Topic: (Blues Deluxe) Left Overs - Gear Used?

Hey Joe, hopefully you see this one. I would like to know what guitar, fx, amp, mic, recording gear etc that was used on this track. I particularly love the guitar sound on the intro it is FAT! Thanks a lot!

Hey, welcome to the forums.

You might want to check these videos

it will basically be that gear. Joe sometimes responds but I doubt he would give you an in depth description of his gear, it's in the videos on youtube.

Good luck
/Sam

Thanks for warm reception. I've already seen the videos and while you may be right, I'm thinking he uses different amps in conjunction w/ his main rig in STUDIO. I guess the only one who can really answer this is Joe himself or the people who were with him during the sessions. I already know I'm shooting for the star on this one but hey, you never know, Joe might be in a generous mood if/when he sees this. I'm hoping for an in depth description but whatever Joe can remember I'll take it! No harm in trying! big_smile

Budda SD80/Marshall Jubilee 2555 stereo into a Budda 4x12 with some delay in the Marshall loop (Boss DD-3 all dials at noon) and possibly a TC SCF chorus.  He also used a Carl Martin Hot Drive and Boost to boost the overall gain of single coil guitars at that time.  That's my educated guess at least.  On Blues Deluxe when he's playing dry I don't hear any reverb but during those times he used a Fender reverb tank pretty often as well.  Oh, and don't forget a slab board '65 Stratocaster!  That should get you very close at least, the rest is in the fingers as they say...

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Thanks SPG86. I've seen most of Joe's youtube video that showcases his rig so I already know the bulk of it. However my main question pertains to the intro to Left Overs. Although he has the same rig, that sound is totally different from the rest of the track. Even his live version does not sound the same compared to the CD. It sounds like a Les Paul to me but other than that I don't know. Is it a different miking technique? a Dumble and the Jubilee? a sprinkle of fairy dust? Help Joe help!

Re: (Blues Deluxe) Left Overs - Gear Used?

Sorry for the confusion...that track sounds like a Gibson to me (an ES-335 probably).  And, if you have seen his "Signature Sounds" DVD he explains that his amp setup of choice for Gibson guitars is the Budda Superdrive 30 and a Marshall Silver Jubilee 2555.  It doesn't sound like he has any overdrive pedals and it's likely just the amp distortion.  That album was cut before Joe got deep into the Dumble, Two-Rock, Carol Ann, Fuchs, Van Weelden trip.  His amps were primarily Fender, Marshall, and Budda at that time.  On the cheap a decent Les Paul/ES-335 or copy into a Budda SD30 (these can be had for $1000-$1400) and Ceriatone Jubilee clone (about $1000) with a little reverb pedal would get you very close.  Joe is a big fan of the Fender Princeton in the studio and for his practice rig at home.  I bet if you put a nice overdrive pedal in front of that with a little 'verb dialed in it would get scary close (that is if you can play like Joe, and who can).
