Topic: King of the Blues competition updates...

I started a thread a little while ago mentioning the Guitar Center "King of the Blues" competition.  Some of the players on here said that they were going to enter and I'm wondering if any of you have made it past the first round.  I was very fortunate enough to have had a decent night and I'm moving on!!!! big_smile  I thought it would be cool to have a thread dedicated to the Bonamaniacs on here that are competing.

Funny story from my first round...I brought only 3 pedals (a tuner, Fulldrive II, and a DD-3).  The amp that I planned on using was a Fender Hot Rod Deville because it's clean and has a nice effects loop.  I can get my tone on just about any amp that has a good clean tone with the Fulldrive II.  Well I hook everything up and I am getting no sound at all.  Not that I wasn't already nervous as hell, my stuff wasn't working!  I started sweating like a chubby girl at a Britney Spears concert.  I was going for a Robben Ford/BB King vibe with my backing track but all I had left to choose from was a JVM Marshall, Peavey 6505 (YUCK), and Vox AC30CC.  All of the effects loops were fried so bye bye delay.  I had to play with a very very dry sound which I was NOT prepared for!  With time running out to set up I said to hell with it, just plugged my FD2 into a randomly set up Marshall JVM's crunch channel and then went at it.  The tone was definately bothering me but surprisingly I made it through!  Lesson learned, this time my setup will be much simpler.  What a nightmare but at the same time one of the funnest times I've ever had!    The next round is this Thursday...wish me luck!!!  I'll keep everyone posted and I'd like to hear how others are fairing as well. smile

Well done
Glad you got through , frustrating playing something when you know it could sound 10 times better when I go to the local jam night there are 2 Marshall MG100 , but to there credit some of the guys can make them sound great its all in the fingers!!! right?  keep us posted .

We are with you man! smile
Good to hear you take the first hurdle. Its a shame if the gear didn't work.
Its breathtaking enough to play before a jury but if you then have to improvise
it can become a nightmare... So but good you made it through and it seems you made the best of it.
Its a good idea to keep the gear simple.
What do you think about the competitors? When does the competition go on?
Keep us updated.

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

Thanks Alex and Derek.  The  competators at this point in the game are pretty hit or miss really.  There are some very good players and some....not so "bluesy" we'll say! hmm  I'm going against 5 other guys Thursday night so my odds are statistically better to move on but these 5 players are obviously going to be of better quality.  It has been a blast so far.  It really makes you wonder with some of these guys out there though...for example on both nights that I went (one to scope out the competition the other to compete) there were guys who insisted on fingertapping.  Now I'm not one to really say how something should or should not be played but that really shocked me.  There were some sweepers and noodlers too.  Some guys are treating the tracks as playgrounds to go bonkers on and others are really trying to play straight up blues.  The next track that I'm selecting is a risky one IMO.  I have a lot of it kind of worked out and it has a very EJ-like vibe going on.  EJ is not a blues player but he's an influence that didn't really come out at my last round.  It should be a lot of fun regardless, but now more than every my competetive nature is kicking in and I want to do my very best.  I'm out to win this entire thing! cool

Hey Stratpaul guy,

Thanks for the update, I might try this next year when I can prepair for it. If you want to record your track with you parts maybe some people here would offer you some CONSTRUCTIVE critisum if you would like that kinda thing.

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

I judged the last couple of competitions at GC here and the 2nd and 3rd rounds this year. Not going to be able to do the finals got tickets to Seinfeld.

This is really one of the best years here localy. We had some of the old pros compete with some really young guys that have done a little blues homework. There was a kid playing sweeps shredder style but just bluesy enough to qualify in my book.

Unfortunatley he sat on a stool like he was plaing in his bedroom and missed the finals by a point or two.

I think it is great getting people that wouldn't ordinarily play to blues tracks having fun with it.
The winner here has to go to Texas where Oklahoman's are never treated fairly smile

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

That's cool Jim!  I guess I am lucky.  The District Finals are in Winter Park, FL relatively close to where I live.  I got the homefield advantage!  I did some more work on my next track today with my dad and I'm fairly confident that things will go pretty well.  I'm really hoping (and I guess expecting) to move to the next round.  I just need to concentrate on my own playing and not sweat the others.  2 days....can't wait!

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

Great luck to you. Unfortunately I had an off night and the amp wasn't loud enough sad

It was a great experience because I got to play in front of Chris Duarte and Jake Loggins (brother of Kenny Loggins and amazing guitar player). Oh well... there's next year.

Again great luck! I'd love to see you win!!

That sucks bro.  Funny you should mention the loudness.  At my store the guys were like, "TURN THAT THING UP!!!"  It was funny one contestant said that he couldn't stand the thing any louder and they were still asking him to crank it.  The dude who hosted it was really cool which is saying a lot for GC.  I'll keep everyone posted to see if I get canned tomorrow night!

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

I went to the one a couple of years ago in L.A.
Back when I was living in So Cal

Went to a bunch of the prelims also

For Starters.... Good Luck, I'm routing for you :-)

And from what I saw at all of the competitions,
you have a MUCH better chance sticking with the blues,
and/or appearing as original as possible

One audition was packed, the guy started playing
something over a backing track, switched to a Led
Zeppelin solo, then began to sweep....
He was very technically sound, the  most technically gifted,
but not the Blues
His peeps cheered like he they hit the lottery when he finished
but he was eliminated

When I was at the finals, I think everyone played twice
I really dug one guys playin alot, great tone phrasing
But his 2nd set was like the same as the first over a
different backing track

This was the year the guy from Houston with the acoustic won
Didn't blow anyone away, wasn't my favorite
But he was original, different, had his own schtick
And he was playin Blues

Here's his youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dz9yaX81ao

And again, best of luck man

Re: King of the Blues competition updates...

Thanks Rick!   That guy who won a year or two ago (from the link) would blow me away unfortunately but hey I'm just trying to have some fun.  I can't do that Chet-style pickin' or play slide all that well so... Really all I want is a couple of free guitars and an excuse to get out and play for some people! cool  Can't wait...I'll let everybody know how I do tonight! hmm
