play next year with the guitar behind your head, upside down
playing with the tongue while you make some salto and flic-flac....
And don't forget the painful distorted face... lol
And even if you win then, would it make you feel better for this jump-around? probably not.

I see it that way, the judges want to see (as sad as it is) a kind of entertainment show.
Musical and visualwise. And as aforementionted, most of them have no idea about blues music
and doesn't know how to rate it properly. I know you are a smokin player and I wouldn't give
a damn on this contest.

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

Thanks bro and I'm sorry that you didn't make it either.  I hear you loud and clear about the judges man.  Only ONE of my 3 judges was actually a GUITARIST.  One judge was a hip hop/pop aritist/singer/producer/record company owner and the other was a local drummer.  I don't see how a guy who specializes in POP music and HIP HOP (bleghehgeh) could ever know anything about blues guitar playing.  I have a novel idea...how about some BLUES GUITARISTS for judges????  A drummer...good god I should have known I was doomed.  Maybe I should volunteer my judging services to the Guitar Center Drum Off competition, you know, me being an expert and all.  After reading my rants I know it sounds like I'm a sore loser.  I wish the guy who won the best of luck.  I learned a lot about myself and have become a better guitarist while preparing for the competitions.  It has inspired me to try and play in front of more people more often.  I have to do a lot of thinking before I decide to do this again though.  Until they recruit better judges I refuse to compete again.  I'm a regular there and will be sure to let them know about it.

On a side note, they had a used 100w Marshall Superlead there for sale and it sounded very cool!  I think it was the first time I got to crank one up.  I gotta have one!

BTW Thanks Ken for coming out to check everything out.  You're a cool dude and we'll have to get together and jam!  I'd love to hear your LP through your Carol Ann sometime!  Sorry you missed the all of the performances as I'd love to hear the opinion of a unbiased observer (my family and friends were very very surprised that I lost).  I'll shoot you a PM with my info!  See you at the Tampa Bonamassa show in November!

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

I've had bad experience with the local guitar centers.  The sales staff aren't knowledgeable and pushy, any gear there is already used in my opinion because anyone can walk in and wank on it.  The "high end" guitars they have are overpriced and usually not even anything really special.  I was in there recently and saw the setup and sign for the blues competition and Joe's name on the poster so that caught my attention.  Good luck to anyone who is still in it (if anyone?).

Actually a side note, I just discovered that theres only one other guitar store in Pittsburgh besides guitar center carrying Gibson and THATS depressing.  Luckily, the one thats still here is an expert on Les Pauls

Ya know its funny. Now I was sloppy on my performance and did not deserve to advance HOWEVER, the 16yr kids that won played Jimmy Page and Angus Young riffs over and over. There was one cat that was playing slide, doing some insaid bends, and some really sweet jazz fills who i thought was very soulfull yet different but did NOT advance. Not real clear what they look for but rather disappointing to be honest. Oh and the "kid" had the gain maxed on a DSL 50watter. Just a real thin tone. I can understand wishing a kid well and maybe giving him a break but I think we can all agree that NONE of us would be gigging or as well played as we seem to be if coming up everyone said "you're great" and let us slide. I think the embarrasment of failure is very important esp at a young age. Makes you (or at least it did for me) work harder and want to advance your skill. IDK,maybe that's just me.
