I had the exact same situation tonight StratPaulGuy. I too did not advance under very similar circumstances.
This competition really is purely for fun, not the absolute search for the undiscovered king of the blues.
I have been doing this competition for 4 years, and I have learned aside from one's playing, the location of competition and quality of judges can greatly impact the results. I have seen people lose in the preliminaries that could play circles around some of the guys who made the grand finals.
Often the judges don't know anything about blues or guitar. I did a competition one year where the judges were from local AC/DC and Stevie Nicks cover bands, or local guitar center customers who were asked to judge the day of the show.... hardly blues aficionados.
Blues is truly a rare art form, and often those who can play it would rather be out gigging, at home practicing, or in the competition for prizes than judging it.
After all, none of the greats became that way from Guitar Center competitions, and what happened to all the previous winners? None are well known....
Its purely for the fun of good spirited competition, meeting new people, and most importantly, playing the blues. I'm sure we'll both have the opportunity to jam with Joe somewhere down the line.
best of luck next year I guess.
